But, to be the devils advocate here, a Dell rep is in fact at an Open Source show. Defending a product that isn't exactly even a cash cow for them and I don't exactly see Linux pre-installed on any HP's or Gateway's. They are making an effort to put it out there for those that want it. Given that they a) didn't have to offer it in the first place to remain a leader in the industry and b) didn't have to show up to give their support; I think that the fact that they did both of those things at least says something about their commitment to at Linux.

Actually the more I think about it the more I am beginning to believe that it might not be so difficult to at least get people to try it.

Google is everywhere; home pages, search bars, browsers, phones (more will come I'm sure) and has even become a synonym for the word "search". Google it and you'll see. :)

Alternatives to Windows do not exist for the average user because they are not common knowledge. If you say Linux to someone they are oblivious. If you explain it you loose them more. "So... it's like Windows then right?" And since they have it... why bother. Same thing with BSD or any other alternative. Google has the resources to put it out there. And if people are willing to try an OS because it is made by Google, then they have opened themselves up for alternatives. Thus becoming aware that they exist. And what's to say, they won't explore more if they feel that Google's Os isn't right for them?

We always say it's a preference. But the majority of average users don't have the luxury of preference. Windows is all they know.

It's a watch that actually looks like a child's watch making it less obvious and less intrusive to the child.

  21. I really hate defending Microsoft but... on Zune HD Unveiled, Set For Fall Release · · Score: 3, Insightful

I have a Zune120. Despite the given fact that it is proprietary as hell, it is a fairly stable device. The firmware is extremely intuitive and runs really smoothly. The audio quality is clear. And I really enjoy the social that is built around it. My only issue is with it being so damn proprietary that I have to either dual boot XP or have it inside my Ubuntu Studio on a VM to even use it. It is the only reason I still even use windows.

I think part of the reason why the Zune fails is that it's one of those devices that a lot of people don't give a chance to. Those of us that use them, really enjoy them. I also happen to think iPods are nice as well and I have really considered Archos devices (though I had enough trouble affording my 120); but the truth is I like my Zune too much. And for players with large storage capabilities the options are limited. If we could only get it working in Linux

I lived in Texas for fourteen years. I was eight years old when we moved there in mid-summer from Pennsylvania. Huge change in environment. My first experience with them within weeks was a swarm; one of those "under the sidewalk colonies" that you can't see unless you're really looking. I was in the yard and the next thing I knew I was covered in hundreds of them.

They've destroyed air conditioners, killed pets, gardening can be useless. Not to mention the near extinction of the horny toad as a result. People have been killed by excessive fire ant bites.

They are nasty. Unless they have lived around them I don't think people really grasp how big of a problem they are. But if this works, over a period of time it could bring relief to a lot of people. I'm glad to see it.

There are a lot of things I miss about Texas but fire ants sure as hell aren't one of them.

I allocated a single gig of ram to it to see how it would run at minimal specs and the only real speed issue I have is the boot time, it's really slow. Once it's up though it runs a lot smoother than vista did and is almost as fast as XP. Given the amount of ram it's running on I am fairly surprised.
