  2. Re:UFOs on Gigantic Spiral of Light Observed Over Norway; Rocket To Blame? · · Score: 2, Insightful

Witnesses from Trøndelag to Finnmark compared the amazing display to anything from a Russian rocket to a meteor to a shock wave -- although no one appears to have mentioned UFOs yet.

That's because a UFO isn't an explanation -- a UFO is an "unidentified flying object". You could compare it to specific instances of unexplained aerial phenomena -- though that's unlikely to help explain it unless the conditions surrounding this occurrence help explain some whole class of previously-unexplained aerial phenomena -- but to compare it to UFOs in general is somewhat pointless since the only thing that that class shares in common is that they appear above the ground and are not explained.

    What about XBox media center

It may not suit your desired config, but I love the combination of XBMC on my old original xbox networked to my main PC which does all the heavy lifting (downloading and recording) to shares the xbox can access across my LAN. I run an old original xbox I got off ebay in the loungeroom hooked up to my 42" Panasonic 1280 plasma via the component cable and it looks absolutely fantastic at 720p. The xbox is patched into my LAN, then in my office, I have my main PC which is always on, and I have setup a share on it where I put all my divx files (I use altbinz rss feeds straight into custom folders). I bought a cheap TV tuner card (Winfast pxDVR3200HBDA - onboard hardware mpeg - approx $100AUS) for my main pc and I just record shows straight to a share which I can access from the xbox in the lounge. The provided winfast software is pretty clunky but it handles my scheduled recordings fine. The setup works a treat for me, the library mode keeps track of watched shows, and the wife can drive XBMC easily via the standard xbox remote. NB: The standard original xbox cannot play MKV or other highdef content. If I record on my tuner card in the office at full high def, the files are too jerky to play in the lounge room. So I just record at standard digital def and play and they look fine. Realistically, I hardly watch much live TV. Its mainly for the kids afternoon shows. The only reason I would build a dedicated standalone PVR box is if standard resolution divx content started to dry up, and I needed a more powerful platform to play highdef content. I am running Windows 7 64 ultimate and I did try the built in media centre, It is very nice, but the recording format is an issue. I could convert them back to a format xbmc could handle but I got sick of it and just went back to recording standard winfast mpgs again.

  20. Royal Australian Air Force on How Do Militaries Treat Their Nerds? · · Score: 3, Interesting

Between 1992 and 2005, my experience was the RAAF treated their nerds exactly like general society treated their nerds. It was fine to be a technical genius but only you were "cool" and in the "in crowd". Otherwise you were ostracised, just like civilian life. Unless you were hidden away underground in some concrete hole with a bunch of other like minded individuals. Generally though these people were often referred to as "REMF's" (rear eschillon mother fkrs) and "blunts" (non pointy end) type people. Often in these environments, the security and "secret squirrel" IT was so structured and controlled that there was little opportunity for creativity. There were enough people to compensate for the inefficiencies in the existing IT solutions. When it came to promotion and career prospects, the RAAF always tended to look after their "warriors". Even if it was an orderly room, admin type, staff member who sat in several air conditioned offices in several hot countries, shuffled papers and got a chest full of medals. IMHO with so much action over the last 10 years, military units around the world will continue be run by "tough", decorated warriors for a while yet, and generally they treat nerds as tools to be kept in their bottom drawer. Maybe its changed drastically in the last 4 years... actually, probably not.
