  1. Re:Bayes on MP Wants Official Email Address Kept Private · · Score: 3, Interesting

Having run a mail server with a few hundred users, I have learned that people hate being told to run anti-spam software. They expect you to remove every piece of junk mail for them before it gets to their computer. Even with SpamAssassin, and subscriptions to most major spam and dnr databases in my configuration, people still complain, but refuse to run mail filters of their own.... and now you are dealing with someone who has a big enough ego to have gotten elected to public office, and will expect more done for him.... all I can say is good luck with that.

  3. Linux for Gaming rigs on Activision Wants Consoles To Be Replaced By PCs · · Score: 1

I just wish there was something similar to Mythbuntu for gaming PCs.

I want to be able to install it on a home brew computer or net top, plug in my usb game pad, and navigate to a simplified package manager (that just shows the games section...there would also be an update manager and package manager with a full list of packages if you switch to desktop mode) where I can install some of the many awesome OSS games / Emulators / etc available and just play them.

There are a lot of USB Gaming devices (thank you Xbox 360) that can be plugged in and work right off the bat. For example, I have a USB guitar that works with Frets on Fire.... and a few cheapo $5 USB Game pads that work just fine...

If something like this existed, I bet it would be extremely popular, and we would see a lot of OSS home brew game consoles cropping up....and a lot more OSS Games cropping up simply because people would be able to rig up their own game consoles.

The more interesting part of TFS is the 11,500 McDonalds locations with Free Wifi, that way, while you are buying your overpriced coffee, you can get an Egg McMuffin and Hash brown for about the same price.

It's nice to know that I can (and for the last few years) go to just about any McDonalds or Denny's (or now, in upscale neighborhoods Starbucks) and access the Internet in a pinch, rather than paying a cellular carrier for the frustration of a 3G card.

I would imagine being an ER doctor is a lot like being an Emergency Repair technician. The best at getting the job done quick and moving on to the next, but not the best to explain what happened. I bet the reason most ER doctors don't want to talk to you is because they want to finish the job and get to the next patient. (I'm always hearing about the ERs around here being packed solid from people waiting 8-10 hours to get in)

On the other hand, the nurses probably have a little more time to talk a bit and tell you what might help. If you want to talk to a doctor, schedule a regular visit with your family doctor. Chances are though, that they will tell you the same things a nurse will.

  16. Paying for F/OSS on Canonical Explains Decision to License H.264 For Ubuntu · · Score: 1

Being someone who sells software I write for a living, I have no problem paying for software, licenses, or whatever it takes to make my computer work how I want it to. I think the big thing I like about FOSS isn't the price tag, but more of the peace of mind I get from using something that promotes software that is Free as in Speech, that the community has a say in, and can be used without worrying about whether I'm breaking a license or not.

I wish Canonical would license more things like h264 and such, and have a version of Ubuntu that users can choose to buy that has this licensed software included in the repos on the CD/DVD, or maybe an Add-On CD that has licensed proprietary software on it. They are doing so much to promote, and giving so much back to the community that they deserve to have some way to make their distro stand out, and even dare I say turn a little profit...especially if the profit is just a result of a more noble act.

To everyone saying that licensing h264 is a bad thing, I think you are the ones who make certain commercial developers so they don't want to release on Linux. They no that there are so many people in the Linux world opposed to paying for their software.

Isn't FOSS about CHOICE? If you should choose to use only GPL software, that's fine, but don't spit on people who buy some software because it does what they want.

Sell this all pre-configured as a complete solution that can work on your current Mac or PC out of the box, no additional software needed....or hardware upgrades to buy.

Then imagine Adobe releasing this and realizing that they can also sell white-box hardware with well-supported Nvidia or ATI Video cards, Plenty of memory + HD and high quality input devices... and their Suite pre-installed, and a lot of designers would snap them right up just to not have to deal with all of the installing and configuring.

This all being in addition to their current offerings, but ultimately being less of a hassle for the designer who doesn't care about what it's running on as long as it gets the job done well.
