In my experience, businesses are willing to pay more for good support. A perfect example is simply my job -- we charge more then the local mom-and-pop places but our service is fast and effective. We have experise when its required. When we say to a customer, well, product A is cheaper, but product B has superior support, they almost always go with B.
Its only the drooling masses that tend to go with the cheap consumer crap, businesses that want to stay in business more often know better.
While its true that a program could do that, in a unix like system it would be a trivial matter to remove the spyware, unlike, oh, say, windows where such a file can replicate itself all over the system, bury itself in the registry etc. It can only infect a single user, who, should he find a clue at some point, could remove it without having to run a bunch of strange -- often commerical -- tools.
No, your not going to let MS off this hook this time. Their OS sucks and thats final.
Gentoo's install time is totally misrepresented on/. -- not that I don't know your just fooling around -- but I mean, if you don't have a fast PC a stage3 install is pretty quick, you can get the system up and running in no time flat. Generally, there is a stage3 with cflags set to a reasonable default available for just about any common ix86 arch, there is rarely any need to do a stage 1 or 2. Compiling X can take a bit, and QT seems to take a lifetime, but it'll be done that day unless your system is really old.
(Besides, I don't think Gentoo is for everyone. Its a great distro and I love it, but I have different requirements of my OS then others. Ubuntu is just pure gold too. Just as long as its a linux. =)
I'll never understand this about american politics. Why exactly is a company working on a bill to broaden a regulatory bodies authority. I mean, why the hell are companies and corporations and other commerical groups creating bills. It just seems to me to be a world away from a Democracy where the Demos call the shots. Really disapointing.
(I'm Canadian mind you, so I'm looking in from the outside, but don't think for a picosecond that our gov't is any less corrupt, it merely manifests itself in different ways =)
He means that IE -provides- functionality and API's. Its part of the OS and uses the same calls as any other windows app... -and- it provides crap, which is why it is part of the os, so other Winprogs can use its 'functionality'.
Apple uses a security scare to tighten their restrictions on users.
BUT ITS DVD JONS FAULT!
Can you imagine yourselves saying that kind of COMPLETE BULLSHIT when Microsoft pulls the same stunts? Yeah fuckin right. No way pal.
You guys are so fuckin witless. When are you going wake up to the fact Apple is just another company that wants to control what was your computer, exactly like MS does, only they are coming at it from a different angle.
And your iTunes is just another way the RIAA to squeeze money out of its artists -- take a look on google about just about how of the bill goes to the artists, its just as bad was with CD's. Nothings changed, except you get a rosy feeling for legally getting it instead of downloading it.
Its far to soon and far to rare to say "Switching from IE isn't enough" (well, I don't think it is for Windows anyway, because well, your still running Windows right?)....
My point is, yeah, ok, there are security holes in Firefox, but they'll get fixed and the holes closed. With all the eyes on Firefox now, security issues are bound to come up.
OK. I just read TFA -- this guy is a loser. Check it out, you gotta agree to something to install the spyware? This guy is a Grade A+ Idiot(tm). He agrees to install a bunch of crap, then complains that Firefox's 'bravado' is gone in an instant.
Oh yeah, and comments switched off to 'save bandwidth' how about to say his sorry ass for a wicked flaming.
While I think that this behavior isn't exactly stand up, its pretty lame really...
But its not like we are all suddenly going to shout "Ha! Google broke one of their own rules, now they SUCK! Long live MS Search!"
Basically, its lame behavior, I don't think anyone is really going to argue that, but its not like they changed the Firefox page to require MSIE to view or something.
reading the title, you bloated sack of protoplasm =)
From the google page: "Google AdWords Support: Why do traffic estimates for my Ad Group differ from those given by the standalone tool?"
From the cache: "traffic estimator, traffic estimates, traffic tool, estimate traffic Google AdWords Support: Why do traffic estimates for my Ad Group differ from those given by the standalone tool?"
n00bs are not going to be messing around in the console. They won't use grep and find for a long time, if ever, they'll use gnome's search for files like an earlier poster mentioned.
Probably they won't be so silly as to save their files in some wierd place, they'll just save them in their work directory or something with the rest of their files.
Your still going to run out and buy the latest Apple gadget anyway. Just like the windows users are going to all run longhorn no matter what is wrong with it.
Its impossible to get a general feeling of what people are like from a place like Slashdot (its a small group, not everyone posts, not everyone posts how they really feel, only people with strong feelings tend to post, etc), but I generally get the impression that moral disgust goes only so far as the latest toy.
Windows users don't either. Trust me, they are shocked everytime they see the price tag of MS shit.
Businesses however, they don't give a shit and just buy whatever MS puts out. If office was for linux, businesses would probably buy it. Thats why there is no MS office for linux, you know?
You know what? I'm really sick of seeing OSX trolls posting all over slashdot.
Everytime ANY topic comes up, some OSX troll pipes in "So its just like OSX!" well, OSX isn't fully (or even mostly) open source, Quartz Extreme isn't an open standard, etc. Ok? Do you understand that? Even if it was, we like our software to be GPL'd so that we don't just shift ourselves from being slaves to Bill Gates and Microsoft, to being slaves of Steve Jobs and Apple. Mabye you don't care if you really 'own' your PC or not but we linux users do. So STFU with your OSX this and OSX stuff that.
Its even getting absurd. Someone mentions making a Linux network for sharing sound -- some OSX Troll pops in "Just spend thousand of dollars on mac parts and there you go! You don't have to use an inexpensive solution!"
Pretty soon I'm gonna start seeing "If those idiots voted in OSX instead of Bush everything would be perfect now".
The Gentoo-Emerge trolls never came close to the kind of witless trolling that you OSX fuckers are reaching!
I don't like your cheesy OS! I think the widgets are ugly! I think that stupid bar on the bottom of the screen looks like CDE back from the grave! I like my Athlon64 instead of your goddam PPC! I like my beige case instead of your tiny little silver box! I want to be able to open my case and see what shits inside it, and I don't want to have to use a fucking laptop harddrive in a non-portable computer!
Every-fucking-topic some OSX troll shoes his stupid platform in, its worse then the Liberal-Conservative crap from the Americans.
Look you obnoxious pricks -- not everyone digs your fucking Macs.
Sadly, MSIE is probably taking up all your memory, so Firefox has very little to play with. Really, on systems where there is enough free memory for both, Firefox is just about as fast loading up, and at least as fast operating.
Don't forget that MSIE is always in memory, last I had heard. IANAMSE. (I am not a MS employee -- thank god.)
Tell that to ATI -- they seem to be resisting acceleration pretty fuckin well. ;)

Right.
That makes you a homo sapiens compatible unit for the purposes of using an mp3 player.

(No, really.)
Sure, I can see the slashdot servers going down for a week, a power outage for a flood or the like.
Its not so unlikely we could see a week without a dupe.
