I understand what you're describing, but how exactly is that not part of "the system"? I was vague on purpose --- I'm not going to write a tutorial on SMTP on Slashdot. I'd like to think the majority of readers here have a grasp of how it works.
I suppose to clarify a bit so you'll understand, I wasn't talking about the protocols involved or the TCP/IP stack. Open relays for example is a major contributor to email spam (one example). I chose email as it's the most visible part of our lives now; Facebook, Myspace, IM --- those are probably not used as much as pure email. But they exhibit the same issues.
I know you say you don't see a way of reconciling the problem, but it doesn't hurt for others to suggest or try.
Cheers.
I'm surprised no one mentioned this so far: Why treat a symptom, when it does nothing to the disease? As long as spam is a problem, and profitable, any deterrent will be overrun just like DRM. It's just a matter of time.
The entire system of how email works right now needs to be thrown away. It was great for ARPAnet, but it wasn't built to scale in this fashion. Go ahead --- someone reply with the "Your approach to spam won't work, blah blah blah" copypasta.
I don't know why people complain that they have to boot into Windows to play games. My iMac plays WoW just fine in the Mac OS environment.
Is there really other games besides WoW? Or is it just a myth?
No, he's not big headed. Questhelper is quite possibly the most downloaded add-on in the history of MMORPGs. I've donated, and it was ONLY because of the in-game messages. I didn't find them obtusive at all! There's one at the very beginning of login that states that it's donation-supported, and another message (deep in the addon) that says "Click here for donation info".
That's it. Clean, useful, and it didn't try to suck your wallet dry.
You know what really sucks? I'm going to find playing WoW a lot less interesting when this addon isn't updated. it saved me a lot of time, so I could spend it on what I found fun: PvP.
FUD, FUD, FUD. I don't normally respond to obvious troll posts like this, but I simply couldn't let this go....
-- There are no buttons (as you're accustomed to) whatsoever on the Macbook, Mac Air, or Mac Pro. The whole trackpad is clickable, and there are many gestures you can use that (some) find very useful, unique, and innovative. For the vast majority of the time, and I would place it above 99%, you don't require a right-click in Mac OS. Really, the right clicking thing is a carryover from Windows --- it'll pass. -- Buying a Mac doesn't make you retarded. Going out of your way to discount and post about something you have already made you mind up about not purchasing IS retarded. If you don't want it, don't buy it. But spreading mindless FUD is retarded and doesn't support your arguments because they're just invalid. -- Want 2-9 buttons on your mouse? Buy a frickin' seperate mouse. I'm using a Logitech 5 button with my iMac right now. -- I can understand your wish for a higher screen resolution. If that's a requirement, then buy a laptop with 1900x1200 or whatever you need. If it's not a Mac, that's ok!
You're making assumptions based on.... what exactly? Your personal experience? I have both a Wii and PS3 (had a 360 until it died), and I play them both at least 10-15 hours a week each.
Wii's don't fail less because people don't play them. I don't know why, or if, they fail less than the others.
That's obvious. I suppose the humor just didn't translate well for you with text. "Most" people would look at 64 as an odd way of rounding up from 60. Only the more IT/CompSci/geek-minded would look at 64 in a natural way....
I understand that the RIAA is a popular target here, but why was this article shown in bright red when I came here a moment ago? I've read Slashdot for years and I've never seen that...
1) Google does have a point, but I don't think it's the right way to pursue it. By creating a hostile environment toward gay couples in California, this limits their talent pool in a way the company believes should be illegal. It doesn't matter if it's 1 potential employee or 10,000 -- they believe it's a discrimination that potentially affects them. Their lobbying is what I disagree with; not the principle.
2) Many things were considered illegal, and were supported by the majority of the population, while still being morally wrong. Interracial marriage? Segregation (schools, bus seating, toilets and water fountains, etc)? How about women's suffrage? Just because the majority of the population at that moment says "no" doesn't mean that it's the morally right thing to do. I know, I know...."We the people" and the rest of the Constitution states that majority rules, but that doesn't give the majority OVERWRITING rights upon the minority. ALL men are created equal.
3) I completely agree with an above poster -- religious and civil marriage are seperate things. The state should not be able to force a religion to marry anyone that violates their views, but in return, religious institutions/groups/individuals should NOT be able to return the favor either. Gay civil unions, with ALL the legal protections afforded heterosexual couples, should be allowed. Let Catholics/Protestants/etc keep the term "marriage" if they choose. It is now considered a primarily religious ceremony, and a seperation of church and state is the solution we need for this issue.
Some Air Force bases/squadrons have a 9/80 schedule. Probably the most well known is at Keesler AFB, MS. There, most everyone except the students and instructors for enlisted training participate and it works well. Lots of people comment on how much they enjoy(ed) the schedule. Some senior enlisted and officers will work on Fridays "because they want to" i.e., I have too much to do / mismanage my time.
I think that schedule can be very useful for keeping morale high, giving people more time with their families, etc. One thing you have to watch for: The very last hour of the day. Will productivity go down in that last hour each day because people are tired? Will you actually waste man-hours by piling them up on 9 days?
Good luck.
14 hours for 8 weeks isn't anything insane by military standards. I'm currently on my 5th straight month without a day off in Iraq... 12.5 hour days (or longer depending). Plus I get the bonus of catching a mortar, if i'm (un)lucky! 7 months to go...

"I'm a virgin IT tech with a pallet of Viagra in the back"?
What's this "Goatse" thing you're referring to? Do you happen to have a picture of it, so I can understand?

For a moment, I was trying to figure out why a Sybian (www.youporn.com) needed Open Source....

I think you just described an iMac :)
I don't understand. Maybe if you tried a car analogy?

Heh. Only on Slashdot would someone round-up from 60 to 64 to "make it easy" :)
Ah-ha. That explains it. Thanks for the explanation!
I understand that the RIAA is a popular target here, but why was this article shown in bright red when I came here a moment ago? I've read Slashdot for years and I've never seen that...
I don't understand this "book" thing. I need a car analogy to follow the topic...
"Fire away people..." You are hereby charged under US Title Code 10.A.6, para 24 --- inciting violence against an honorable official...
Good news, everyone!

My god, people still use AOL? *offers comfort*
There, there. In time, you'll be able to put this behind you.
