I would go with the 12" iBook, 800Mhz and an airport card. Currently these can be had for just less than 1000$. They're fast enought for what they need them for, and would be the most durable.
Of course on mine I run Gentoo, but I think OS X would be fine for the students; at least until next year...
with all the confusion about which format is compat with another, this is what needs to happen. something that can go both ways, thus creating it's own standard. I wish they're weren't more than one (I'm shopping for a dvd burner myself, and I still haven't decieded) but until then, this seems like a great solution.
hopefully another *standard* won't be marketed anytime soon making this obsolete!
I've been using the 1.1 beta, and this is exactly what Linux needs to show it's "ready" for the corp desktop. Combine OO with Evolution, and what else do most (90% of corp users) need?
Exactly, I hate that ppl come down on every mention of Gentoo - most of the time it's totally relevant, and this is no exception. Gentoo is actually doing allot of cool stuff, thus it get's brought up. After that, cue the knee jerkers calling them 'Gentoo fanboys'. Lame, I'd much rather read another "I don't want to start a holy war here..." troll thread on MacSlash! (I really would!)
I completely agree, I've always wondered what the hell that icon was supposed to be, and now with your suggestion that's all I'll image from now on. The 'real' GNU looks to be the better and more consistant choice. MOD PARENT UP!
(don't get me started on the fact that there's no Gentoo topic icon...)
which is not an issue when you're running something like Gentoo or Debian. People bring up Gentoo because it's relevant, regardless of if you like it or not. Speaking of, have you even used Gentoo?
I don't want to start a holy war here, but what is the deal with you Mac fanatics? I have recently upgraded from a Mac 8600/300 w/64 Megs of RAM to a new G5 dual 2GHz with AGP 8X and PCI-X to help me at my freelance gig where I needed to copy a 17 Meg file from my home network to a desktop folder. On the G5 it took about 20 minutes. At home, on my Pentium Pro 200 running NT 4, which by all standards should be a lot slower than this Mac, the same operation would take about 2 minutes. If that.
In addition, during this file transfer, my iPod will not work. And everything else has ground to a halt. Even Safari is straining to keep up as I type this.
I won't bore you with the laundry list of other problems that I've encountered while working on various Macs, but suffice it to say there have been many, not the least of which is I've never seen a Mac that has run faster than its Wintel counterpart, despite the Macs' faster chip architecture. My 486/66 with 8MB of ram running MS Windows for Workgroups 3.11 is faster than this G5 dual 2GHz machine at times. From a productivity standpoint, I don't get how people can claim that the Macintosh is a superior machine.
Mac addicts, flame me if you'd like, but I'd rather hear some intelligent reasons why anyone would choose to use a Mac over other faster, cheaper, more stable systems.
I always turn off the version announcement on Apache, you know, when you hit a 404 page, it tells you the version number in the footer. I *assume* this will thwart Nmap's attempts at reading this, yes? I can't think of anywhere else Apache tells this. It's a simple edit of Apache.conf to turn it off.
My comments from an earlier post. I think the elevator is a great idea, and it's amazing that ACC thought of it back in the 60s. Of course, if you read his books you'll see allot of things that he theorized that would work back then, and are now in practice. If you want to start on a good one, read Childhood's End, or Rama (which will be a movie directed by David Fincher (seven, fight club, etc)).
Funny, I drove all the way from 183/Lamar downtown for jury duty on that Ice day this year! Had a good feeling it would be cancelled, but they had no one to call (plus, I reallly wanted to go out and drive!) I could not believe how sure footed it was on ice/snow/slush - I was really amazed. As for more normal everyday Austin driving, it's perfect. Me, my wife, two kids and two pups fit in perfectly for jaunts down to Barton Springs (stopping by Waterloo records for some cds - what are weekends for?) and it's not some annoying SUVs that I see on my drives to work on 360 everyday...
It's unfortunate it's coming to this, I wonder if they could have done something different in the beginning; not grown too fast or something. They started very strong, I even used Mdk for some time back in the early days, but grew tired of the constant "why aren't you a member?" attitude of Deno. Now it looks like they want to take over your screensaver, browser homepage, etc in the name of revenue. This feels much like Opera, which always struck me as some strange marriage of freedom and commercialism. Of course the irony is when I left Mdk for Slackware, I actually started buying Slack distro cds, not because I was shamed into it, but just because it felt 'right'.
I use Domains by Proxy so my info isn't displayed in a WHOIS; theirs is in it's place. They keep all my info private and serve as a 'proxy' between me and anyone needed to contact me. They'll email if they need me to do something in regards to my domains, it's so nice not having all of my personal details out there. I buy my domains from GoDaddy, and they've partnered with Domains by Proxy and offer it as an option when you're buying domains, that's how I found out about it, but everyone should check it out.

Can we get a Gentoo topic icon already?

Here's the one I'm using,/. has topic icons for RedHat/Mandrake/Debian/Corel(?)/etc - please add one for Gentoo. Thanks in advance.
They did this with the Cube, but it didn't catch fire like the original iMacs did so I doubt they'll be trying that again. I think their all in one solution for the iMac is sound - it provides a great entry into Apple, at a competitive cost - while providing that 'apple' feel with the design and control of the monitor.
Having said that, I would like to see another go at a 'cube type' solution.
Flash is avail for Linux, but not for Linux on PPC - I'm on my iBook, so I can't even see the benchmarks! There's a gplflash, but I haven't gotten it to work with Moz in Gentoo yet.

...I bought an Epson. I bought the Epson C82 as it was one of the highest rated at Linuxprinting in it's class, as it is fully supported in Linux.
Before I had some POS Lexmark that was free with an ISP account; moral - you get what you pay for.

Agreed, or run Swaret and have you system updated to 9.1. (or run Gentoo and always be up to date) Sorry, it had to be said!

I think it's only a matter of time before this occurs; there's just too much money at stake. As a consumer, I'm against it though.
