    I have no idea what you're talking about, and if you can't be bothered to explain it to me, then your message is an epic fail. It doesn't persuade me to reject my previous view about "consoles just work" (whereas PCs require a lot of dicking-around with settings and hardware).

    If the U.S. government had any intelligence, it would encourage depopulation in order to be better prepared when the oil drought hits (~2020) and people start starving. It's easier to feed 100 million mouths than 400 million.

    I don't understand why a working husband and working wife would pay more? They could just file separately and therefore fall lower on the progressive tax scale, and pay the same as if they were not married.

    Example: ACORN's collecting of signatures for petitions..... which were later discovered to be filled with lots of non-existent persons. If the petition had been kept secret we'd have never known about those fake names, but thanks to public disclosure we caught the organization red-handed.

    Aside -

    ACORN will be eligible for U.S. government funding again on November 1st. Apparently you ca do illegal things like advise prostitutes how to setup illegal businesses, and lie on IRS tax returns, and not have any real consequences. :-(

    What do you mean what? Reloaded/Revolutions are two halves of a single story, just like Star Trek TNG's "Best of Both Worlds" is two halves of a single story. That is no great mystery to comprehend.

    My point was that rather than divide the Reloaded/Revolutions story in two parts, they should have left it as a single movie (and shortened it). It would have played better as a 3-hour single movie than as a 4-hour two-parter.

    There's nothing wrong with Matrix 2 and 3, except that they should have been merged as one single movie and shortened to three hours. Or kept separate and shortened to 90 minutes each. The story as told was too long.

    Bad analogy. Kia =/= Honda whereas a Compaq PC-compatible == Mac in terms of reliability. Here's a better analogy:

    So Honda announced a bunch of new Acura models.

    Cool. I was looking at buying a new Civic for $15k. Can I buy one of those new Acuras for that price? I don't see any listed here or on acura.com. (shrug). I guess I'll buy the Civic instead of the overpriced luxury model.

    But if you allow corporations the right to complain (free speech), then you also give them the right to make contributions which, according to the Supreme Court, is another form of speech. In order to stop the latter you have to completely revoke Microsoft, Comcast, or others free speech right. For corporations advertising and self-promotion will be a revocable *privilege* not a right.

    ALL of them. Free speech rights are for human beings (i.e. individuals). Giving rights to XYZ Group makes about as much sense as giving it to a rock or tree.

    Sorry bud but I don't understand your point. What's wrong with IBM recommending people switch to Linux? It was IBM who recommended Microsoft DOS originally..... now they are simply recommending a different product to run on the PC platform

    I'm all for giving people choices.

    Our polls are typically open until 8 p.m. California time, which adjusting for time differences == 11 p.m. Washington D.C. time. So the results wouldn't be known until early morning (~1 a.m.) the next day.

    Americans won't stand for it. They want to know NOW damnit, not tomorrow.

    Of course in the old days, elections used to last much longer. In the 1800 election the result was not known until almost four months later (the Congress chose Jefferson(D) over Adams(F)). I think if our ancestors could wait that long, then WE could wait a few days.

    Which means if the 17th was repealed, Senators would be elected by the State Governments, and the States could use the power of the Senate to kick-around the U.S. government when it tries to abuse its power...... similar to how the UK, France, Germany and other members use their power to kick-around the EU government and keep it restrained.

    Example:

    California, Washington, and a bunch of other states legalize marijuana for use by doctors. President Dickhead ignores the laws and arrests CA, WA, and other citizens. California and the other states direct their Senators to censure the president and block all of his legislation from passing. He backs down. The States need to have the power to keep the central government from overreaching.

    Yeah but MY state is run by the Democrats (and has been for almost 60 years). What excuse do they have for not developing open-source voting for Maryland? Oh that's right... same as the GOP... holding onto the monopoly.

    Have you looked around? Many state governments are on the verge of bankruptcy and don't have the funds necessary to spend on e-voting upgrades. IMHO they should just go back to paper ballots. The old 1990s-era scantron machines seemed to work quite well - rapid counting ability, plus having a physical record that could be counted by hand for later verification. Oh and cheap.

    Oh and before you say the Federal government should pay - (1) They don't have any money either; they just borrow it from China and I think we need to stop doing that. (2) Read amendment 10 - states control elections because we're a confederation just like the EU.

    Anyone with half a brain realized converting from dumb paper ballots to "smart" electronic machines that could manipulate the votes was a Bad Idea (tm). Unfortunately that disqualifies most of our state politicians.

    I was looking at buying an AMD X2 dual-processor 2.7 gigahertz IBMPC-compatible for $330 (with Win6.1 installed). Can I buy one of these new Macs for that price? I don't see any listed here or on apple.com

    I agree. AT&T and Verizon should be forbidden from donating money or sending lobbyists into Congress, but if the individual human beings want to do the former, then I have no problem with it. Corporations should not have a right to free speech, but people should.

    Go ahead AT&T employees. Send a letter.

    Tell the FCC to support net neutrality because you want to be able to get your music and movies from ANY website, not just att.com websites. No I do not recommend bcc:ing your boss on that email.

    Yes AAC+ == HE-AAC == AAC + SBR. Here is what 48 kbit/s AAC+SBR sounds like (WinAmp recommended). Is it CD quality? No. Is it equal to a 160 kbit/s OGG encoding? Apparently 1/3 of people think it is, and even I think it's pretty close.

I suspect the decision to divide them in half was a marketing decision (per usual) and ruined what could have been a good story. Damn greedy marketers. They are the same ones ruining music via the Loudness War.

    No, no, you got it wrong. The "everything white" decor only existed in sci-fi shows, not in real life. See Buck Rogers.

    1970s decor is the "fake woodgrain panel" look, as epitomized by the classic Atari game console. Even my old 70s television looks like it was made from fake wood. If you really wanted to make your iPod or Kindle have the 70s look, slap some paste-on woodgrain on the front.     One disadvantage is the power consumption. iPhone lasts about 8 hours and apparently these e-paper gadgets can last a week of daily reading. So maybe I was too quick to criticize.

    The same way the iPod killed the MPman, Rio, and other early-to-market MP3 players.

    Now the iPod is like Kleenex or Hoover - the generic name for all players. Maybe the new Nook will become similarly popular and kill-off Kindle? I actually had one of my coworkers tell me that iPod is the only "true" player and I should stop using "ipod knockoffs" like Insignia. My attempt to tell him that iPod was not the first player, and actually arrived 3 years after the first was met with skepticism ("Don't be stupid. Apple was first.")
