Has anybody with an ATi card been able to run any games under WineX?
I know the game I want to play (Dark Age of Camelot) crashes and burns with ATi's Radeon drivers on by Fedora box (that is, on the rare occassions when I manage to beat their driver into submission and compile for the latest kernel...).
Since everyone else seems to have picked apart the rest of your argument, I'll take this part:
"especially considering the kludge that seems to underly GNOME, separate libraries for GTK and GNOME applications with surprisingly few applications taking advantage of the GNOME-only libraries."
Actually, you are entirely right on this bit, and the Gnome developers have realized that having separate Gnome-only widgets was a bad idea and no one was using them.
So they responded by merging all the useful ones back into GTK. Libgnomeui is now deprecated, and will probably be removed in the next release.
I'm still waiting for a worm that installs Linux on the infected computer.
Propogation: Scan random IP addresses, use multiple Windows exploits, etc. This part has been done a thousand times before, no need to reinvent the wheel.
Behavior: 1. Upon infection, the worm will install Grub for Dos, and copy the contents of the network boot disk into c:\boot, but will not modify the boot.ini file. 2. The worm process will run in the background, and attempt to propogate itself. 3. At a predefined interval, the worm will pop up a window that says: "Your computer has been infected by the so-and-so worm. To install Linux and prevent this from ever happening again, click OK." (This worm should be socially responsible. We don't want to force Linux on the masses, just gently persuade them using Windows lack of security as a tool.) 4. Continue to propogate as long as the user clicks "Cancel". 5. When the user clicks "OK": 5a. ping a mirror list to find the fastest mirror 5b. write a kickstart to the boot directory to use that mirror. 5c. modify the boot.ini file to boot Grub. 5d. Reboot the machine, and it shall be cleansed!

Damn you, Slashdot Effect! Now the settlement really will be $0.35 per person...
While it may be too late for you, colleges often hire students for system administration jobs. The pay is peanuts, but you will gain real world experience and come out of college with more than a piece of paper.
Did you know that in Russia they still call the African dark skinned people "Negroes"?
... or something like that?
In Soviet Russia, negroes call YOU!!!
"The economy is doing VERY well."
Have you been watching Fox News again?
"Is it fair to call closed source a niche market?"
Well, let's look at the market for closed source operating systems.
"when I think niche I think small,"
Definitely not samll.
"not many players,"
Check.
"limited use, etc"
Check.
2 out of 3 criteria say closed source operating systems are a niche market.
There, I said it.
I find it clean, intuitive, and easy to work with.
Flame on!
You must be new here.

I'll try again next release...
I'm sure that Pioneer has considered the fact that UV light gradually destroys most plastics.
So what type of material will these UV laser disks be made of?
It was written by "them".
Actually it was written by Yellow Dog. Thus the name "Yellowdog Updater, Modified".
Yum was nowhere near apt in functionality but it is getting there.
I disagree. With this release, Yum has surpassed Apt in functionality (mirror lists for example).
Are we reading the same F'ing Article?
Says right here that it starts at $35.
Just to nit-pick:
Nader is not on the ballot in a lot of states this year, because he is not the Green Party's candidate.
"Any good suggestions...?"
1. Move out of your parents basement. Sure, the rent is cheap, but you will pay for it in free tech support.
2. Get a real job, then you can tell them you are too busy.

Decent Linux drivers?
At this point I would be overjoyed to just have working drivers for my Radeon.
I have yet to get any ATI dirvers to compile correctly on any version of Fedora.
If this rumor is true, it might just be enough to keep me from selling the Radeon annd buying a GeForce...
How does a new user stand a chance installing a spanking new Debian/GNOME/Evolution desktop?
Debian is great and all, for servers, and hard-core advanced users, but why in the HELL would a "new user" be using Debian?!?!
I would recommend new users that want Gnome 2.8 and Evolution 2.0 wait for Fedora Core 3 to be released, or if they are daring, try the test release.
Not only will it work, but it is now included with Evolution, GPLed, and free of charge.
"1. Mandrakelinux - KDE"
I forgot they were still around, thought they went bankrupt?
"4. SUSE - KDE"
Bought by Novell, KDE will likely be replaced by Ximian Gnome in the next release
"5. Debian - either"
I don't use Debian much myself, but Gnome has been the default desktop on every Debian installation I've ever seen.
6-10: These are major distros?
Where is Sun's Java Desktop system on their list?
If by "lost the desktop war" you mean "became the default desktop on every major distro", then yes.
Accidentally posted as AC.

Until Windows includes a Mozilla-based browser by default.
I worry about what will happen after that though...
Will Mozilla stagnate without any competing browsers?
Will MS start committing code to Mozilla?

Let's hope ATI follows suit.
It took 2 third party patches and a recompile to get it their driver to install on Fedora Core 2, and it still crashes WineX.

Yeah, IE is so much more superior, I can't imagine why anyone would use Mozilla/Firefox...
