I know I'm jumping into the fray a wee late on this but I noticed that no one has mentioned this tool yet (or I missed it). I have a folder on my USB flashdrive full of floppy images for everything from boot disks to utilities to BIOS updates. Very handy. I only have to carry one or two floppies in the event of an incident. I also carry this on CD for those pesky non-USB-loving machines out there...
This sounds like a program I ran across a few years ago. I just googled them again and found they are still in business. They are pushing the same idea, and have been for years now...
"But how do you share this information (e.g. calendard information) with a 3rd party application that you trust?"
All of yahoo's services are compatible with intellisync technology. They have an app that allows you to synch to a palm pilot or a phone or whatever. Also, their premium email service (10 bucks a year) is POP3.
"Or how do you grant access to some pieces of your profile to your family members?"
The calendar and briefcase both allow you to make your data public (if you choose it on a case by case basis). Also, using a yahoo club can be a very good way to share info with family members. It has its own seperate chat room, mailing list, calendar, etc...
I know it may not be the most secure thing in the world, but it's very handy for everything I need it to do. Email, bookmarks, notepad, calendar, reminders, addresses, palm pilot synchronization, and a customized homepage with quick access to local information (wherever 'local' happens to be).
Since I use at least five different machines during the course of the day, it's extremely useful for me. When I get to a new machine, I have instant access to pretty much anything I could need. Also with a bit of ad-blocking, pop-up killing, and (assuming a wintel machine) the addition of the yahoo and google toolbars, I can have full functionality on any PC I sit down to in no time flat.
Again, not a solution for the paranoid, but I find its the most robust solution out there.
YMMV...
"Can XP run Rainbow 6? I know 2K couldn't, but I don't exactly care either. 2K suits me quite well. I have a Raid array on my home system, and from all reports, XP doesn't get much of a speed benefit from having one, whereas 2K actually takes more advantage of it."
XP Pro (thanks to compatibility mode) can run pretty much anything that has ever come out for use on Windows boxen (probably with exceptions but I haven't run into any except older games that use VESA video drivers).
As for performance, once you edit the registry in three or four places, edit the sysoc.inf file so you can remove annoying components, and shut off all the bells and whistles, I've found it to be more stable than 2K and much better for gaming. Of course the stability won't match a *nix machine, but for MS it's not too shabby.
I'd post it's uptime but I have to reboot now to install the patch of the day...
If you are in a situation where you need a cheap solution (relatively), get a PC, drop a 120GB hard drive into it, and use Symantec Ghost (or something similar) to make a backup of users entire hard drives via the network. Then you would just need to back up the one PC. You would need to work out a schedule (ghost on fridays, tape backup once/month, etc), but it might be workable if you're on a budget...

Seriously though, I haven't seen an ad on slashdot in two years thanks to filters (and I'm sure almost everyone who reads/. is in the same boat). Paying for it would be ridiculous, especially since most of the stories are posted by us, the users, anyway.
Regardless, I would never pay to join a club that would have me as a member...
OK, it's official. We need a moderation for +1, Frightening...

So vampires are made out of nanotubes?
Weird.
Who knew that Buffy has been fighting the mechanoid menace all these years and not some pesky undead...

I can't decide which is worse. The fact that this thread happened, or that I want to add lyrics to it...
they add the .mil to it?

MSnbc are we missing here? Is this really a surprise article considering the source?
