    I took first semester CS without any previous programming experience.

    I knew immediately that I had a talent for it.

    Went on to finish my degree with straight As.

    Maybe it's good to weed out the untalented.

    Designers tend to like cute and clever. Sometimes this results in interfaces that are incomprehensible. Apple is the worst offender. It has nothing to do with age.

    They get bored, start daydreaming, and make mistakes.

    I'm willing to bet that while one product is cheaper at one store, another may be more expensive.....If I was a sales manager, I would be offering some incentive to my customers to do all their shopping at my store at once.

    Remember, your time is not free, gas or other transportation is not free, traffic sucks at xmastime.

    It seems silly to visit multiple stores to save a few dollars.

    Now...a few HUNDRED dollars...that's a different question.

    PS/2 connectors have another benefit...they always work.

    Sometimes, when there is a USB driver problem, USB drivers don't load correctly, no keyboard or mouse.

    I have rescued unresponsive systems several times with a PS/2 keyboard and mouse.

    From TFA...For the leechers, pretty obviously, the major motivation was financial. They wanted to acquire music or films without paying for it because it was cheaper than going out to buy it.

    Probably true for some..but not all.

    Other reasons to download

    No DRM

    Legal copy out of "print" or otherwise unavailable in your country

    Yes, definitely remove bot-infected machines from the internet.

    But, also provide a clear, readable description of the reasons for the cutoff.

    And, most importantly, a simple way to quickly reestablish service once the infection has been removed.

    And by the way, simple does NOT mean 45 minutes on hold waiting to talk to some dude in India

    Yes, I know it's more expensive, but I can afford it, and the electric car industry needs help to get established.

    Gas cars have had 100 years of development by some of the brightest people around.

    It's not surprising that they are refined to such a high degree.

    Yes, I know that the first generation electrics will not be as good as the gas versions.

    but... WE NEED TO STOP BURNING OIL!

    Don't text, shave, drink, eat, look at maps...etc while driving.

    It's up to the individual driver to drive safely.

    The government can't do anything to stop unsafe driving.

    Not only games...Autocad, ProEngineer, Photoshop, Cubase, Altium, AvrStudio, AlteraQuartus...etc..

    Unless you limit your computer use to web browsing, email and standard office stuff, it's still a Windows world.

    Yes I can. To me, many of Microsoft's UI choices seem right. Not all, but many.

    I am not a fanboy. I hate many of Microsoft's policies. In particular, restricting kernel mode driver development royally pissed me off.

    Apple is far more totalitarian and less tolerant of freedom. Given the choice, I would pick Microsoft any time.

    Of course, I still dream of a good software company that doesn't suck at all...

    I realize that it's fashionable to hate Microsoft...

    But, they do spend a lot of time and money on usability testing.

    Yes, it's not perfect, but it's not just a bunch of morons throwing crap on the screen either.

    I remember seeing the presentation they posted on the development of the ribbon. Seems like smart people doing reasonable things.

    The pre-digital world was a world of semi-secrets.

    There were lots of things that everybody close to you knew, but were effectively hidden to the rest of the world.

    For example, you get drunk and pass out at a party, all the other partygoers know the secret, but your boss does not.

    I wonder...

    If everybody knew everything about everybody else, would it matter?

    The boss might say, "yeah, everybody gets drunk and passes out at parties, there are plenty of photos of me in my college days out there..."

    It might just become part of the background noise.

    Now...armed robbery is another story entirely.

    This is problematic on computers used as digital audio workstations, where background processes can cause glitches in playback

    Computers are still pretty much the same, most of them still use the VonNeuman architecture

    Logical problem solving is still the same

    Learning modern languages should be easy..Question is, what do you want to use them for?

    If it's a purely academic exercise, to sharpen your mind, pick one of the functional languages, or lisp, or scheme

    If you want to do web stuff, Java, Javascript, Php,

    For embedded systems, C is still king, but C++ can be used as well as long as you keep it simple

    Most of the leading open source stuff is C or C++

    Lots of custom business stuff is using C#

    And python is just plain cool

    If you have a lot of free time, learn them all

    If you NEED Windows-only programs like Photoshop, MS Office, AutoCad etc...you MUST use Windows.

    If you can use open source programs instead, like Gimp, Open Office, etc...you can use Ubuntu.

    You need to know the building codes in the area.

    You may have lots of great, cheap but illegal ideas.

    Inspectors can be your friends, helping you do it right, or a real pain.
