I use AVG from Grisoft and just updated the signature file. I am SOOooo glad I use a freeware/shareware product that keeps up with REAL virus and not marketing.
As they say here in the U.S. "There ought to be a law..."
We went on one last year. They had an internet cafe. You could connect for $0.75/min. If you wanted the priviledege of using AOL you could send an e-mail for a mere flat rate of $3.95! They never mentioned that you could use yahoo or hotmail - which I did. You could but an unlimited pass for, I think, $75, but I didn't want to spend all my cruise time on the net.
I did manage to flirt my way to some free time. I 'caught' the hostess using AIM... I told her I was an IM user and wanted to see if some of my friends were on. She logged me in so I didn't have to pay the $$ but I could use AIM express.
It was OK... not DSL/Cable speeds but faster than 56K.
I have been doing SysAdmin for a mere 3.5 years. At work we have a few that I need to deal with every so often: HP-UX, Solaris, AIX, SuSE, and Redhat. Seems like all the Techie SysAdmins (myself included) have taken to using the OS they know for a project and then expecting other folks to pick it up ("Oh, it is close enough..."). I wish our company has the insight to pick a standard - 1 or 2! I would LOVE for the versions to follow the same file placement conventions, command conventions, and system management tools. Maybe, someday....
I bought a Gateway awhile back and have been very happy with it. I am upset that GW has dropped AMD as a processor. I am happy that GW is doing something against this stupid legislation. I still don't know if I would buy another GW PC though.... and I am in the market for 2 for my kiddos.
I don't want to upgrade my OS from Win98SE so I am 'stuck' with going to a 7500. The 8500 looks nice but I have so much legacy hardware that I would lose all of it just to gain better video.
Until robots get to the price of a washer/dryer we won't see them much of anywhere. Look how long it is taking to get HDTV going in the states! And DVD players might overtake VCRs this year. And forget about the DVD recorders! Everytime I see or hear about a new gadget that claims it is priced near that of a luxury car I cringe. Maybe my great-great grandkids will get to play with them.
I already downloaded it, but probably won't play it. (sure...) I was astounded that the server was not slashdotted. I guess there are not as many nostalgic slashdotters as I thought.
Honest I did try my best to get a copy! Except the site is blocked by my work so I have to wait till I get home.
I don't mind paying for a site that the content is created by the site manager BUT since/. content is created by the users - they both submit the story as well as all these replies then the users need to get paid for thier work. Do I get a discount if a story I submit is accepted? What if my reply is a good one (earn Karma AND get a rebate)? I would rather have something like I have with prohosting-I pay a flat fee and no ads for a year NOT per view.
...at work. Seems some folks here at work have too much time on thier hands and so our company has started blocking sites. The first sites to go were job posting sites... then there was competitor sites... Now there seems to be no rhyme or reason. If you want to access a blocked site you have to submit a business case (I had to do this for HP!). I don't like it (yes, I could work elsewhere). In my management days, if you had time to surf it was your supervisors fault - they didn't give you enough to do. If you were caught with some p0rn or such on your monitor, well, that was also a case for disciplinary (sp?) actions. Not blocking.
I don't plan on filtering what my kids can surf too. I plan on being involved with them and having an open enough relationship.
They tried filters at the library but since they block proxy sites they really didn't block anything. The took the filters off and put the comptuers out in the open where folks could walk by and see what was going on. THAT was the best filter.
In fact, it should be per part, not for a whole unit. I tend to buy and build my own. Yes, there are some organizations who want older systems but the new applications will not run on these and then the charities are hosed. As a consumer, I need to be responsible for what I do with my trash. There should be a fee added at the point of purchase and when the part is recycled, you get the fee (or part of) it back. Want to donate to an organization? Go head, if they can't use it then they can recycle and get the money.
I don't buy the arguement that the fee will stop people from buyine new stuff. It hasn't stopped people from getting new tires (recycle fee), an oil change (environmental fee), and drinking beer or soda ($0.05 or more back!!!).
I try to dispose of my electronics responsibly but there are too many people who just toss things in the trash. You HAVE to hit people where they will pay attention - in the pocket.
Hmmm.... if these things uction for 10K or more wonder what the average joe on the street will end up paying for these things? IN fact, this could turn out to be a new way to buy a house or a car. Ahhh!! Bidding for EVERYTHING!
Ok, so I "borrowed" the quote. Congradtulations! My wife and I celebrated our 10 year anniversary this past September and it gets better every year (no, my wife didn't make me post that - she doesn't read/.). Nothing makes life more enjoyable than finding someone to share everything with then have a family! Our two girls are such a blessing! In this age of 'things' and 'stuff' it is still the people that count the most. You two just have found the person to put at the top of each others list.
Why don't these companies come out and sue right away if it such a blatant violation of a patent or something? If I were the judge, I'd say "Well, the feedback stuff has been around for 3 years, you say you have had the patent for 5, why'd did you wait so long? Dismissed" Are IP lawyers like amblance chasers? Are there law firms who do nothing but troll IP patents then alert the holder to a violation (and by the way it will only cost you $$$).
Democracy? I am glad to see we (the USofA) isn't the only country that doesn't trust its citizens. Does Australia have the 'executive privilege' rule too so the government can do what it wants regardless of the masses? (Maybe your leader, like GW here, can silence this mess by making it 'national security').
What if I might not be a subscriber but happen to go through thier product? What if a subtle change in the headers gives the impression that I might be doing something illegal? Now along comes the FBI who has another ISP bugged and asks for details. Since comcast keeps no logs of what it does it doesn't remember or even admit to mistakes. FBI says cool and I go off to jail.
And PriceWaterhouseCoopers isn't evil on Mondays!

Is there an english version of c't? That would be a hoot to get over on this side of the pond.

Don't all the search engines 'deep link'? I guess the new search engines will only point to home pages. What a crock!

I have been looking for a more open game console. I couldn't justify JUST games. I'd like to do a bit more.... Hurray!

Thanks! I just killed 20 minutes listening to this stuff! Horrible but addictive! Har! Thanks for the pointer....
a DoS attack on a Teddy Bear?

Please tell me why I would want something to look like an MS product?

My company has the site blocked on the firewall so it HAS to be a Bad Thing(tm).

I wonder which Congress person got burned on the pyrmaid thing THEN screamed it was SPAM.
What happens if I sneeze? What if I develop pick-eye? What if my contact pops out since I didn't blink?
