Dear US Government, Leave Microsoft the hell alone.
I like Windows, I like IE, I prefer Google over MSN and nothing's stopping me from using it.
Microsoft products are default.. NO KIDDING, it's THEIR OS, not yours or their competitors.
If Google made an OS and integrated Google search technology would everyone cry foul? Probably not, the hypocritical zealots.
Let Microsoft include a default browser, search engine, mail client, antivirus/antispam, office suite, whatever. If there's something different I prefer I'll switch that element.
I don't think I've read such a thoroughly well put together response to criticism in my life. I think it would be irresponsible simply reduce their reply to "they simply don't agree? what an ego!" when it's more akin to "for X reason, we don't acknowledge this criticism."

Mortal Kombat -- original was okay, sequels sucked. Street Fighter -- SO bad Super Mario Bros. -- Bad, but not as bad as Boll's stuff. Resident Evil -- Excellent Tomb Raider -- Loved them Final Fantasy -- great
Bolls movies have no redeeming qualities. It would have been nice if someone had made a movie based on Max Payne. Great storyline with more than just action.
This is _EXACTLY_ the kind of experience I and many of my friends have had.
I took up FreeBSD not because I needed a server OS, (although it's now my career, so thank God) but because the IRC/newsgroup Linux community was EXACTLY as TetryonX described.
And don't go running to the linux community for help when you do run into problems. They can be remarkably unhelpful beyond laughing at you for not already knowing the answers or repeating 'RTFM'.
The same can't be said for the FreeBSD community, but then it's a smaller, more niche community.
Speak for yourself, I'm an IT Manager for a Communications company and we've found MySQL to perform far worse for heavy load usage as compared to Postgres. We've migrated completely to Postgres with no regrets and significant performance increase.

Exactly. technical details of his post aside, he's right. Windows is easier to use. They don't spend hundreds of millions of dollars on research to make their UI intuitive for sh*ts'n'giggles.

Seriously, it's great that you gave the show a chance, I really couldn't ask for more of ya. If you didn't enjoy the glib writing style of Buffy the Vampire slayer, you probably couldn't appreciate the style of Firefly. The character interaction in the series is really what did it for me.
I could go on ad-nauseum about this highlight or that to try to support my claim that Firefly was a phenominal series, but I don't think I'd change anyone's opinions Guess I'll spend my newfound spare time watching the series again instead:)

Actually, it _technically_ isn't the job of an engineer to figure out what the user wants. Engineers are supposed to produce systems to exact specifications, those specifications are drawn up by Analysts.
If an Analysist doesn't do his/her job and determine the needs/wants for the system then the Engineer can't do his/her job either.
I'm not antisocial by any means, but nothing makes me undermine a company faster than it trying to force things on me like social elements:P
I don't want little trinket rewards, I don't want invitations to social gathers. I want management to leave me alone and let me develop a social circle with it's traditions and morale boosting nature all by myself.

Wonder if Zonealarm has addressed the issue that was brought forth about version 4, which is that it's hook into the tcp/ip stack could be hijacked by malware.
Early in high-school (Grade 9 or so) I was kicked out of the computers class for the semester for changing the prompt on the computer I was using (which no-one ever sees except administrators) to 'You've Been Hacked $p$g'
And again I was kicked out of computers in my last year because "we can't trust you, despite having zero evidence that we shouldn't."
Both of my parents are "professionals". One is in IT, the other is in administration.
When you're paid a professional salary, and working for a signifigant company, they should be more forgiving about minor details like that and be more concerned about the quality of your work.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying let them use GPLed code without them having to release their source, I'd never support that stance. I'm saying don't try to force them into openning their source if they don't want to. If they don't want to open it, let them rip out all that viral GPL code and write something proprietary to replace it. Since all the source for the GPL stuff is available, figureing out how it works at a core level and writing something that does the same thing couldn't be THAT big of a chore.
Of course, that depends on how complicated the GPL stuff they're using is. But for a router, how complicated could it be?
