So Dell isn't selling these, another company is? I remember when Dell "used" to sell Red Hat based boxen for the desktop, but they dropped that, pretty quietly, a time back.

Yes, so there's be a dameon on servers that could be a beacon to others, and only have it catalog certain directories that contained 'static' content that didn't change very often. then the main server would only be required to generate the dynamic content, whilest the static would be provided by others.

I'm thinking of almost a distcc way of handling this, where the server can dole out tasks to any/many other servers that it finds that are 'willing' to help out.

I"ve always wondered if something along the lines of cache complimented with a Bittorrent type of scheme couldn't help speed up the internet. that way bits would be mirrored all over, and a server could pull them in faster since more servers did less work each.

just something I'm thinking about today, well, that and the Kerry/Edwards pairing.

  7. more reasonable than not imo on iPod: Your Portable Corporate Hellraiser · · Score: 1

this first came to mind with laptops in my mind. think about how much corporate data is held on them, with the reasoning that whoever owns the laptop will take care of it, even though they aren't as security minded as an IT department would be. this is a great application for the OSX encrytion scheme. yes, you can do the same in Linux, but how many corp workers are using either OS?

iPods, usb drives, any of these are also suspect, but I'd worry more about laptops first.

oh, and as I type this I have a ssh-tunnel to my home network that allows me unfethered access to my boxes from home, all outside of any VPN. not the ideal setup, but our IT isn't working with allowing me to access our network with Linux (which is what we run at home), so this is the way for now. plus, I know how to keep it secure, so I'm not the typical example, but again, it should be considered for companies that NEED to keep things secure. DISCLAIMER: my company SHOULD be much better at this, but most of my complaints fall on deaf ears. oh well, at least I know I'm doing (more than) my part.

oh, and on a rant, b/c of a ram f-up, I had to run OSX with 128M ram for two weeks on my 800Mhz iBook. holy fuck talk about a slow system, I couldn't believe it. open firefox and adium, and then click and wait for iTunes to start. and I love seeing that rainbow beachball crap. anyway, point is OSX is a resource hog, as long as you know that going in, you're fine.
