Yes, and they are very good at it. If you want that $299 to actually be able to function anywhere near the reasonable expectation of a 'new pc'; you will spend around a grand to make the cheapest piece of crap usable. Not to mention the $24 free shipping and the free printer for $67. How about that 6' USB A-B cable for $24.99? Dude...

Child comes home from school to find that sneaky ol dad has reached the bleeding edge of technology by installing some n*n*nnyish program access. Child talks to other child on irc; other child tells first child how to disable said program. Child then plays sweetest first person shooter of the current time frame give or take a year. Child becomes a computer technician in spare time to save on cost of computer use. Child becomes adult, starts working locally as a tech for mom n' pop shops. Adult has failed marriage and 1 child. Child expresses interest in computer games that may be offensive. Adult buys child a computer and tells them to mow lawns for software money. I've got an old sparc classic running a load of woody that was installed in June of `01. It runs great for a 50MHz sun4m with 72MB of ram that is up 24/7. I suppose I will still be happy with it if it caught on fire and didn't unmount my filesystems before powering off. Thanks to Debian I have had several years of enjoyment out of a machine that was not at all enjoyable previous to becoming a penguin.

If rajr bites the dust, he will likely be replaced by a newer, faster, x86. I would be compelled to run something newer than woody on this machine.

So I will be moving on to something more mainstream in my little home user world. I think this bears some resemblence to what is happening in the business world in terms of replacing older, not-so-common hardware and software(where applicable).

Whatever happens I'll (thankfully) still be able to enjoy free software.

Hello, I am 20 and just got a computer 5 years ago. I would like to touch base with you on a few points.

1.)Linux is an operating system, it is a freely distributed clone of the unix operating system.
    (See 'Operating System'; 'UNIX')

2.)There are *dozens* of different 'flavors' or variants of UNIX.
(See http://www.ntlug.org/~cbbrowne/unixlist.html for a large but far-from-complete list)

3.)UNIX was being developed by 'hackers' when you were 33 years old. (The word hacker was in use even at this time. The definition could be approximated to something as simple as 'computer enthusiast' but alas, it has been perverted by the media and the misinformed.)

4.)You rely on unix every day.
(Have you ever eaten at Taco Bell? Have you ever had a catscan or an x-ray at the hospital? Do you read email? Do you view web pages? Can you wager a guess at what operating system(s) keep our 'precious military systems' running? Have you ever wondered how they made those dinosaurs come to life in the movie 'Jurassic Park'? UNIX makes all of these things a reality.)

5.) The correct term is 'Hack the planet'

With that out of the way, please allow me to respond on a personal note.

You speak of freedom very strongly; so strongly in fact that one may be led to beleive that your concept of freedom is very important to you. You have the freedom to express your opinion just like everyone else. You have the freedom to express your fear of something you do not understand. I find it ironic that you considder something that was created in the very spirit of freedom to have 'struck a deep blow to our freedoms'. I find it ironic that you use stereotypes and name calling to justify opinions which are grossly presented as facts. Linux/UNIX to me is a means of income, a rewarding hobby, and a great teacher. I do not use it for illegal purposes. I do not invade others' privacy, nor do I destroy anything in the process.

    They say:
"Guns don't kill people, people kill people"
    I say:
"Computers don't hurt people, people hurt people"

It's all the same; user error.
