  1. Re:Registration required Complimentry copy below on Economic Predictions Using Web Usage Data · · Score: 1

I don't think they could mine the net for data on past years. Atleast not the way they are doing it. Right now they have software that collects real time data. It sounds like it is checking what URLs people visit, and what they click on while they are there. As far as I know this sort of information is not stored anywhere for any length of time, and there would be no way to retrieve this data from years past.

Of course projects like the wayback machine could let you see what was at a particular URL in the past, but that is not the data they are using to make predictions.

The subscription option helps to keep the initial price down, which means many more people will be willing to try TIVO out. Two years ago I bought a TIVO a couple months before christmas, and I liked it so much, I bought one for my mom, sister and dad. There is no way I would have done this if the subscription was a one shot deal, becuase it would have added atleast $150 to each TIVO.

Tivo has never been a hardware company. The Tivo boxes are not made by TIVO, and TIVO makes no profit from their sale. In fact they are and always have been a software company (or a service company if you consider that most people pay them a monthly fee).

Yes but there certainly could be a SINGLE person who had the chance to look at/change the code before the final build. If you were the engineer or CEO or somebody who was in charge of the final build, and the change was only a few lines, it would be trivial to quickly make that change, and then run the build.

Now hopefully they take this sort of thing into account, but I don't like having to bet my government on it. The code should be open source, and the entire build and deploy process should be transparent.

The company I work for (NCAR - National Center for Atmospheric Research) uses Fuzzy Logic extensively. A common scenario is that we have data from a lot of different sensors, and we use fuzzy logic to combine them all together and make a decision (e.g. is it safe to fly?). Another example I've seen is using fuzzy logic to clean up noisy data. We use fuzzy logic to find boundaries, fit curves, etc.

Here are a bunch of examples of the use of fuzzy logic at NCAR.

According to a recent article (3-4 months ago) in Consumer Reports, deregulation overall has not been sucessful. I can't link to it because Consumer Reports is a pay only site, and I saw it in the print edition. The general idea in the article was that prices were falling before the deregulation, and that overall prices fell faster when industries were regulated than when they after they were deregulated. They compared I think about 5-6 industries, including phone, cable, airlines.
