For a PDA. Why does WinCE ship with any ports open at all? What possible services should it offer in an out-of-the-box, no-user-input-required configuration? Look at OSX, no ports open by default. Look at any decent Linux distro - the daemons listen on localhost only. When will MS change their tune, or are they operating under the 'no such thing as bad publicity' theory?
So I can run 32bit compile-as-you-go-and-fight-dependencies Linux, or 64bit it-just-works OSX? Wow, I mean, choice is good, but I had no idea it would be this good. This isn't meant as a flame, but why would you run Linux on the machine instead of OSX? Is there some Linux threading thing that your app neads? Some Linux app that you wrote needs a POSIXism the way Linux implements it instead of the way BSD does? Why reinvent the wheel (poorly)?
Suck it up, drop back to 53K and learn to use Lynx, pine and trn. The time is approaching when the Intarweb is going to be useless for us slashdotters anyway, so you can be cutting edge by going CLI.
This is like the people who, when you tell them that they need a new head gasket or valve seals, ask "Isn't there some stuff that I can put in my gas to fix it?" Of course the answer is yes, for $19.99, you can buy a bottle of stuff that will save you a $1000 repair bill. Or not. People are going to claim that "you can edit your 1337.ini file and set suck=no under the [R0XoR5] heading, and get a 11.1% FPS difference, d00d!" This is great for the tinfoil hat crowd, that MS, Intel and Madonna are part of a sinister cabal to put you on an upgrade treadmill. It's also great for the Uncle Joe 6Pack crowd, people who typically "know about computers" and have loud opinions on that great free HP printer they got when they signed up for MSN. There's no magic bullet.

Read the Otherland series if you want a good, future, dystopian society where everyone has a direct connection to the Net. Extremely deep and broad world, where heroes find out that in RL they're young, old, opposite gender, etc. I'm not saying that this new book isn't good, but this stuff has been explored already, in depth, by masters (Neuromancer anyone?)
So what you're saying is that you don't know, but you're using Hume's wrecking ball to say that because you don't know that there is a problem, that nobody can say that there ISNT one. Bah, how does this stuff get modded up?
I had a class in school that discussed implants in the larger veins, for instance the legs, that would boost blood flow back up to the heart in high-G situations. The idea was to use a low RPM turbine, driven through an inductive loop in the flight suit, to increase blood pressure. The other idea was to use a magneto-hydrodynamic "Red October" style of assist, but there was debate about running that much electrical field through the body/conductive liquid (blood). I for one, would welcome our new Turbocharged Circulatory Overlords.
You gloss over, with a sweep of your clueless wand, the rest of us who rely on the Internet for things like SMTP, SSH, Muds, Usenet, IM and VPNs. Please don't assume that my Internet is the same as your Intarweb.
How is universal broadband access a panacea for anything, other than your pr0n habit? Does low-ping-time Counterstrike imply a superior culture? Does the type of Internet access that you have really matter? All these questions, and more, are germane if you're an AC propeller-head.
To the rest of the world, the more important questions are things like: How does the existence of a wealthy, benevolent trading partner improve the economy of a small, threatened-on-nearly-all-sides country? How is the cultural work ethic shaped by having a million-man army of starving Communists sitting on your doorstep? What chilling effect on society stems from large levels of government interference and encroachment on personal liberty?
The only things which serve humanity are aliens. To say that science has such a purpose places scientists, who are the best and brightest, in the position of slaves. Worse, it enslaves them to the worst and most ignorant - the degree of their evil or ignorance dictates how much moral claim they can place on the scientists. It reminds me of a quote "You have the privilege of strength, but I have the right of weakness!"
Disgusting. Your Nickname says it all. My only hope is that after I'm long dead, you inherit the world that you're advocating.
The idea of spreading viruses via Sybian seems far more sinister, and far nastier. All things considered, it was only a matter of time before the Sybian was used as an infection vector.
Talk to all the Canadians who pay for American Blue Cross. I've lived in a socialist country (Scotland), and the medical system was crap. I knew a guy with an ingrown toenail, who even played minor league soccer, who had to wait 3 _YEARS_ for an operation, because people with more serious issues kept getting bumped ahead of him. Fuck that.
No, the stories in the local paper are relevant because, get this, they're local stories. Local tax issues, local housing issues, local economy issues, local politics issues. Why do I care about Hillary Clinton? Why do I care about The Village? Why do I care about whoever-replaced-Juliani ?
Relevance is a highly subjective term. If you're a typical outspoken, liberal New Yorker, then its your Bible. If you live in a cabin in Montana, you probably don't give a shit. Calling something 'relevant' indicates much about the person doing the calling, as much or more than it tells anything about the item being discussed. Personally, I think its a rag. It's old, its big, its supposedly a "standard", but no more relevant than my local paper. And probably LESS relevant than the sum total of whats available online - BBC, London Times, Die Zeit, Drudge, CNN.com, english.aljazeera.net, etc. etc.
Since when does anyone take orders from Unicef, or the UN for that matter? This is like saying that because the Communist Party dictates that all property is theft, we're suddenly all criminals. When a legislative & judicial body, to whom I've given sanction, pronounces something, then its "law", anything else is lies and balderdash, and I'm happy to have no part of it.

Basicly we don't know enuf Ah, thank you Mr. Hume, for destroying philosophy, and thank you modern education, for destroying poor Grimace1975's ability to spell. Just because you do not know, doesn't cast doubt on the validity of the science behind this. It just means that YOU'RE ignorant.
does NOT corrupt absolutely; absolute power attracts the corrupt. No matter how "benevolent" a dictator, it is immoral to coerce men to act against their will. Only someone corrupt would WANT absolute power; viz. every president since, oh, 1792.
I have aluminum siding, you insensitive clod!
