We've only been keeping records for 150 (?) years. Geologically that's nothing. That's even nothing related to the time since the last ice age ended, back when global warming was thought to be a good thing. (not sure who thought that though. :)

Science abhors a vacuum. It requires the generation of an explanation for everything and the answer "I don't know yet" is apparently not acceptable.

Not unlike "dark matter" and "dark energy" which I heard described as "I don't know #1" and "I don't know #2". Refreshingly honest.

People here seem to forget why hypothesis and theories exist and don't appreciate the value of differing opinions. Like children, perhaps?

IMHO, it would be great if all of the default apps were removed, but available in a special app-store category. Then I wouldn't have to have a folder called "Useless" that contains the default apps that can't be deleted (if you don't jailbreak your phone). Or, they could come pre-installed if they could just be deleted from the device.

Same issue seems to exist on Android, though. Pre-installed apps are just there taking up space and there's nothing you can do about it without rooting your device.

By definition, casual expressions are harmless.

IMHO, untrue. I can't find an authoritative definition of "casual expression". But I define it as a commonly used phrase with a well understood meaning that differs from the literal meaning of the words used in the phrase. Similar to an idiom. For example, the casual expression "dumb ass" is understood to be a lark expressing disagreement rather than commenting on your lack of posterior intellect and usually not intended to inflict harm.

What's casual to a group of whites might well be offensive to a group of blacks. And what's casual to a group of men can be (rightfully) highly offensive to a mixed gender group.

But hey, thanks for proving my point...

Is that what this is all about?

  17. Re:laws on Ask Slashdot: Preempting Sexual Harassment In the Workplace? · · Score: 1

Those "casual expressions" are not harmless and simply because they are casual or common in some circles doesn't mean they are in all circles.

I was at a presentation once where the vendor (presenter) said "...now lets look under the skirts and see what inside." The women in the audience were not amused. Another time, someone said of a new partner "Let's get into bed with these guys and make it work." Again, some women didn't appreciate it.

I guess if I was the person that was constantly under treat of rape from a surrounding group of people that were much larger and outnumbered me greatly, I might want to keep the phrasing professional as well.

It is a simple trade off. The cost to develop and then carry and charge the per unit cost for a beautiful out of the box (unwrapping) experience flies in the face of delivering a price leading technical product. While Apple seems proud to lead in the high price category and has the margin and market power to get the $10 per unit their packaging might cost, it is a difficult place to accept additional unit costs in a more normally competitive market.
