  1. Foreign policy on Elect Steve Jobs President of the United States · · Score: 4, Funny

Jobs probably is probably miles ahead of the other candidates when it comes to foreign policy, particularly the Iraq issue. The Jobs solution? Simple: Oust Saddam, set up a puppet government, rename the country "iRaq", and insist that cartographers color it "lickable raspberry" on all their maps. Not to mention replacing militant Islam with a hip, edgy new "switch" campaign.

The iRaqis would find themselves embraced by the developed world!

If this kind of situation turns you on (no pun intended), then I recommend Snow Crash. It contains a computer/psychovirus which manifests itself as a bitmap that bypasses critical thinking and renders whoever looks at it a babbling idiot. It seemed a bit far-fetched at the time, but these days we have goatse.

There's a lot more stuff in this book that makes it a worthwhile read. I have yet to see a techno-thriller approach it in accuracy and fun, so I'm skeptical when a new one comes along.

  10. Re:This is a common misunderstanding on Miyamoto vs. Everyone Else · · Score: 1

  11. Money talks. on Miyamoto vs. Everyone Else · · Score: 1

In order to find out what gamers want, it's important to look at what gamers are buying. And they are buying your Resident Evils and your GTAs. The market has changed from the 8-bit Nintendo days, and gamers want to see more blood, violence, sex, and realism. That's where the smart money is.

Miyamoto will likely go down in history as the Walt Disney of gaming, and he will likely continue to produce excellent titles. But they won't sell all that well in the fast-twitch X-tr33m PlayStation world.

  13. Here's why I'm more into consoles... on Console Games Sales Beat Out PC · · Score: 2, Insightful

The only platform worth developing for, if you write a computer game, is Microsoft Windows. The only API considered worth using is DirectX. I try to avoid running Windows if I can, and DirectX is a horrid, horrid API. Factor in irresponsible coding of drivers that lead to crashes, and irresponsible coding of the game itself (called the let's ship it now and release a patch syndrome), and you have a recipe for disaster. There are just too many variables to manage, too many things that can go wrong.

Oh, and last I checked, PC's don't have Rez.

Linux is, from a technical standpoint, a superior operating system.

From a social standpoint, it all depends. Linux supports fewer commercial applications than does Windows; this emerges from the current state of the industry that if you want to market your software, you will write it for Windows.

This has nothing to do with the technical merits of Linux, and everything to do with economics as seen through the eyes of the businessmen who run software companies. It's a chicken-and-egg problem, and very difficult to resolve: the only way to stimulate a Linux market for games is to write games for Linux, and yet no one will do so because there isn't enough of a market!
