The parent is not full of shit as you are suggesting. He's correct about Apple. The happy guis and one button mouse has made you forget important things about OSX -- its still mostly closed source. Darwin is open, but its based on a platform that WAS MORE OPEN then it is now. A whole lot of other things they had to because of (L)GPL (KHTML, GCC). I'm pretty sure the rest of the stuff they have open sourced because it benefits them to do so -- ie, promotes mac standards. Rendezvous is a good example of this. They want to spread their way of doing this -- this isn't anything to do with gratitude or kindness. Apple doesn't have any of that. Its just another Company.

How quickly we forget that Mac hardware is a closed platform where developers of other operating systems such as linux are not cooperated with. Not all Macs work on Linux because Apple isn't nice with giving out hardware specs. But that doesn't matter, look at the pretty buttons. IBM's OpenPower5's deserve respect here for PPC, not Apple's crap. IBM's closer to a real open source company then Apple is because IBM does nothing but benefit from improvments to linux because they are not tied to a hardware platform, just support.

Apple hasn't thrown the OSS community anything really USEFUL yet, precisely because it doesn't want to fuel its competition.

Apple is just another company, perhaps more cagey then most, but still just another company. Get over it.

There are many ways to cause that program to crash, and many ways to make it messup and just save an empty file.

I don't have it installed at the moment (because its grossly unstable alphaware) but if I did, I could find you at least one repeatable crash in less then five minutes easily. Especially with tables, those are completely a perfect way to lose data with Abiword.

It seriously needs to have its developers stop messing around and start fixing bugs. Oh! and I'm not the only one. My roomie wanted an Office app that was slimmer then OOo, so I said "Try Abiword, it been a few years since I last tried it, I'm sure its stable now." and of course, it crashed on him in class, acted generally buggy and sucked. Its just alphaware plain and simple. He went with OOo and while its slow, its at least stable.
