  1. Re:Conkers on The Most Dangerous Toys of 2011 · · Score: 1

We did this as kids until the "Chestnut Blight" forced the cutting down of virtually all the chestnut trees in the town I grew up in. I can remember collecting bags of chestnuts, and how beautiful they looked upon opening the shell; they never looked that pretty no matter how much shellac or varnish I put on them. Great game, thanks for the memory!

My brother and I had a similar game; one of us would toss regular darts into the air and the other would run around holding a dart board on his head, trying to catch it. Good fun. We also used to toss Boy Scout(tm) hatchets and "official, balanced" throwing knives purchased from Boy's Life ads at an old tree stump in the yard until one day my brother missed and hit the neighbor's LTD. We also used to empty the powder out of shotgun shells and put it into drinking straws with paper fins and fire them off that same stump. We were generally unsupervised and managed to survive all kinds of great stuff, like building mini-bikes, giant stilts, tree houses, stuff like that. When I see how my grandkids are being raised I feel sad. They don't get to do shit.

I'm certain that someone will call bullshit on this story but I don't care, because I know it's true. Last summer on the way to work on an interstate, I passed an asshole riding a motorcycle, both hands off the grips and texting! I have no idea how he even kept the bike moving at speed, cruise control or something? The honest truth and complete douchery on his part. Also, 2 years ago I was stopped in my car, with my blinker on, waiting to make a left-hand turn and was slammed into by another asshole who was texting. He didn't touch his brakes and made no effort to stop; the douche was looking down at his phone when he hit me and had the balls/stupidity to argue with the cop on the scene that he had a right to be texting and I was in the wrong... typical fucking, self-centered, self-entitled moron.

I'm in favor of disabling the service on any mobile device moving over 5 mph. IMO, there is no reason for anyone to be calling/texting from a moving vehicle.

I'm not certain how you come to this conclusion; if you have good credit right now, you can get a 3.5% - 4:00% mortgage. That's $350-$400 per $100,000. In any market in the US, there are really great deals on property at the moment and if you don't "go big" you can get a really nice property that you own for less than or equal to rent. If you have always been financially conservative and fiscally responsible home ownership has never been more affordable. I am confused how "regiggering" and lower interest rates cause responsible people to "lose out". I'm not thrilled with the philosophy of the mortgage "bailouts", but I don't see how I have personally lost any money. Just my opinion and experience.

You can pick them up pretty cheaply; I got mine on Amazon for about $25. There is a "Getting Started With Arduino" book in PDF format linked from the Arduino website. There is also a pretty good book on Amazon which is an Arduino projects book (don't recall the name right off) but it's not bad. You'll probably want to pick up a small breadboard at RS or on-line; there are a few companies that have put together "kits" of parts to sort of go along with the book, but you can get the parts much cheaper at your RS by going though the bin. You probably have a "wall wart" PS around the house, strip the ends and add a couple of resistors on the breadboard and you have your PS for experimentation, or use the Arduino on-board PS (but you need to be cabled to a PC via USB). You can be quite well equipped for learning to mess with Arduino for under $100 (including the board). It is well worth the money if you have an interest in micro-controlers but not a lot of experience. Just my opinion.

tl;dr; Download the free book at the Arduino site to figure out if you want to move further.

About 9% of the population have an IQ above 120. The "stupid" have felt empowered in the last 30 years or so; they used to keep their opinions to themselves but a combination of right wing media (who know exactly how to manipulate the ignorant) and e-mail/Internet (a gathering place for the LCD) as well as other factors has fostered the belief that because there are a lot of "Me too's" out there, it makes them right. Mob mentality at it's finest; burn the witch. I refer you to Cyril M. Kornbluth's "The Marching Morons" published in 1951 for a humorous lampoon of this phenomenon. Obviously, there are other factors, such as easier available credit to the masses, the mistaken belief that the acquisition of material goods equals class equality and/or intelligence, etc. Just my observation and opinion.

Often, rosewood is a generic term for a lot of different species used in the construction of musical instruments, unless you are purchasing really high-end gear. IMO it has a different sound than maple for a bass. I like ebony the best, but you won't find many off-the-shelf basses with ebony fingerboards (except double basses). Many times you will find a "stained" ebony fingerboard on a bass. Anyway, if you want rosewood, then go for it. If you are really concerned about it, buy a used instrument but expect to pay a premium for a good instrument. Something a few years old, no worries; a late 60's Fender Jazz, different story. But you are re-using the wood if that concerns you. Synthetics sound like what they are; synthetic. Just my opinion.

Not wanting to appear to be a troll or anything, but what is your point? I do enjoy the notion of space travel, and I think we should try to be the best we can be, but really, what does it matter if it all goes to shit? Four billion years is quite a long time; I don't see anything in the species that indicates it will be around for a fraction of that. In less than a billion years, the sun will have increased it's output enough to boil all the water off the planet. Four billion years later (or so), it will most likely all be gone. I believe humans will be extinct long before the oceans boil.

Do a simple experiment; on your white board in your office, draw a line representing one billion years (MTBF for the earth); now above it, draw a dot that represents about 250,00-300,000 years (approximate time since archaic humans appeared on the scene). Now, look at the two lines (well, a line and a dot, really) and think about humans and how long a billion years is. Do you really believe that we won't destroy ourselves accidentally or on purpose long before the sun does?

The numbers are against us, all the way.

They're complete douches, but there are a lot more douches than smart people in this country and given enough time without being slapped down, they will prevail.
