  4. The overlay feature is borrowed from mobile. When you are on one screen you might want the main browser to be full size, but also have the video playing overlaid in the corner. It's not something I would use, but it's something that people seem to like on phones.

I hate it on my phone. Glad I don't use Chrome on the desktop.

  5. America has gone crazy. I saw a documentary about crime in America. It followed three guys. Michael, Franklin and some psycho named Trevor. Jacking cars, machine guns blazing, speeding all over the place. Started out robbing jewelry stores, running guns, and cooking drugs. Gang violence. Wiped out a biker gang. Highjacked stuff from a shipping port. Shot down a plane. Even stole aircraft from a military base. Hit some banks, and a gold reserve. These dudes were crazy mofos!

I'm almost exactly at 45N. It matters quite a bit to me. Switch to DST in the Spring and stay there.

  16. I'm for staying with Standard Time year round. The sun should be at its highest at noon, not 1:00. 12:00 noon should be sun on the meridian, more or less - it depends on how far east or west you are from the center of your timezone.

So, better to have it astronomically correct than to be more convenient for most people? That's dumb. Especially since as you move across the time zone, noon isn't going to be when the sun is directly overhead anyway. (Half an hour either side of center in theory. Not exactly in practice.)

Spring ahead, then stay there permanently.

  17. "Up to x speed" is intentionally deceptive.

No, it isn't - it clearly states that "X speed" is the maximum possible, it makes no claim about average or minimum speed.

Legend has it that P.T. Barnum had a sign in his "oddities museum" in NYC that promoted the "Egress" with numerous arrows directing museum-goers to see the "Egress", only to have the customer arrive at a door marked "Egress" that was actually the exit. Who's fault was it when the patrons walked out the exit - Barnum clearly indicated what it was, is it his fault his customers didn't know what an "Egress" was?

It's not his fault they don't know, but it seems pretty clear that he did know that many would not. So he was telling the truth, just like my two examples, but also being intentionally deceptive.

  18. "Up to x speed" is intentionally deceptive.

Kind of like mixing 100% beef and 100% earthworms in a 50:50 ratio and then advertising it as "Made with 100% beef". It's true, but deceptive.

  23. You don't own anything anymore on Game Industry Pushes Back Against Efforts To Restore Gameplay Servers (arstechnica.com) · · Score: 1

When I was a kid, I had a Viewmaster, and several picture discs.

Last week, I saw the modern equivalent on a shelf at Walmart. Runs on a smartphone. As far as I can tell, the picture discs don't have pictures on them. Just codes for downloading them. The fine print said "We reserve the right to terminate the app after 10/31/17." So while you can still buy it, but it might not even work now. Even if it is still up, you have no idea how long anything you buy will work.

It's terrible, but has become the norm.

  24. I want access to all content, at a reasonable price.

Sadly that is unlikely to ever happen. With everyone wanting to start their own streaming system, like Disney intends, and regional deals, it is going to be worse than cable.

While I don't like the idea of any one company being in control of everything, I don't want subscriptions to a half dozen (or more) services.

I'd be willing to bet that illegal downloading has been reduced by offerings like Netflix. I'd also bet as things become fractured, and the cost goes up due to the increased number of subscriptions required, that piracy will increase quite a bit.

  25. You shouldn't have to. The damned disc should be included.

Also it's absurd that you can get the OS on one disc, but making them yourself results in five or six discs. Also leaves a partition behind that may or may not be of any use, that the average Joe won't know how to get rid of anyway.

I had one crash when making the discs. Since it crashed before finishing, the existing discs were useless. After a reboot, it refused to make any more. What a piece of crap.
