I hit the site, but can't figure out what you can do with Minix. Is it a server OS, does it have a desktop? A web browser? Call me uninformed, but I can't tell what's up.
although I use Openbox fulltime now, I still use gnome-terminal for all of my CLI needs. It has all of the tweaking options that I use, plus it just looks the best (font-wise) out of all of the ones I've used. I do use rvxt when I'm on a low powered box though, but that's out of respect for the resources. so although I've been hacking in Linux since '95, I've used the same term for most of that time, and continue to this day.
as a Sys admin at a small software company in Austin, I'm enjoying running only Gentoo Linux as my desktop, with two other boxes (a build machine and cvs) running the same as servers. With the Exchange plugin now free for Evolution, I have no need for Windows anymore. What do I need day to day? A terminal for ssh, a webbrower (firefox) to view status of other groups (and post on/.), Evolution for mail/meetings/calendar, AbiWord for any.doc viewing/editing, rdesktop/vnc to control any Win activities, xchat for support, gaim for fun, and Eclipse for everything else.
We're at a point where you just need an Admin (me) that will install/configure/maintain Linux as either a server or Desktop enviroment. I'm playing with Slackware/Swaret (again) as a primary desktop, and with it auto updating to current weekly (daily if you need), that solution is the best overall for me, while still using my fav overall distro. I'm ready to move everyone over to Linux on the desktop. Sure, maybe the marketing folks *need* MS Office, maybe some of the VPs *want* to stay with it, so let them have Windows XP if they want em, while we save on any Lic costs from 90% of the company, we're way ahead of where we were.
After that, we just need to stop paying for the 'priviledge' of all the Exchange problems (locking for no reason, getting stung by worms/viruii) and go with a Linux backend there.
Call me an optimist, but I think we're ready for Linux on the desktop, and beyond.
When signing up for my DSL I made sure all servers were OK to run. Once I had that I setup my mailserver, learned how to admin it, learned how to run Spamassasin, gave accounts to friends/family and now I have about 10 users that hit it everyday.
So yeah, make sure it's OK with yr ISP before signing up, and then you're free to do what you'd like.
as machines get faster and with memory being cheaper, it just seems like it's a manifest destiny to use all of those resources. ppl judge an OS on how fast apps launch, how 'pretty' the icons are and such, and these things demand resources.
of course at work I'm running Gentoo with Openbox3 as a wm, apps like Xterm and Firefox are my mainly used ones, so on a 1.8Gig box it's very comfortable. If you want/need a full blown desktop, then you'll need a faster machine. it's sad but true.
oh, and excuse my rant, but on my 800mhz iBook I had bum stick of 512Megs (actually I think OS X is just a bit picky on RAM, but I digress) so I had to send it back for a replacement. I ran OS X for 2 weeks on 128Megs, and it was terrible! just doing things like turning up the volume would take 3 seconds to respond, and try to open more than on app and get ready to wait. really unuseable. of course, with Apple, you only have the choice of choking more RAM into it. and yeah, I did run Gentoo on it for 6 months, but OS X is just such a nice 'fit'.
> I like OS X over Linux and Windows is the Software Update
I run Linux at home/work (Gentoo and Slackware) as well as OS X on my laptop which I use at home/work too. I'm very impressed with OS X, as it allows me to do all I need, while admin'ing Sun/AIX/Linux boxen at the same time. Still, there's something about running Slackware with a simple cron job to run:
swaret --update; swaret --upgrade -a
to keep my box up to date with Patrick's 'current'. while there are pros/cons to either setup, I say go with what you think the right tool for the job is.
As for getting an MBA to move up the pay scale, I think I'll just stick to what I do best, and what I like, managing boxen. I'd hate to manage ppl, regardless of the pay. YMMV
I guess that's the key, but why doesn't some arise that's akin to CDDB? That way there'd be servers mirrored all over that would be able to share that data freely. Yes, it'd have to change and not just constantly be added to like CDDB, but you'd think someone could figure out how to do this reliably.
once you buy all of the equipment and get everything installed, it's way more than Tivo would be. still, I don't do Tivo cause I don't want to pay for the service, so a Linux box running as a PVR will be what I do, eventually.
any news on this front? are the Linux PVR apps more mature featurewise than the monthy pay options?
I *want* to build one, but time (and money) are my current obstacles.
with text messaging along with camera phones, we need to really revisit privacy, and what's allowed where. it used to be the 'video vigilantes', but now with everyone and their grandma being more wired and armed (with recording and communication devices) things are going to change for good as far as peoples privacy. will we be carrying around personal 'jammers' to scramble any pics that others are trying to snap of us as we walk around the mall? it could happen, and tin foil hat folks will appreciate the 'freedom' that the tech brings...
Is anyone running Tarpit? http://www.expressive.ltd.uk/Tarpit.shtml
In theory it should help slow the process, thus tying up spam servers and making them generate less revenue by not sending out as many spams. If everyone that ran their own mail server attach this to their MTA, it may help.
Outside of that, if it's in China I don't see many other ways we can stop this.
does this version not have as many security holes?

(1) edit /etc/swaret.conf so that VERSION=current
(2) issue the command: swaret --update; swaret --upgrade -a
and you'll basically have installed Slackware 10 RC1. Damn, I love Slack, and swaret just makes it easier to keep 'current'.
