That's a good theory, but if that were the case, why are they (the telecoms) fighting like mad to hand over the whole broadband industry to AOLTW by fucking up DSL competition, and letting cable (dominated by RoadRunner) undercut DSL price-wise? You would think that if they wanted this killer app to keep going, they'd sell DSL at $10/mo like they do in Japan, Canada, and every other more civilized country in the world.

That's bullshit. You can't tell me that I'm going to be burning more coasters on my external firewire DVD burner - same exact fucking Pioneeer A03 model as is used as the internal model on the original flatpanel iMac. Unsupported doesn't have one thing to do with it. This is an artificial, non-technical barrier imposed by lawyers. Not engineers.

No. Final Cut Pro does not do DVD authoring.

Basically, yes, if Apple would "play nice" and bundle iDVD with an external drive, that would be great.

But since Apple needs a way to twist peoples' arms to sell new systems (because they are not doing enough on the technology side - CPU/bus speed - to encourage new hardware sales), such a bundle or offer will never be seen.

Frankly there is no technical reason why my current system (upgraded Beige G3) cannot be adequate for Authoring DVDs. It's perfectly adequate for everything else I do (other than gaming, and I don't do gaming). But Apple's strongarm tactics are pushing me to spend the obscene amounts of money for a new system, that is not commesurably faster considering the expense.

If Apple would JUST sell a dual 2 GHz system with DDR fsb, I'd bite on that in a second, even at their current pricing levels. But their systems today just plain aren't worth the money, and the authoring DVD functionality alone, isn't worth it either - particularly since the barriers are legal bullshit and greed, not technical.

  8. Re:Same news, different day . . . on Apple Uses DMCA to Halt DVD burning · · Score: 3, Informative

it's worse than that, because bundled into the price of the third-party DVD burner is the MPEG license fee. bundled into the price of third-party DVD authoring software is the MPEG license fee. So when you buy Apple's solution, you pay once (with iDVD). When you buy a third party solution, you pay twice.

Then Apple makes sure you can only take advantage of iDVD with a NEW entire system (not making the drives available for separate sale) and highballs their markup, so that they can undercut the price of "paying twice" - where their costs only consider paying once.

I've read many news articles - reviews, of the new iMacs, and the main thing they all said was that it was so easy to create DVD's and that they all reflected horror stories of friends trying to author DVD's on a PC, with great expense and no success. The reason why is this sweet deal Apple has with the MPEG licensing, and the convoluted way they've exploited it to maximize profit.

I really wonder why Apple's stock is so low. Because this plot is deviously brilliant.

I agree with the feminists that women should not be forced into the traditional submissive mold. But on the other hand, a lot more women than you'd think don't want it the other way either. And the feminist viewpoint that these women are all sick or the subject of abuse, or incorrect child-rearing is just as much bullshit as the propaganda the rightwingers spout that all women are inferior and need to be housewifes.
My point is, some do - some do not. Don't force either to be something they're not.

Domineering is okay - you'd be suprised at how many women out there actually WANT that. In fact, there's an awful lot of women out there who WANT it, but are extremely frustrated because they can't admit it to themselves that they want that - because society has told them that it's wrong, and their husbands cannot BE that way, because society tells them that it's wrong.

And for those couples where the female is the Dominant one - that's fine too - but again, these people are often marginalized because society tells them that that's wrong.

It's all a matter of biology, and social dominance. (no, I'm not saying that men are born dominant, and women are born submissive - I'm saying that many people are born one or the other, irregardless of sex. Male dominance and female submissiveness may be most common, but not necessarily as ubiquitous as the traditional Male-dominated society wants us to think).
Where it breaks down is in two places. Where society comes in and tells people not to be what they are (you're a woman, so you cannot be Dominant, no matter how you feel about it, you were probably raised wrong and need drugs and counselling, and especially Jesus - lol). And where the Dominant player in the relationship abuses his or her power. (these people simply need to be beaten with a clue-by-four).

A LOT of so-called "normal" people can learn a great deal from the BDSM community.

I just bought an external firewire DVD drive, plugged it in, works great - except - GUESS WHAT?

iDVD and Apple's DVD player don't recognize it, because even though it's the same EXACT model number drive as is found as a built-in in their new models - Apple *disabled* the use of third-party drives for use with this software. That's even WORSE than requiring a special peice of hardware. That's saying: in order to use our software, you must not only buy OUR hardware, but you must buy a whole new system - and not just an ordinary system, you must buy one of our top of the line systems with the built in DVD burner.

I think that's proven that Apple is out to viciously suck as much money out of it's customers as it can now.
I've just about had enough, because I'm pretty much tapped out. I think I can just afford to assemble my own AMD-based Linux box, and I think I'm going to be much happier than having to swipe my credit card for Apple for every frickin little thing I want to do with my computer.
