  1. Re:A show of hands if you are surprised on DOJ Names Dozens of IT Vendors in Kickback Scheme · · Score: 5, Insightful

I see your point, but if you look at the two parties involved, buisness and goverment. Buisness (capitalism) is doing what "it is", makeing sure it obtains a surplus of funds and market, where as the goverment (democracy) fails to be ruled by the people and follow a few select people.

A democracy that is allowed direct contact with special interest groups and lobbyism will drift towards an oligarchy, unless both (goverment and buisness) have a strong morale and/or rules (law) that are upheld. An oligarchy can, of course, only happend if the people let it, but I will let that be up to you (plural) to judge if that will happen.

By early 2008, Microsoft's contracts with computer makers will require companies to only sell Vista-loaded machines. "The OEM version of XP Professional goes next January," said Frank Luburic, senior ThinkPad product manager for Lenovo. "At that point, they'll have no choice."

Despite Microsoft's relentless promotion of Vista, manufacturers are still seeing plenty of demand from customers for systems preloaded with XP, especially in the finicky SOHO market.

I have no idea what their contract is with Microsoft. But if they had some backbone, wouldn't now be the time to say, "if you don't allow us to continue to sell XP (which is our most selling option) we will drop Vista"?

Just a thought, the article only mentions XP Pro OEM, so not clear if other versions are affected. It should still be possible to buy XP in a store as long as they carry them, ne?

I do see your point, but what you are asking for would be the end of the internet as we know it (at least if the current trends is an indication of what is ahead).

Put very simple, to remove something online, you would have to remove every copy online and offline, otherwise it could be posted again (say hello to DRM).
It will also prevent citizens to expose 'wrong doings' by goverments (or companies) since they can presure ISP/service providers to stop the info from being accessable (take a look at what China is up to).
It might be possible to make laws to provide a way for this to take place, but you need all countries to agree for it to be effective. Besides, the current trackrecord doesn't look good with the DMCA.
