Oh, we had MANY reasons for teasing this poor fellow. His smell, his lack of success with women, his X-files obsession, his ever-increasing mass (fueled by a diet of mashed potatoes and mac and cheese), his bathroom habits, his bad driving (he ran over our back porch!!!!).... well, I could go on. We called him "The Baron von Dorkenstein" or just The Baron. His complete lack of understanding of anything involving technology was just the icing on the cake. He was convinced that the oil companies were covering up a water-powered car...
Right! Only women should have their physical appearances scrutinized!
Long live misogyny!
(note: the above was sarcastic. I realize that text cannot always convey the mood of the post. I just don't want any angry responses for the wrong reasons...)
Their website seems to be down. I was thinking of going there to see if there was a feedback form or email so I can let them know that I plan to continue my boycott that I began a few years ago. (I think I bought my last riaa CD in 2000. It was either Shannon Curfman or Moby...)
Thanks! This was the only trailer I could get to work.
I have to say that this movie looks amazing. Reloaded must have been an anomoly because Revolutions looks even better than the first. I cannot describe it.
Ahh... so, the Matrix must be like the old NES. Too many sprites and it gets all whacky! (Maybe that's how neo was able to defeat them all, because the slowdown in the CPU gave the effect of slow motion...)
Right... I didn't mean the rate of doubling was increasing. I mean that the PS2 technology (being newer) is already smaller/faster than SNES technology, so it requires less time and effort to adapt it to a portable environment.
(This is, of course, pure speculation. PS2 stuff could be totally bulky compared to SNES stuff. I haven't taken either console--or a GBA--apart.)
Besides the technical pros and cons of Windows v Linux, what about the political considerations?
What kind of message are you sending your kids when they run Windows everyday? Microsoft is a convicted monopoly. Do you want your kids to think that it's OK to support companies with unethical practices?
Would you knowingly let your kids wear makeup that was tested on animals? Would you buy a gas-guzzling SUV for your oldest's first car?
Also, if your kid knows how to use Linux s/he'll have no problem figuring out windows. Also, your kids will have a much better grasp on computer technology.
Unless you have some expensive hardware that is windows only then there's almost no danger in giving up on Windows entirely. I've been using Linux for all my computing needs for years now and I've never found myself stuck.
Macromedia flash works great under Mozilla. OpenOffice reads those word docs that people send me. My printer works, my cd burner, my webcams.... etc.
Sell all your games and other software on eBay or at a garage sale. Use the money to buy books (possibly about Linux).
Install Linux and seek out the software you'll need. You can get any IM client you want, OpenOffice for homework, and start searching freshmeat or sourceforge for fun and educational games.
Keep in mind that RedHat and Mandrake distros come with lots of games and amusements already.
I did some investigation on educational games earlier this year and I found lots of neat titles.
Good luck!
ps - Are you familiar with Linux yourself? If not, find a guru; that'll make the transition a lot more smooth. Check here to see if there's a Linux Users Group in your area.
Do you have a local battery store? You don't have to buy the APC approved battery. Get a standard battery at a local store that matches the specs and your UPS should work. It'll probably cost like $20.00 US.
The directions on nVidia's site for installing the drivers are pretty good. There's also a program called Xconfigurator, which is a quick and easy way to configure your X server.
Since you seem to understand what X is I'd say you're way ahead of a lot of Winlubbers I have tried to help in the past...
You can make a backup copy of a CD on CDR (perfectly legal under fair use) and listen to that. When it wears out or gets lost/scratched/whatever, make another copy from the original which is kept safe somewhere.
If you buy certain CDRs you pay a bit of a fee to the RIAA, too (although, I doubt the artists benefit from this).
I've only had to repurchase two CDs (because I loaned them out foolishly) but I am still listening to some cassettes just because I don't want to spend the money on a CD.
I think some of the ideas presented above are REALLY good but like you said: only in a perfect world. I think the setup costs (both in time and money) for a media distribution system would be too great for the RIAA. (Of course, how many millions are they paying lawyers right now?!) This also means that the RIAA has to CHANGE THEIR BUSINESS MODEL slightly. Imagine that...
I'd like to see some smaller, independent labels go this route (like Righteous Babe Records). Perhaps the rest of the industry would catch on (or catch up... hehe).

Back in my undergrad days I lived in a house with 5 to 6 other people. We had a shared dial-up with all our computers hooked up.
.zip files from the internet.
One non-techie roommate would always ask "Is your netscape working?" when the connection was down.
He also asked if you need a Zip drive to download

You must see this trailer for yourself.
Thank you.

Really, though, how many career (or hobby) related accomplishments (besides huge sums of money) attract the attention of the opposite sex?
Examples:
I just saved the company millions of dollars by exploiting tax loopholes!
I have formulated a variable speed of light theory that will knock the physics world on its ear!
I baked 30 dozen donuts today!
(ps - I know you were joking.)

It would be nice if they released an external drive or (dare I say) a device that can copy existing PS/PS2 games to the supported mini-disc format.
Maybe they can have Kiosks setup where people can pay $1.00 (probably more like $5.00...) to copy their current games.
...but, if Moore's law still applies then it is possible to do in 4 years what once took 10 years...
Holy crap. It's a cyborg "Weird Al" Yankovic!
Hell, if Fat Chuck gets promotion on slashdot so should we!
Jam Recordings
Enjoy!
Word! That new Charlies Angels movie looks awesome. I mean, it looks like more of the first, but that's OK with me. The first movie was 100% fun.
I always figured that the machines either kept the skulls as prizes or decapitated the humans to make sure they were dead.
*shrug*
That's what Microsoft is afraid of.
You mean competition?
Merry Christmas from The Simpsons...
Hoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooonk!

It could be worse. They could be using this song.
You left out the most important part: the previews!
I heard rumors of Star Trek and Lord of the Rings previews. Were these rumors true? Anybody else who has seen it please let me know.
Thanks.

Shit... and people say Unix is cryptic!
What about Gimli?
