> To replace xxxx you first have to do all the useful things it does at least as well as it did.
To fully replace it, maybe. But to start replacing it, not necessary. At least not with other technologies.
E.g. mobile phones, laptops, all have shortcomings compared to the previous technologies (voice quality, disconnections for early mobiles, processing power, etc.. for latops).
It's not because you're used to another paradigm that the Linux distribution one isn't appreciated by other people
Releasing every 6 months allows me to get new _system features_, not new apps. Most of the time I already got the apps I need thanks to appropriate sources. It's easy to add sources for the few things you might want to keep bleeding edge, e.g. browser, chat, office? The rest I am happy to have it stable.
But most of the time, I don't have a need to upgrade an application. And every 6 months I am usually happy to upgrade my system.
I find it much easier to _manage_ a system when you have sources. I can even do that remotely without fear. I like it when someone has verified the compatibility of having multiple apps on my system.
On other system, it's OK to have a small application self update itself as long as it doesn't mess with shared libraries. Think installing newer MS Office screws up your IE, or the other way around. Sometimes with no way to downgrade. I don't want that on my machine.
"How to maintain security on a network without root access ?"
Sudo or root password is in the end more or less the same. You get to perform things with administrative rights. E.g. default sudo access in e.g. Ubuntu gives you root access right away. (sudo -s)
But in their case, they lost root access. Meaning that they didn't have full control on the machine anymore. How to you fix security issues, patch holes or do basic maintenance ? etc... I guess they weren't able because. That's what I find scary for a one billion transaction a day system.

With something like Android, it takes little effort (e.g. a team of a few developers) to create support for a phone. See for example the time it takes to get android (basic support) on the FreeRunner.
Now as an end user, if I get the opportunity to flash out my phone easily to get access to an open platform, I'll do it very quickly. I did this with a PC, I don't see why I couldn't do it with a phone.
Split the carrier from the phone/os. Let the carrier be the ISP, and be done with that. The market is changing. If only 10% of that market becomes open, we're still talking about 10s of millions of devices.
Perhaps if people didnâ(TM)t actually build their sense of self-worth by buying crap, the economy wouldnâ(TM)t actually be in the toilet at this point.

It sounds like you're mostly finished with your book, so... Or maybe an online publisher ? Or put it for free on the net ? Maybe just a part of it and make a web site and publish the rest bit by bit.
I don't live in the states so I don't know. I don't know why a carrier would prevent a unlocked phone to work on it.

Seems like it should work with a stock G1, so why not with an ADP ?
Buy either a Nokia N900 or a Android Developer Phone. I have an ADP1 and I love it.
So if you play music while you conceiving a kid, and your son becomes a soldier (chemical and biological weapon), do you get into trouble ?

Actually, if you really didn't do something wrong, isn't it easier to defend yourself if your wireless was opened than if it wasn't ?
Based on that line of thought wouldn't you let your wireless open, even if that increases the risk of it being misused ?
i.e. risk of being in trouble vs easiness of getting out of it.
Exactly. And this false sense of security will play against you if someone uses your line inappropriately.
You: "Your honor I didn't do it"
Them: "yeah, right. Your line was secured, only you could have done it"
instead of
You: "Your honor I didn't do it. My line was open anyone could have done it."

Bolivia aims to achieve wealth redistribution in a socialist state. I don't think that Saudi Arabia is the best example.
May I recommend Bolivia to look over Norway instead ?
Both are monarchies, but the implementation is very different !

When was the last security audit performed in your company ? I find that even more scary...
It's funny because the number is different depending on the country.

You could use an extra service, such as Dropbox, and place your files there, for them to download them via the $service web interface.
Not completely user friendly though.
