how about an 802.11b solution mixed with gps? send your current speed and location to other drivers. with enough of them the data would propagate through the network and even to the internet with strategicaly located access points. make the data available over the internet so your nifty navigation system can plot the fastest route based on distance and traffic. have it keep a log and you could predict the fastest route through a particular location in advance.

One of the reasons Apple's OS works so well is that it's integrated with its hardware

OS X would work just as well if Apple ported it to a particular hardware config with AMD/Intel chips running it. There is nothing magical about apple hardware other than it is good quality and there are very few different configs available. the reason it wont be ported is because apple makes money selling hardware. period. any reduction of ppc hardware sales would kill them (like, say, os x for x86). I have to agree, if you are willing to spend a few hundred bucks on the os just buy an entire mac system, they are comparably priced and come with the os.

Personaly I'm glad the iMac prices went up. At a local Apple reseller they had so much demand that they began to take preorders, so almost all of them were sold before they even made it in the door. Last I checked the list of people waiting (but not prepaid was about 50 ppl long). Price follows demand not just cost.
The 23" display is F*cking huge. Thats not just one inch bigger but 1.4 times the area of the old one. check this out. About one page down. Massive. 11x17 full page spreads anyone? besides the 22" cost about the same when it came out too.
As for the iPod: the price sucks. I think I saw the price on those drives go down and I know more people would buy them if they were cheaper. I think the demand for those dropped off after xmas also, weird. I dont think I could listen to 1000 songs between the times I'm away from my computer anyway :)
The bluetooth kicks butt, hope they figure out a good way to eliminate the "noise" problem between that and the 802.11b airports. maybe a frequency hopping system or auto channel selection?

    Ok, a few points:
-ADC is only there because it simplifies things for people who buy apple displays. Instead of three cables you have one. If you dont want apple displays buy a ADC-DVI adapter for 30 bucks and use a 3rd party display. Most (good) flat panels I've seen have both DVI and SVGA inputs. Buy 2 and hook one into the SVGA port on the card and the second into the DVI adapter and ADC port. Was that hard?
-If you realy want I belive Matrox makes a mac AGP card that has dual DVI out the back and you could replace the GF4MX with that.
-Apple displays require power from the machine. If you want to hook them up to DVI you need the Dr. Bott adapter. its about $150.
-If you want more monitors buy a pci mac radeon 7000. $125.
-VGA-DVI is expensive. This is because it is an analog to digital converter. its about $400. Except I can't think of a good reason to buy one if you have a new machine or one with pci slots.
-Yes, having "dual display" with out support for two apple brand displays is dumb. It is not a show stopper. You can work around it, and its cheaper if you use non-apple displays.
-Yes the cheaper way is "Ugly" thats why its cheaper. Duh.

Why not just add auto drive capabilities to cars and require them within certain areas? Just put some guidance systems in the cars, gps or even embed markers within the roads. Just hop in you car select your destination and hit the GO button. No great initial capital cost for the city, or construction time for laying tracks. Just have the governement subsidize the installation of these systems into new cars.

Next thing I want to know is why this isn't already done? With a GPS and a transmitter you could upload a flight plan made with something similar to driving directions from maps.com to a FAA data base, have it approved and fly away on auto pilot. Why dont comercial airlines do this? Couldn't this replace air traffic control people? Taking off and landing would be the hardest part (don't think you can do that with an auto pilot, yet). I know people will post tons of great funny jokes about how bad people drive on the ground but if all this is done via autopilot type controls I don't see a problem. Those of you with pilots liscenses enlighten me please.

I think something like this can become the new floppy, if it is cheap enough and not proprietary. I think the first time I saw this was when it was called the thumb drive. If I am not mistaken it is just some compact flash storage connected to a usb plug and encased in plastic. It is very small, durable and can be plugged into any modern computer. If several companies get together and write generic drivers for these kinds of devices and include them with new computers they would probably take over. Heck you could even write simple scripts that could store preferences, config files, desktop pics, bookmarks, login/pw info, pgp keys, etc. on these things. I think it would be great if I could walk up to a machine, plug this thing in, have it log me in, load my bookmarks into the web browser and set the desktop pic. Not to mention I could keep private or financial information on it that I do not want to transfer over the web. Despite being able to ftp or email small files very easily, a lot of people are not comfotable without something physical holding their data. I hope someone picks up on this and buries those stupid memory sticks. Enconomies of scale would probably enable this to become cheap enough to even store mp3s! -HB

To complete my uber-workstation I am currently eyeing the Details-worktools keyboard holders . They slide under your desk, rotate and auto adjust to a preset postion...for about 400 bucks.
