Yeah, I saw the story also on rte where I get most of my irish news anyway (cos they don't have nasty registration and such) but decided to post the link as they have to link to related earlier stories on the subject that might prove useful.

This was my favorite part of the story: "The Fine Gael Spokesman on the Environment, Bernard Allen, claimed Minister Cullen had tampered with the very essence of democracy and had wasted taxpayers' money.
Mr Cullen rejected the claims but said today had not been a great day for him. "

Just because it's the capital, Tallahassee might even get it before Jax..considering the whole monorail fiasco, and the fact that Disney's not terribly close, I don't think Jacksonville voters were what got this one passed.

I was going to moderate this story, but I hate it when folks living in south Florida think they are the whole state. There are some people left that live north of I-4 and the turnpike and see money taken out of their pocket for a project only benefiting those that live on or south of it. If you don't live south of Ocala, naturally I'll eat my own shorts, but big money didn't have to buy the signatures- there are plenty enough ignorant people living here to naively think a high-speed rail would benefit them despite their living in say, Tallahassee.

I will say, you are certainly correct in your second paragraph, I just don't think you can convince me that because it was introduced via petition that certain mouse-eared companies had nothing to do with sponsoring said petition.

Jacksonville has a monorail system that is not used becuase it currently only benefits one small portion of a very spread-out city, and the voters won't throw any more money at it to expand the service because of the perception that it won't benefit them- I guess I just don't want to see that happen in this case. Traveling in south florida is a pain, what with all the tolls and everything, anything to relieve that would be nice.

Anyway, almost any net use in our classes consists of the professor having a website, and linking various things to it, perhaps hooking his laptop up to a projector but usually saying, go to the website and check the links at home.

heh, great flamebait title- seriously, i usually gloss over katz articles, especially given the usual amount of anti-katz comments which dangle below. this time, beyond anything else katz said, or has ever said, one thing stuck out in my mind about this article, and i quote:

Mayor Guiliani of New York clearly rose to the tragedy. President Bush, sticking to his cautious sing-song monotone, fled to various bunkers and seemed to shrink throughout the day. Guiliani got bigger by the hour. Defying advice that he hide out until the shooting stopped, he rushed to the scene, was nearly killed, calmed the city down and took charge of the clean-up and rescue. Bush got on his best suit and stuck to the prompter. At least that was the image that TV brought of us of these two very different leaders.

my god, so katz says guiliani was near a place where there was "shooting"? he might as well have said guiliani=god, bush=dogpoo for all the maturity of that statement. A time when more consideration should be shown towards safety, especially of public officials, and patriotism than there has been need for in what, sixty years, is not the time or place for denigrating the president of the country. i'm a lifetime democrat for pete's sake, and even i recognize when the safety of the president is a wee bit more important than some cavorting around the rubble of a mass grave for the PR boost it gets from irrational touchy-feely types who will be the ones cowering should this turn out to be more than what already has happened. I'm going to spend the next few minutes trying not to be sick.

and that's it, i'm going back to bed.

what i want to add in (my two cents) is that i seem to remember something about later radio, 50s radio, in which elvis and a few other rockabilly artists could NOT get on the air because they sounded "too black". did people become more discerning listeners as radio tech improved or was it something else? given that i have heard much 20s and 30s radio type music, i would say it was something else. i'n not sure how to put that though. it's almost like once people got accustomed to the radio, the barriers of the "real world" entered into radio as well.

later on, the comment about popular music being shaped by the primary digesters, i defintely agree with that. it also reminded me instantly of frontline's little documentary thing "the merchants of cool", only thing missing is a mention of the feedback loop that marker research generates.

If I'm not mistaken, the general population did not start voting for anything more than the most local of government positions until much later.

At any rate, I would like to point out that as a college student, with a big ol' pipe with which to grab all the intellectual content I can, I have played with Napster and Knapster and good ol' warez sites and search engines etc. etc. and fully admit to having several hundred hours of music- but nowhere near as much music as I already owned-legally purchased mind you. I gave all of this mp3 hubbub alot of thought, realized that none of the music I purchased before I got to college sent neither the artists nor the labels any money anyway. Almost everything I own is vinyl , purchased second-hand or CDs purchased second hand or bought from a store-but nearly all of those were artists that are long dead. MP3s made me give contemporary music a second chance- but as the recording industry's practice of silly lawsuits sickens me, I laugh at the RIAA on behalf of the money they continue to miss from my pockets.
