I am glad that I do home computer consulting for a living. There are so many idiots out there who just install whatever...

I bet you don't get too many call backs with your arrogant attitude. People can tell when you hold them in low regard, and they usually return the favor.

Most of these people you're helping are not idiots, just beginners. Unscrupulous companies are taking advantage of them. Your bad ethics aren't making things any better.

When I gave my wife her first computer she was on a web site and called me to ask for help. A banner ad designed to look like a Windows alert message was telling her that her Internet connection was "too slow, do you want to upgrade?" I told her that was an ad and to ignore it. She then asked how she was supposed to know that and I couldn't give her a simple answer. She was right, it was a trick. In the end, I told her that some things just come with experience.

The general public is going to slowly wake up to punitive and immoral EULA over the next few years. In the meantime, you might try behaving like a professional. The world has enough self-important experts. Wanna be a good American? Try helping someone for a change.

Since this thread pertains to copy protection, and I haven't seen this anywhere else, I thought I'd post.

In a recent /. story it was pointed out the Celine Dion's new CD will not play on PCs and Mac, and would likely crash your system if you tried.

Sony claimed that the CD would ship with warning labels on the front and back of the CD, and the cd itself.

I have seen the CD for sale at Border's and Target, and at both sites, no such sticker warnings were present. Since this is the first CD with this new copy protection, I think it's important to follow up.

Has anybody seen this CD, and does it feature the stickers?

I don't care for the Celine Dion, but this CD is an important test for Sony. Depending on what happens, we can expect to see more like it. We should be paying attention.

How many people feel Mandrake is an upgrade? I'm interested in desktop use for the most part. I want maximum compatability, and Mardrake has a Red Hat legacy.

I also am aware that Mandrake is regarded by many as a "newbie" distro, and I am interested in progressing in my knowledge. What is a good "power distro" that features the advantages of Red Hat or Mandrake's distros?

As I state elsewhere in this thread, I was mistaken about the EPA's role in this, that it was ultimately The City of New York that choose not to use asbestos above fl. 64.

Is it relevant? Well, it might have kept the towers standing a bit longer. Some more people might have escaped during that time. Of course, we'll never know 100%. But it makes sense to me.

Vilifying the EPA is pointless; asbestos is a separate issue.

No vilifying. In fact, I was originally mistaken in that it was not EPA that banned the asbestos, it was the city of New York. But the asbestos would have likely slowed the failure of the structure, and perhaps more lives could have been saved. The original plans for a catastophic fire would have given an estimated four hours to failure.

I was asked to provide a source elsewhere in this thread substatiating my first post. Try this link. It explains that fireproofing was not applied abouve the 64th floor.

  25. Asbestos on Leaked FEMA/ASCE Draft Report On WTC Collapse · · Score: 4, Informative

One of the contributing factors is the lack of Asbestos fireproofing above the 70th floors. New EPA laws were enacted during the construction of WTC that prohibited the spray-on fireproofing that was applied to the I-beams. With the fireproofing, the I-beams could withstand an esimated 2000 degree fire, and without they would lose temper and bend at approx. 1200 degrees.

The jet fuel burned at an excess of 2000 degrees,
so it's likely the towers still would have collapsed, but some extra time would have allowed further evacuation efforts.
