since this post is 4 insightful, i'm going to assume that having sex with a virgin infant (as opposed to a slutty one) really is going to cure my AIDS.
Good luck with that. the cost of maintaining such a huge database will probably be higher than their freaking budget, at least after you take out all the bribes and shit.
mod parent up. something this extreme should never be done in a school. what's next, searching kids' homes? holding cells in the basement for punishment? you're not cops, you're supposed to educate those kids!
although, maybe they just wanted to see a naked 13 year old girl. it's hard to resist, if you think you have the opportunity... i've said too much.
are you kidding? what if somebody got a headache, and took the pill to feel better? can you imagine the damage to The Children's fragile minds from seeing someone take a pill not prescribed by a doctor?
i stand by my statement - he really thinks clicking a checkbox is easier than typing a 6-12 character string twice? personally, i find switching between the mouse and the keyboard much more "expensive", in terms of the flow of my actions.
I don't think a general argument like that is valid. One could just as well say that selling all the necessary equipment for manufacturing, for example, biological weapons isn't "bad", but only actually manufacturing and using them is. That being said, I do agree that in this case the technology in question was probably "generic" enough that whoever sold it could have had a reasonable expectation that it would be used for "legitimate" purposes (although the word is not entirely appropriate, since in Iran it is "legitimate" to execute homosexuals, etc. Perhaps I should say "moral", or "! violation of human rights").
awesome post, and ditto on the stuff about environmentalists. the way they shoot down anything that might replace 0.5% of the fossil fuels in use is just... well, fucked up. we've got the end of the world as we know it on one hand (assuming global warming is somewhat more real than manbearpig), and some localized negative effects on the other (like "it's ugly", or "it makes too much noise", or even "it kills birds" - all very localized problems, that won't affect polar bears or the Gulf Stream in a million years). and even while facing this kind of choice, some people still keep bitching about the minutia, completely missing the big picture.
I'm actually kind of sick of this argument. Yes, social development is important. Yes, it's hard enough for geeks to fit in without the age difference. Yes, looking down on people is generally a bad idea, including looking down on people who are dumber than you are. But is it any better to look down on someone because they're not good at sports? Because they can't be a cheerleader? Because they aren't as funny/charming/interesting in social settings? Because they can't get laid? Etc.
I agree that completely disregarding social development isn't a good idea, because it can lead to sad and, in some cases, tragically self-destructive lives due to social isolation. But as things stand today, I think people tend to pay a disproportionate amount of attention to social over academic development. Now, don't get me wrong, I'd probably have made the same decision as you mom did, because I wouldn't want my kids to be miserable. And, because of this, everyone is stuck in this Nash equilibrium, where not enough people make non-traditional choices for their kids. Until this changes, quarterbacks will epitomize happiness and success, and geeks will hide in their bedrooms/dorm rooms for fear of not being accepted by the "cool kids".

... the Great Old Ones will return, all life on earth will be destroyed.
Chances are very high that someone has the exact same problem as you, and has written about it.
I agree. In fact, one of my Laws of Life is that any question you ever ask, someone has asked before you.
Except if you're trying to fix networking in linux under vmware.
This would only be an appropriate analogy if RIAA/MPAA sued people who listened to music they recorded themselves without paying for it.
Oh wait...
