Why is this comment modded insightful? This is a throw away comment. Of course it matters. Billions of man-hours will be spent in front of this software. We, as geeks, should have an opinion about it, comment about, and buy it or not buy it based on our perceptions. "they would immediately jump into the car business"
I don't think Big Oil is sitting on any particular patents necessarily, but this is a ridiculous statement. You don't just switch business overnight. It would take decades to acquire knowledgeable employees, set up expensive factories, create supply chain and retail relationships, establish a credible brand name, etc. etc. - not to mention the years it would take, if it were even possible, to convince your shareholders to launch into an entirely new field the company knows nothing about all for the sake of the potential of possibly dominating a market for 20 years.
In general, it is foolish to vilify groups of people, but, if you don't think the oil barons can't be exceedingly ruthless, than I would suggest that's a bit naive.
This is way over the line and a dangerous precedent. The employees at this company must refuse and they must take this to court. If they acquiesce, it will establish a precedent and other companies will see that people are willing to allow corporations to do this shit and it will spread. Once it's common in corporate security environments, the government will start requiring it. This is bad news. The company doesn't own my body. They can stick the tag up their ass.
Maybe he's tired of being the bitch and wants Microsoft to be the bitch for awhile. I understand that the RIAA sucks - and believe me, they're the ones pushing DRM not Apple - but there is a lot at stake here and it's not just about iPods. It's about who gets to control content distribution for the next decade. I'll take Apple's DRM over MS' DRM anyday.
Ahhh, but the Catch-22 is that the new service won't be compatible with the iPod, so it's selling to ~20% of the market. Plus, they used Justin Timberlake to roll it out. Yikes.
"Those people are idiots, too, right, Gravis Zero?"
It's a good point that lots of "innocent" people get AIDS as well, but that's not the point. The parent is a bigot and an idiot. It's not acceptable to write off AIDS victims because AIDS spreads more easily through homosexual sex or intravenous drug use. There is nothing immoral or idiotic about being gay and the people doing intravenous drugs need help not scorn.
Because the record companies are greedy fucks who don't get it and you're not going to have any sort of comprehensive catalog without a minimum of DRM at this point in history.
This a particularly relevant quote from a comment a friend of mine made on my blog - also in response to someone who said you shouldn't criticize without offering a solution:
if someone farts in the elevator, i will say "PEW!" it is not for me to suggest a change of diet, or pelvic floor exercises, or beano. let windyboy figure it out; meantime, he can take the stairs.
few things are perfect. criticism is simply feedback which should inspire the next step toward the elegant solution. criticism is the spur of refinement.
Dead cats are not renewable at the necessary rate. They should put their money into live cat engine research involving a piece of buttered toast strapped to the back of a cat.
Since cats always land on their feet, and buttered toast always lands butter side down, suspennding the cat in mid-air would, in theory, result in a perpetual energy source.

Your implicit assumption here is that MS makes more off of Windows than Office. Lookinhg at the respective selling prices, I can't see how that's true. More long term control of the computing environment, yes, profits, hmmm.
I agree with the general idea of the thread that Disney has become lame, but I agree that Treasure Planet was pretty good. I also enjoyed Emperor's New Groove, Lilo and Stitch, and Atlantis.
These aren't Pixar-quality movies, but they don't suck just because they didn't do well at the box office.

"Perhaps the most telling sign is the slump in SUV sales (Ford cuts jobs)... are people finally getting the point? I hope so!"
Don't kid yourself. The SUV sales slump is directly tied to rising gas prices. Your average American doesn't give a shit about the environment.

They license 5 computers now.

Next question?
Pay back's a bitch, ain't it?

Can't believe no one has mentioned the obvious conspiracy theory:

I completely agree.
If my Mac gets infected, I will wipe the HD and reinstall the OS and data from backup - 2-3 hours of work.
Compare that to constantly running the shit Symantec puts out with all the associated headaches?
No Thanks.
now it's the Frequency of the Beast?

I love the way they placed the UT Dallas logo right along the track of the camera and made sure to track slowly back over it again.
a deal with Apple at the castle AAahaahhaaaaaa...
It's invitation only :(
Yeah, that's why Apple is going out of their way to incorporate it into iTunes. You really nailed it. You should be a tech pundit.
