I always notice the greatest improvement in speed is when I reinstall XP, then about 9months later it slows down again. (no it's not spyware, filesystem frag etc..). This slowdown phenom. is well documented in windows cirlces.
"The Earth is the cradle of humanity, but mankind cannot stay in the cradle forever."
"Men are weak now, and yet they transform the Earth's surface. In millions of years their might will increase to the extent that they will change the surface of the Earth, its oceans, the atmosphere and themselves. They will control the climate and the solar system just as they control the Earth. They will travel beyond the limits of our planetary system; they will reach other Suns and use their fresh energy instead of the energy of their dying luminary."
"Man must at all costs overcome the Earth's gravity and have, in reserve, the space at least of the Solar System."
I'm seeing lots of parents thinking to themselves... "my kid watches tons of TV as it is... this way they can get exercise..." Mind you, they live in suburbia, but the thought of their kids getting any exercise using technology instead of *gasp* a basketball, frisbee, soccer ball....
My response... Send your kids outside, don't make them dependent on the TV.. even if you're claiming "waving around a game controller" is a valid substitute for running around outside.
-Low cube walls... hopefully nobody talks on their phone. -Snack room... ok so the 'Whole Foods' styled snack dispensers are cool, however, not sure of the value over your standard vending machine. -Game room? How about a gym? Do they have workout facilities or is the game room supposed to be similar to the "DDR in Schools" phenom we're starting to see? http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/ch ronicle/archive/2006/01/25/BUGA6GSFCG1.DTL
Google reminds me of MSFT, they have a cash cow (search, Windows and Office), but as an investor I'd have to ask both those companies "What have you done for me lately?" Plenty of released projects that just aren't generating any revenue....
Just you watch, one of these days Google finance will say "All this free food/massages etc... costs too much money... time to cut back.."
I guess 4Gb FibreChannel, 2.5, 10 and 20Gb/s Infiniband aren't quite fast enough?
I've managed storage for 15years and even within the largest datacenters very few host systems actually push their storage infrastructure. Most server admins say "I need linerate" b/c they have no idea how much data their applications will actually push. Plus it's a way to force the hba/hca/nic vendors to lower their prices.
Btw: 80% of servers out there could run just perfectly fine with a pair of 1Gb/s fibrechannel HBAs.
Yes... which is where we got the iMac, iPod and iTunes. I wonder if Apple can make the case that people already associate the "i*" with THEM, either the 'iPhones' TradeMark should be considered diluted, or it should be assigned to them.
I guess our Big Blue friends iBM are ready to sue.
I used to be a customer at a GlobalCrossing, which became Exodus facility. It was two stories high. However, the elevator was smaller than those in most office buildings, being that it *wasn't* a freight elevator. However, they did on the second story, have a rollup door installed in the wall.
We (being a service provider that provided storage to the other customers in the colo) had to spin up a EMC Symmetrix (these are 3x2 floor tiles in size) for a large customer. We then had to hire a forklift operator to lift the symm into the open rollup door on the 2nd floor.
In a different colo, we had a 1k sqft cage, and we had quite a few EMC symmetrixes (the 3x2 tile ones), when we moved in there were almost no other cages in this part of the building. When this symmetrix came off of lease, exodus had built up the other cages and there was no way for us to roll it down the hall without taking off the walls of every cage we passed. We then, instead of rolling out to the loading dock, we could only get it through the front lobby as that would require fewer cages to be taken apart. While the moving company rolled it out through the lobby they cracked half the tiles the symmetrix rolled over.
I watched a customer of mine that was running a pair of sun boxes (e450s) say "I don't want to manage my backup database server via telnet/ssh, I need to run X". He them promptly unplugged the keyboard/mouse from his primary database server and plug it into the backup. This *mysteriously* triggered his cellphone to ring, as his boss asked him why the website was down. For those that don't know, this would cause a solaris box to drop to bootprom.
Now we're going to put in a system that someone can send/receive email on their dash?
What ever happened to Keep your eyes on the road?
Has anybody seen the website http://www.platewire.com/? It allows your to report bad drivers by location and license plate. I can't wait to see "was sending IM and swerved into my lane...." as a reason for reporting someone.
OSX and Windows, working together at last - I expect to see Parallels fully integrated into Leopard by the time the OS is released, giving us the first OS in history (to my knowledge anyway) that will allow us to seamlessly run our Windows, Mac, and even Linux programs from the same desktop.
As a former longtime OS/2 user, I would always have preferred to run a native OS2 app than a windows app under os2. I realize parallels runs windows, however, by integrating in parallels developers could now decided to write ONE version of their software (windows) and be done with it. Sure in this case your running a full windows environment, however, I'd much rather run a OSX application than a windows or a linux (ala OpenOffice under X).
To quote the great Clark Griswald, what do you say when you get the Jelly of the Month Club?
Hey. If any of you are looking for any last-minute gift ideas for me, I have one. I'd like Frank Shirley, my boss, right here tonight. I want him brought from his happy holiday slumber over there on Melody Lane with all the other rich people and I want him brought right here, with a big ribbon on his head, and I want to look him straight in the eye and I want to tell him what a cheap, lying, no-good, rotten, four-flushing, low-life, snake-licking, dirt-eating, inbred, overstuffed, ignorant, blood-sucking, dog-kissing, brainless, dickless, hopeless, heartless, fat-ass, bug-eyed, stiff-legged, spotty-lipped, worm-headed sack of monkey shit he is. Hallelujah. Holy shit. Where's the Tylenol?
I wonder how much damage they could inflict on companies (consumers of Vista as well as MSFT) by making claims about having a zero day exploit? I bet using the right channels someone could get MSFT to spend quite a bit of resources auditing code.
Similar to how millions now have to take off our shoes in the airport b/c ONE guy tried to light his shoes on an airplane.
I have a logitech trackball.. it's unfortunately wireless. So every 2months I have to hunt down a pack of AA batteries from the office supply closet. Which during the holidays is impossible as everyone steals AA batteries to take home instead of buying them for their kids toys.
So, now I'll need another set for my keyboard, speakers etc...
So now we finally realize why we have to have 2,4,6,8 CPU cores in a home machine that is used to surf the web and send/receive email.
More Eye Candy.
I need spinning cursors, zooming window boxes, document previews in every icon, 3D graphics on document to be printed on a 2D paper. All you software vendors do is force me to buy new hardware or you won't support me.
I remember a cartoon that was published in the paper when Windows95 came out, it was a guy tossing his computer out of a window and the caption was "This is why they call it Windows.." I guess b/c you have to throw everything away just to get the latest *NEW SHINY*.
Nobody else does this.. I can still buy air/oil filters, mufflers, tires etc for my 1995 car. But g*d forbid I try to get support for 4 year old hardware. *PCI BUS? THAT"S SOOOOoooo 1990s...*
Somebody ought to call GreenPeace on the software manufacturers for forcing us to by new hardware which causes the old hardware to be sent to landfills. It's not Intel/AMD/IBMs fault, they don't say "Our hardware will only work in the OS that will be shipped in two years"...
What's with all the PS3 articles? Is this the only thing/. can come up with to report? Actually, they're all the same article "5 days left..." "4 days left..." "shortage article #1" "shortage article #2"

Does Vista suffer from this same problem?

Hi. My name is Bob, I'm a salesman with Cisco Systems. Give me a ring and I'll help you increase the capacity of your network.....
The price doubles once we hit "crisis levels"...
Normally I don't give any credit to marketing droids... but Apple's "Security" switcher ad is right on target:

The version for the DS will include a Ukulele.
When I read the summary I thought they'd be competing with Cisco's service provider grade box http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/ps5763/index.h tml
Guess they'll need to come up with some pretty fast interfaces b/c I dunno if Frys/CompUSA carries OC-192/768 interfaces for the PC.
Sounds like another LEAF project http://leaf.sourceforge.net/
Out here in N. Calif, I see droves of people everyday listening to their iPODs while driving or riding their bike...
God loves the marines, b/c we keep heaven.... FULL.
A country that can't keep from polluting their own land, how can we expect them to not pollute space..?

With a screen that big and the possibility of putting it in your pocket with your keys I sure hope it's 100% scratchproof.... Hopefully they learned from the Nano. http://apple.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=05/10/21/ 1922222
