I know what you mean. My initial instinct when somebody is talking on the phone is to be quiet and courteous until the conversation is over. I realized just how ridiculous that is for people talking on cell phones in a public place.
I've had few truly annoying experiences with cellphones in public so I can't complain too much. Next time I feel even slightly annoyed by a cell phone conversation I will definitely exercise my rights to speak (at equal or greater volume than the person on the cell phone) and move around in public.
Most of the systems listed on that page don't have a disk or memory.
Actually, most of them have 128MB/20GB listed in the specs.
I'm not saying the quality would be any better but those prices are as cheap or cheaper than the one mentioned in the story. I just wanted to present an alternative for somebody who is totally opposed to shopping at Wal-Mart.
OK, skip walmart and go here, buy your system, and download/purchase your favorite distro and install. It seems there are some even better systems for less than the Wal-Mart price.
I adore the UK Robot Wars that are currently shown on TechTV. I have limited basic+cable modem here so I don't get scifi or any other cool channels (who has time to watch TV anyway?). TechTV is one of the few good channels I get.
I catch Anime Unleashed now again but my favorite shows are Robot Wars, Xplay, and Unscrewed. Wil Wheaton's appearance helped me get through a long night trying to finish a project. Wil, if you're reading this, your threat to give Martin Sargent a cock-punching for dissing your website was awesome. You had the fist all ready and everything.
(Another note to Wil: My real name is Wesley so while growing up you were my favorite television namesake. Well, the only other choice was that kid from Mr. Belvediere...)
Who buys windows? People buy computers, it comes with windows. Most people don't know any better.
I know you were joking (at least that's what the moderation indicates) but I just don't see people flocking to the stores to get the latest copy of windows. Adoption of XP has been pretty slow (even though it's the best windows yet). People sit there with spyware, worms, memory leaks, and complete shit on their computers and don't even care. It's amazing what the average computer user will put up with.
I'm always amazed by how creative and artistic good theater can be. When things work they really work and you're sucked right in.
I would imagine the music and the tone to be sort of like Les Miserables. Perhaps the horse scenes could be like a production of Equus I saw a few years ago. Basically, they were actors with wire cages on their heads that were shaped like horses and wire cages on their feet that looked like hooves... the description doesn't do the costumes justice... basically, it was the type of thing where you KNOW they're not horses and they really look nothing like horses but you just accept that they're horses and it feels right.
A lot depends on the actors, too. The first time I saw Rent was in New York. I was blown away. I wasn't even looking forward to seeing it because I had heard the CDs and thought it sounded silly. The energy and the talent on stage changed my mind very quickly.
I think if LOTR is done right it could be really good.
I would hope that we would all be compensated with lower energy costs and a cleaner environment. I'd gladly donate my "processed food" for that...

This article got me pretty excited about the future of waste/energy. I'd love to see those piles and piles of junk and biowaste turned into useful energy.
The conspiracy theorist within me fears that these types of technologies will not take off because oil companies have so much power.
That said, who in the world has the mentality that Windows is the only OS?
All those folks who ask "Oh, does it run on Windows?" when I mention Linux. I also had somebody describe the computer they were looking for to me and it went something like this: "Oh, you know, something simple that can run Windows and Word, nothing fancy... like a Mac. I really like Macs." I explained that Macs don't run Windows and I got a blank stare and some followup questions ("huh?" "why not?").
Do you think someone could get sued by releasing an open-source entertainment computer (game machine, PVR, internet terminal, media player, etc...) under the name linuXbox?
I see double trouble with that as there's a company in Michigan called "The Linux Box" which does Linux consulting services.
Seriously, though, that is dirt cheap. I already have PS2 and GC but I would pick one up just to hack it up for fun and profit.
First of all, do professional (?) counterfeiters even use scanners/software? I'm assuming no.
Second, if you REALLY wanted to scan a piece of currency you could still scan it in parts and then assemble the parts later through one of several methods...
What happened to spending time/money/energy on innovation instead of false security? (RIAA, I'm talking to you, too...)
Hey, I do Linux support, too. Can I get a free plug on slashdot?

I thought of those problems too but there are some pretty clever screenwriters out there (Joss Whedon, for instance) who might be able to adapt it. Also, there's nothing that says the movie(s) have to follow the book exactly (look at LOTR).
I believe there were three books initially, then three sequels, and then a few prequels. The prequels can probably be ignored or addressed in flashbacks, the original books could be condensed, and the movies could focus on the sequels which seem to be more suited for the screen.
Just some ideas...

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm always looking for new sci-fi to read.
I would like to see Isaac Asimov's Foundation series made into a movie (or would I... maybe it would ruin it?). Actually, a series of movies (possibly a TV miniseries like Dune).
I recommend that everybody read Nickel and Dimed by Barbara Ehrenreich. The author basically went undercover in several entry-level jobs (including Wal-Mart, house cleaning, and hotel housekeeping) to see if she could make ends meet.
Damn you! I was going to write a response that had the title "In other news..." and contained something like "X-type company sues over anti-X laws!"
This just isn't my day.

Wow. That's pretty much.... every company!
Thanks for that link.
And sometimes, a brilliant shining star emerges from the crowd and unites the world like never before...

This is pretty cool. Maybe I'll pick one up to make a media box out of for the livingroom.
Now, my real concern is, when will we see a pricedrop in the Gameboy Advance SP? Anybody heard any rumors about that?

Yes. So obscure that there are Linux commercials on TV, penguins all over the place, and groups all over the country dedicated to promoting Linux.
Oh wait... you said Lunix. Never heard of that...

I agree. Why don't we hear about things that are living for a change?! I heard there's a civilization on Mars...

Double Plus points for the Buffy musical reference. It's good to know I'm not the only one who gets those songs stuck in his head on a regular basis.

Because I'm over 25, thus everything today sucks compared to the past.
