(For reference, I remember being an actual Apple Developer, and receiving the monthly CDROMs with amusing titles)
And I remember ars before the op-ed ramblings on copyright and the video game reviews. You can't go back, so we just have the Old Geezer meeting on the second Saturday of every month. Newcomers are not welcome.
Regardless of whether or not it is printed on paper or simply stored as magnetic bits, should not the authors of such works be rewarded for their efforts?
Yes, if they insist. The question as I see it is why, when the web has made collaborative writing and self-publishing so easy, are students still using textbooks written for profit instead of altruism? Surely there is an abundance of talented and respected academics willing to write for the greater good?
Oh man, that would mean all those "how many ___ does it take to screw in a lightbulb" jokes will be outdated.
Times change. The jokes will just mutate into something like "how many times does a gene sculptor have to turn a USB plug around before shle can get it in?"

Put beavis and butthead in it's place that show needs to come back.
It did back in 2011, but quietly died again shortly afterwards.
The anode is the side current flows into, not necessarily the negative one. From wiki:
In a discharging battery or galvanic cell (diagram at right), the anode is the negative terminal because it is where the current flows into "the device" (i.e. the battery cell). This inward current is carried externally by electrons moving outwards, negative charge moving one way constituting positive current flowing the other way.
In a recharging battery, or an electrolytic cell, the anode is the positive terminal, which receives current from an external generator. The current through a recharging battery is opposite to the direction of current during discharge; in other words, the electrode which was the cathode during battery discharge becomes the anode while the battery is recharging.
Motion tracking seems excessive when the poster would be satisfied with a simple pulse. I would suggest an accelerometer mounted to baton/conductor and a rumble motor ripped from an old gamepad for the singer (or an earpiece).
For a no-tech alternative try having the singer sit/stand near the conductor and have the latter tap their feet (hard) along with the baton.
What you describe are homonyms, not really what the parent was referring to. It would be more accurate to say that we have different words such as "bear", "withstand", "tolerate" etc. I still disagree with the notion that modern languages aren't as rich and nuanced as their ancient precursors; in fact, I'm inclined to think that the opposite may be true as more time has passed for neologisms to be created. For example, I doubt that ancient Greeks had a word equivalent to "serendipity", not when they supposedly hadn't even got round to making the distinction between blue and bronze (to be taken in jest).
It's worth mentioning that women bishops were voted against not by the ordained ministers, but by the laity, who are essentially just trumped-up churchgoers.
Hollywood is indeed in decline - back in the days when Ben-Hur was made, it wasn't only the epic sets (it was the largest ever made) that made waves, but the story line, the scripting, the twist and turn, and the suspense, that grabbed the attention of the audience
I'm sure there used to be a lot of dreck made in the past too, though perhaps not as much because of the higher costs back then, but you have to bear in mind that the reason you saw Ben Hur (or remember it; I'm not going to guess your age) is that it's good.
I expect there were a fair few terrible films made back then too, but no-one is still showing them.
I'm really not interested in opinion pieces (especially ones that ramble on as much as this one) and would like to filter them off my front page.

To this day I'm still sure that Dot from Eastenders is secretly Albert Steptoe in drag.
Fuck you, sourpuss, I like laughing.
Then why do you watch Big Bang Theory?

For good reason - did you ever make the mistake of watching any of the new episodes?
Not twice. Instead I just started re-watching old King of the Hill, starting with King of the Ant Hill.

Here
The money shot starts at 2:50 and lasts all of 7 seconds.
I've been let down by sci-fi. In a Star Trek:Enterprise...
Well, there's your problem right there.

Remember when...
No, not really, the only Swede I can think of at the moment (besides the members of ABBA) is Alfred Nobel.
I can't speak for the parent, but no, although I do only have a GigE router.
Enjoy the first post feature while it lasts, it'll be gone in your next mandatory router update.
...although Safari's integration of the address and search bars is really pissing me off...
This alone is why I'm still using 5.whatever. Is there no way to downgrade from 6, or install 5 alongside it?
It happened with Doom 3 too, though as memory serves ATI got the blame for the leak.
the cognitive dissonance here is astounding. Ayn Rand herself, blessings upon her name, wrote TANSTAAFL .
Wasn't that Heinlein?
Hah! People were always telling me to RTFA!
I sure showed them!
Thanks. Re your sig, guess which one I am.

Ah, Ars. People who complain about /. going downhill just need to look at what happened there to be truly grateful for what we still have here.

Anglicans (basically Catholics minus the Pope and the homophobia)
Women priests (well, vicars) too. Woe betide them if they want to get uppity and become bishops though!
Anglican clergy can also marry people other than God.

tl;dr Selection bias.
