  1. ENTER the space elevator on Separate Cargo and Personnel Missions for NASA? · · Score: 5, Interesting
This makes sense, and I'd love to see something like the space elevator that Arthur C. Clarke's brought up in Fountains of Paradise happen. This way, cargo could be brought up, followed by crew if the cargo run was successful.

  2. Lower prices is the only way on RIAA Sales Compared to Download Statistics · · Score: 2, Insightful

I think lower prices (like what Univeral is trying) is the only thing that's going to bring ppl back. They're now used to listening to songs before they buy a CD - I know I always do now, and that in turn generates a more knowledgeable consumer. They're not going to buy crap, so it's up to the rekerd companies to release better music (not likely) or just lower the price enough to hook the ppl back in. Of course, the best music is still put out by indie bands, but most of the $ won't come from them, so lowering the prices on all the Britney's and such will help the bottom line.

Of course my AMD still runs all of my games (in Linux), for now at least.

Time to diversify so that the target infestation isn't as large. But you can't tell people what OS to run, so as for protecting the network, not allowing email attachments is pretty harsh to some people, but I think it's what will need to be done in the long run.

Email should be used for communication, not for transfering files.

Think about it, Ximian proves a nice (standardized?) desktop for end users, with usablity all laid out, and all apps within reach and installed. Now it's not my piece of pie, but for 'new' end users, it'll be great; and they'd get the same desktop regardless of if the CIO wanted to run Red Hat/SuSE/Mandrake or Gentoo. Of course admin'ing the that I need to admin these boxen what better way than emerging via SSH to all boxes? Setup a distcc and then you're really moving.

My point was that even though this just came out, it's already in Portage. That's the thing about Gentoo - you can run bleeding edge stuff, and optimize everything the way you want. Freedom time. Now relax, I'm not trying to go off on whatever OS you use, I'm just saying that it's nice to have the freedom to have whatever you want.

I'm not super l33t either, but I do have all my Gentoos all setup the way I want. It's a good feeling, if you have the time and desire to learn.

I don't think that's is the goal of the distro. As for CTO's not wanting to use it, I guess it all depends on your CTO's exp with the distro. I use Slack at work and they see what it can do, that's the value, not the name. As for you saying whilst Slackware may produce a decent distribution, does not do it justice. It's always been one of the most stable Linux's, as well as one of the most well thought out, configuration wise. So ignore the name, and try it out.

I really have to disagree with you. I run ~x86 on 3 boxes, and 1 x86 (stable) and haven't had any issue updating. emerge -uD world and all is new. I use etc-update to update my settings and all is good. Pehaps it's not perfect (sometimes ebuilds are broken) but it's the easiest distro to 'fix' if you ask me.
