When "Bladerunner" first came out I called bullshit on the "photothingamizer" that let Deckard scan around in a photo and pick up and enhance images from a convex mirror in the photo.

Once again, it looks like I was wrong.

This technology shit is just plain scary.

    Just Some Guy.

Thanks for not posting AC. The fundies around here (SC) certainly do believe that the earth was created by a god in 6 days and that life was created here, and only here, nowhere else. I have family members that subscribe to these views and will most certainly pray for your eternally-damned soul if you don't agree with them. While you describe yourself as a fundie, the fact that you can entertain a notion of a planet older than 6000 years (I think that's what I've been told the age of the earth actually is) would indicate that you are trying to balance a spiritual life with a scientific view. Hardly a fundie position, IMO.

Prior to the latest round of Mars exploration there was a lot of pulpit raging around here about holding strong to the mast of the ship of faith. As more and more evidence has come forward establishing a good case for the existance of water on Mars, this position has been revised. And part of a bigger, unfathomable plan. And not talked about a lot. Which is/was my point. Now, you might not think that these folks represent mainstream christian beliefs, but down here you better believe that they do. And the fact that they will revise their beliefs (not facts, but beliefs) to fit the facts is the (to me) key to the problem with organised religion.

To respond to your last sentance, I don't believe that religion and science are incompatible, I believe that they are apples and oranges. One is a personal belief and the other is a provable, demonstratable fact.

    Thanks for the response.

Time to revise the docs, I guess.

This is spot on. As an IT Director of a college within a university, I can confirm that it's almost impossible to do any kind of network/email management without everyone screaming "Spyware" or "Academic Freedom", short-circuiting the best laid plans. Actually, it's a pretty frustrating situation. It might be easier if there was more support at the university level, but in our case, it is non-existant. Our administration refuses to block any type of attachment, be it PIF, EXE or HEYIMAVIRUSANDIMGOINGTOFUCKWITHYOURSYSTEMS, let alone the actual cutting of student access to the world. Our administration would probably wet themselves if they read this article. A few years ago I wasted a lot of time on an "Advisory" committee, only to see any and all suggestions go into the system with absolutely no action on the part of administration on any of the suggestions made. Given this kind of non-corporate "hands off 'cause we might get sued" attitude, we're seeing more and more colleges unlinking from the main systems, running their own networks, mailservers (so they can block this kind of crap) managing their own switches so they can block infected machines until they're cleaned up and (OH NO!) pushing DAT files and patches down the wire. Of course, central administration still takes all of our student tech fees and gives nothing (substantial) back. I often wonder just how long a private sector operation would last if they allowed this kind of foolish stupidity to prevail on their "campus".

Dude. Back in the late 50's - early 60's there was a guy with a show that defined geekdom for those of us who are "of the Geeze" - Don Herbert, "Mister Wizard". Never missed a Saturday show. He's the reason I got my first microsocpe and chemistry set - and proceeded to set the basement on fire. No neat explosion story, just a wicked cool alcohol burner and a passion to see what just might burn. Hehehe. Man, did I get my ass kicked for that! Mr. Wizard's stuff was always tame on the surface, but contained the grain of scientific truth needed to extrapolate bitchin' weapons if you just thought hard enough about it. Vinegar and baking soda and a cork made a cool little power boat. Vinegar and baking soda in a almost full to bursting balloon tossed into the sister's bedroom made for a nasty mess! Heh. Good ol' days! Bill Nye was a lightweight.

  9. Strattera (atomoxetine) as an alternative on Working with ADHD? · · Score: 1

Strattera is proving to be an effective drug for adult ADHD and a good alternative to Ritalin with very few side effects. It's also the only FDA approved drug for A-ADHD. Interestingly enough I just had a conversation with my physician about this topic today. I am 50 years old and have known for years that I have a number of "classic" A-ADHD symptoms but had no interest in all the traditional psychotropics and their fairly nasty side-effects, not to mention the social stigma associated with employers/peers finding out I was using them.

I have to agree with the poster who said that meds can make the difference between keeping a professional position and ending up on the public dole or worse. I find that as I get older the depression is getting worse as well as a growing difficulty multi-tasking. It isn't noticable to my employer or collegues yet (I hope) but it is to me and my family, hence the discussion with my PCP today.

Yeah, a lot of folks find it a joke, and it's an easy one. Posting about it on slash is just asking for cheap shots from the room temps out there, but I admire the original poster's courage putting it out there as a serious question in a professional community. It didn't even enter my mind to ask the slashdot crowd about this, but as soon as I saw it I felt a lot better. I'll bet I'm not the only one.

I hope he gets to see this posting, as atomoxetine seems to be a real alternative to the traditional medications.

And no, I'm not affiliated with the drug industry in any traditional way.

  15. Re-packaged VIA-TV? on Are Video Phones Back From The Dead? · · Score: 1

These units look suspiciously a lot like the Via-TV units that were being sold about 5 years ago. Same starting pricepoint, pretty much the same look as the telephone units. I own a couple of the external units that attach to the telephone and television. They *kinda* worked but they took a lot of fiddling to get set up (best connect I ever got was 28Kb). A lot of times 5 or 6 calls had to be made with repeated attempts to start the cameras. We bought them at a time when we weren't living on the mainland and wanted to see family and friends. And we *did* get them for our parents so they could see grandkids. But they just couldn't connect very well, and when they did it was a pretty lousy picture. Toward the end Via-TV stopped selling the television setup and were selling only the telephone version (like the units pictured). The price had dropped to about $150.00 US IIRC, and no support was available for the old cameras. At the end we were picking up the TV setups for $100.00 US a pair at discount houses and on the web. A bit more than they were worth, IMO.
