Yes, if they insist. The question as I see it is why, when the web has made collaborative writing and self-publishing so easy, are students still using textbooks written for profit instead of altruism? Surely there is an abundance of talented and respected academics willing to write for the greater good?

  11. Re:Anode versus Cathode on Researchers Report Super-Powered Battery Breakthrough · · Score: 2

The anode is the side current flows into, not necessarily the negative one. From wiki:

In a discharging battery or galvanic cell (diagram at right), the anode is the negative terminal because it is where the current flows into "the device" (i.e. the battery cell). This inward current is carried externally by electrons moving outwards, negative charge moving one way constituting positive current flowing the other way.

In a recharging battery, or an electrolytic cell, the anode is the positive terminal, which receives current from an external generator. The current through a recharging battery is opposite to the direction of current during discharge; in other words, the electrode which was the cathode during battery discharge becomes the anode while the battery is recharging.

Motion tracking seems excessive when the poster would be satisfied with a simple pulse. I would suggest an accelerometer mounted to baton/conductor and a rumble motor ripped from an old gamepad for the singer (or an earpiece).

For a no-tech alternative try having the singer sit/stand near the conductor and have the latter tap their feet (hard) along with the baton.

  22. What you describe are homonyms, not really what the parent was referring to. It would be more accurate to say that we have different words such as "bear", "withstand", "tolerate" etc. I still disagree with the notion that modern languages aren't as rich and nuanced as their ancient precursors; in fact, I'm inclined to think that the opposite may be true as more time has passed for neologisms to be created. For example, I doubt that ancient Greeks had a word equivalent to "serendipity", not when they supposedly hadn't even got round to making the distinction between blue and bronze (to be taken in jest).

  23. It's worth mentioning that women bishops were voted against not by the ordained ministers, but by the laity, who are essentially just trumped-up churchgoers.

  25. Re:The flatlining of the Hollywood movie scene on Animation Sophistication: The Croods Required 80 Million Compute Hours · · Score: 2

Hollywood is indeed in decline - back in the days when Ben-Hur was made, it wasn't only the epic sets (it was the largest ever made) that made waves, but the story line, the scripting, the twist and turn, and the suspense, that grabbed the attention of the audience

I'm sure there used to be a lot of dreck made in the past too, though perhaps not as much because of the higher costs back then, but you have to bear in mind that the reason you saw Ben Hur (or remember it; I'm not going to guess your age) is that it's good.

I expect there were a fair few terrible films made back then too, but no-one is still showing them.

    tl;dr Selection bias.
