This is of course, going to get modded down into oblivion, but damnit, this is going too far now.
Are are you mods on crack? This is the lamest troll I've ever seen and you tools are lapping it up? Fuck me, but is slashdot ever full of POSERS if you guys can't tell that this is pure crap.
FreeBSD has Linux have always been very neck to neck. While linux would be a touch faster at this, FreeBSD would be a touch faster at this, etc. Linux has better hardware support, FreeBSD tends to have better stability. It goes on like that and pretty much always had.
FreeBSD has not benefitted from Apple. Apple has benefitted from BSD. Purely a one way relationship. Since when did Apple write FreeBSD's VM and SMP code, that makes "OSX running effiecently" -- OSX is not efficent. Its bloated to the max. You might dig is GUI and design, thats fine, but you can't tell anyone that its effiecient code because you don't have to look hard for benchmarks to make that claim a joke.
FreeBSD does not run on Apples mach microkernel, holy shit, how did this slip by? Is this just Apple fanbois modding anything even remotely pro-apple up? This has got to be happening here. What the hell is this long and precarious history of FreeBSD -- its bloody free software, what exactly is supposed to happen to it? And... ooh! So annoying, the troll even posts about how FreeBSD has wicked HARDWARE support now -- argh! Like they even run on the same machines sand you guys still modded it up!
If god were real he would strike you down for modding this up, even if you are a mindless apple fanboi.
could that be because there are so few linux users that it makes no sense to publish linux games separately?
No, it could not be. Because by many accounts there are more linux users then mac users around, and at least, my personal experience backs this up.
x86 linux users can also easliy boot into windows for games like they do now. I suspect they keep that in mind when they ship CD.
They do keep that in mind, but its unfair that they do. This is precisely the problem, really, that they assume they we do all have copies of windows around. Its pretty easy to pirate windows of course. Thats a problem linux users have that mac users don't. This is honestly a good point and I don't really have anything to say about it other then the fact its unfair -- a lot of people stick with windows because of exactly this problem. If it wasn't a problem we'd see a nice solid jump in linux users I imagine. Many hardcore gamers are people who know how to use their computers and actually like computers -- prime spawning grounds for linux users.
Also, there is a difference between computer harware and software. Many linux users I know don't even install Mplayer DLL packages becasue they dont want anything closed source on their PCs. The Linux community is very politically motivated against non-free software, I doubt you can deny that. Look at any thread about a new commercial program for linux and there will be a few nut jobs demanding not only the source but also the rights to modify and redistribute the program.
You've answered it for me, actually, ".. there will be a few nut jobs..." -- and there you have a it. A few people who can't stand any sort of commerical software. As rabidly pro OSS as I am, I agree with Bruce Perens that the two can co-exist. Games is an example where they simply must co-exist. For gaming webpages (say, linuxgames.com?) you don't hear to many gamers demanding that Doom3 be open sourced. This arguement isn't really valid, because that number may be vocal, but they are not very many and they are probably not realistic.
This is a troll that I hear a lot. The "linux community is used to getting everything for free!".
Yeah, like computer hardware, and say, Doom3, or UT2004. We got all that for free. Oh wait, we totally didn't and your a troll. Right.
The reason that linux sales don't blow mac sales out of the water is not a problem with the linux community, its a problem with the developers and publishers. #1: Linux versions come out months after the windows version. #2 Linux version is rarely properly done, and is generally inferior to the windows release, ie, no movies, no surround sound, relatively poor performance, etc. #3: The linux version, if available, is usually thrown in either on the windows cd, or off a cheesy download -- so no one keeps real track anyway.
So there, how the fuck is anyone gonna know how much linux sales represent when the publishers go out of the way to screw us over? Mac games come in Mac boxes, Linux games come in windows boxes (AT BEST) or on second-thought ftp servers.
All I know, its that for every mac user I know, I know ten linux users, and I work at a Mac authorized reseller/service store. When a linux game that comes out thats good (ie, not solitare, or a lame puzzle game) I buy it.
Reality check: OS X isn't unix, its just not so stop saying it is. Its a mach kernel with some bsd stuff tossed in. Its unixy, I'll give you, but not so unixy that its a unix. That a minor technical detail I suppose, it its annoying that mac posers are trying to call themselves unix guys now. Your not.:)
Now -- to the important issue of why your on crackrock. OS X is not free. Its not free in any sense of the word, or in any sense that matters.
Allow me to explain.
One, its not available freely under any circumstances, unless you purchase an Apple Mac computer. Well, I'd rather not, so it'll never be free for me in monitary terms.
Two, and more importantly, its not free as in freedom. Read the license its under, thats not really open source no matter what Bruce Perens and his gang at OSI says. Bruce is my homeboy from way back when, but he's just plain wrong on when it comes to Apple and it smells like a sell out. Its not free, its just not.
Therefore, Apple isn't offering us anything that is any good to the sort of people who care about Linux. I gather that you just use Linux because there are circumstances where you find it useful, thats fine. Enjoy. However, your not a real open source person because the issue of freedom doesn't matter to you, as you have made very clear with your fauning of Apple and its bastard OSX. I'm glad that you've found true happiness with OSX, but allow me to be clear on this: We don't care, because OSX doesn't make us (Open Source, Linux and freedom loving people) happy, because it doesn't suit any of our needs. So if you think linux missed the boat, thats fine, but its also entirely irrelevent to absolutely everything. Linux is progressing at a steady rate everywhere.
Even on the desktop linux is slowly but surely pushing forward. Thats fine with us. I gather its not fine with you, so, stick with OSX. But don't tell us that our solution is no good because we like ours better then we like yours.
.. that they paid 3 thousand bucks for a computer sold by a company of assholes. They've spent all this time learning to use Mac OS/OSX and now that they've finally learned how to make the damn os work as they want, they don't want to admit that the company they are supporting is essentially a identical, if less successful version of what most PC users are supporting.
Apple's just another company, it deserves the same suspicion as the rest of them, anyone who says otherwise is a mindless fanboi.
Parent is 100% correct. I repair Toshiba and IBM/Lenovo laptops for a living, and laptops -will- fail. Many laptops come from the factories with serious flaws..
I can't tell you how many clients get stuck with a 1000$ (CDN) repair cost because their laptop broke on the second year.
Extended warranties on laptops are a good deal if only that they guarantee you have a laptop for a least three years.
No seriously. I agree, lets drop the touchy feely crap, thats in EVERY action movie, and just make it an action movie like Woo, in fact, does.
You know something, when I go to an action movie, I generally go with my bros, and we expect to see explosions, machinegunning, dead bodies piling up, and little else. No where in that list is romance, because women won't like the movie just because some guy bangs a chick between fight scenes.
Just.. make the love interest crap in the drama section and the explosions and dead body piles in the action section. Nice and seperate. You can take your gf to the drama movie in an attempt to score, and you can bring your bros do the action movies for a wicked time of gore.
What the fuck is wrong with longer fight scenes? Cripes thats what an ACTION MOVIE is supposed to be. One big ass fight scene.
In fact, I'm gonna elaborate a touch. Here is the format I want from an action movie.
Scene Opens: It shows me the bad guy, and tells me when I hate him. He should be cool, but in a bad way.
Next Scene: Good guy somewhere, he is shown to be cool. He's probably training with rocket launchers or something stupid-but-cool. We don't have to be shown that he's compassionate or anything, because showing us the rocket launchers is enough to make us like him.
Rest of the movie: Fight scene.
There. Thats it, the perfect movie. Done. --SD [/rant]
I keep hearing this all the fuckin time. I keep hearing it because I'm reading this crap in the positively modded posts. I keep reading, "I'm gonna get modded down because I don't like linux/firefox/whatever" and its like +5 insightful. Right now the GP is +3 insightful.
He's not modded down is he? Because slashdot mods aren't actually that stupid. The ones that make STUPID, IGNORANT posts about linux/firefox/whatever get modded down and the losers who wrote the posts think its because they went against the mindshare, when really its because their point was hollow and incorrect.
If you actually read this site once and a while you'd see plenty of criticisms against linux/firefox/whatever and plenty of posts about people using MSIE successfully, even at the +5 level so like this stupid idea just die.
Ok, I don't see that happening, but if you make something like that public, you can expect that. Likewise, if you release code on the net, someone might say it sucks. You state a belief system on the net, someone might say it sucks.
If he wasn't willing to endure critisism of his faith, then he would have kept it private. He didn't, so he is willing to put up with it.
Would you have said such a thing if he was, oh say, a scientologist?
Didn't Max Paine have something like this? With everything all wierd and green and stuff. And many other games I'm sure. I donno, I didn't read the article, but sounds like a retarded thing to patent anyway.
Parent (Taladar) is getting flamed, but he shouldn't because he is write, and the other posts are wrong. No, they don't get it.
Allow me to explain. Linux isn't made for Joe Sixpack. Its just not, Joe Sixpack was never in the design idea of linux. Thats because Linux wasn't written for him, linux was written for us, people who like computers, like pissing around with the system internals, and like the command line. People who think source code is cool, and that scripting is a fun and easy passtime are the audience of linux.
If anyone else finds it useful, then thats nice, they are welcome to it. But it wasn't made for them.
If you don't like Linux, who fuckin cares? Go use whatever OS you like, be it windows or osx. And don't post on slashdot claiming to 'get it' when you very, very obviously don't.
But I'd be pretty stoked about it if I could sit outside (think BEACH) all day with a laptop. How sweet would that be?
Pretty friggan unsweet. It'd be lame as hell, all that dust clogging up your fans, wrecking havoc with the drives... not to mention the HEAT -- I mean its beach hot, which is probably too hot for a laptop to be on for long.
The biggest by far problem, however, is reading a LCD in natural light. Computers, and their users, were not meant for use in natural light. You couldn't read a damn thing on your LCD out there.
It would SUCK. Leave your laptop at home if your going to the stupid beach.
I didn't get it either. Mind you, I'm Canadian. But we like money too though, if only from afar or distant memory. I'm paying... 1.05 for a litre of gas! In american measurements and money thats.. 0.8762USD for 0.264172051 US gallon, so 3.31 for a gallon of gas. Don't bring your SUV up to Canada:D
Still, if my health-o-meter shows green, then it was probably made by this guys company.

Linksys sells larger, more powerful antenna for their routers.. and there are lots of other companies that sell bigger, better signal boosters. Even little dishes to increase range go for half that amount -- in Canadian money.
Its lame using a wireless router like that anyway, what you -should- be doing is slapping a decent PCI card into your server and using that. Way better solution.
Money has been the #1 concern for Americans/since there was such a thing as Americans/. There has never been a time, or real or imagined, where money wasn't number one in the minds of Americans. Americans love their damn money. I love their damn money too. Not as much since its value is slipping mind you.
Anyway, but seriously.. I suspect most people value money over everything else.
Hell, the fuckin Magpie's outside my house will grab anything shiney or gold-like. They are BIRDS and they love gold and haven't figured out what to do with it yet. Its this planet man. I'd be surprised if money wasn't number one anywhere in this galaxy.
To be honest, I like it that way, I think its funny:)
We are talking about someone in Canada, when you get a job here that doesn't pay minimum wage you don't just quit it, even if its complete hell (and it usually is) -- because its so damn hard to find a decent IT job. The very best you can do is look for work while your working and hope someone is interested -- but just quitting a job here and sitting on unemployment while looking is a good way to end up selling your shit at the pawn shop to pay rent.
