    I also raised taxes as high as possible without having people get too mad.

    I used to raise taxes to like 99% one year, then down to 1% the next year. I thought people my people would be mad, but only for a year at a time. Didn't work so well.

    You don't have kids, do you? Kids put stuff in their mouths.

    This is slashdot, where most people are childless yet still feel privileged to weigh in on the issue, and where the predominant theory is that anytime any kid at any age does anything wrong, it's automatically a sign of horrible parenting.

    Of course the hilarious part is, whenever someone advocates doing something to prevent their kids from doing something wrong, they're immediately attacked as uptight, overprotective parents who are unwilling to let their children learn from their mistakes.

    There's a technical term for people who advocate two mutually exclusive viewpoints. They're called "idiots."

    What I find a little strange is how some people consider someone talking on a cell phone in a restaurant automatically rude, even if they're speaking at a normal volume. If someone's in a conversation at another table, is it really that bad if the other participant in the conversation isn't actually in the restaurant?

    One of the most incredibly irritating things about computer game evolution is how over the past 2 decades game dialogue has gotten dumbed down. It used to be that you had to actually look at what NPCs were saying, and think up things to say back. Now it's just inane point and click.

    EA used to be a great game publisher; they put out a lot of really great games (Ultima 5, Wasteland, Simcity, Seven Cities of Gold, etc.). Maybe they'll be great again.

    Slander of title?

    Probably would work. Usually you can't sue for slander of title over a lis pendens, but since there was no actual basis whatsoever for the lis pendens litigation immunity probably wouldn't apply. Might also be a basis for malicious prosecution and/or abuse of process.

    These people are about as qualified to write printer drivers as New York City firefighters are trained to handle the California Brush fires.

    If the brush is burning and the official fire departments aren't working on it, a New York City firefighter would be a damn good backup. I think the people here are overstating the whole kernel vs. userspace dichotomy; we're not talking about a plumber trying to rewire an electrical system. The skillsets aren't that far away from each other.

    T. Jefferson reckoned the consititution ought to be replace every thirty years or so. We're WAAAYY overdue.

    People always raise that point on these kinds of discussions here, and I always wonder if the advocates of that position understand what they're advocating. We don't live in Jefferson's decentralized world; any sort of armed revolution, successful or unsuccessful, against the government would be incredibly disruptive, would result in a lot of lost lives, would open us up to serious military threats from abroad, and would tank the economy for several years.

    Keep in mind that the system is still in its first year.

    The same people who will forgive Wii's lack of good games on that basis wouldn't do the same thing for the xbox or PS3. Honestly I was suspicious of the hype, but finally decided to break down and get one, figured 100,000 slashdotters couldn't be wrong about this (should have known better I guess). I was disappointed. The wiimote isn't nearly as accurate as it should be and the graphics were even poorer than I was led to believe.

    His pro hac vice admission was removed, not really much of a punishment, pro hac vice is sort of a one-shot allowance to practice law in a state. You can be a lawyer for just that case.

    Are you kidding, the past 10-20 years has seen growth in the south far out pace growth in the north both in terms of population and wealth.

    Growth rates may be higher, but actual wealth and population is still significantly higher in the north. There wasn't a huge flight of businesses down south; the south got a few more manufacturing plants, but not much else.

    No the way this will affect him is because when auto makers start making changes for higher emission standards in the NE they are not going to make a second set of cars for the south.. He will have to buy the same, more expensive, vehicle that you do..

    But the plants in the less regulated areas will produce more pollution, that's my point.

    The companies in question will either move to red states, thereby creating jobs for republicans and taking tax revenue from democrats, or will hike up their prices.

    Yeah, the red states have been relying on that philosophy for decades. Funny thing, though, hasn't really worked overall.

    Either way, the only ones who suffer are the politicians who were stupid enough to come up with the idea

    The funny thing is you're going to suffer, too. I wonder how much you're going to be complaining about limiting pollution when it reaches you.

    Those "dinks'" tax dollars are carrying you. Upstate receives a lot more in benefits than you pay out in taxes. And the laws regarding the makeup of the legislature insure that each upstater gets more of a voice in state politics than each city dweller.
