Once the beans hear of what can happen to them, Ol' Juan is going to have a strike on his hands!
That is true. It is a package deal, but just because when you are shopping for a car, and they show you the super-duper deluxe car with AWD, ABS, quad-Airbags, AM/FM/Tape/CD/8-Track/CB radio, AC and best of all, those mirrors on the back of the sun visors, doesn't mean you can't ge the same model without the really cool radio/cd player. "Gee, Mr. Salesman, I really like it, but I don't want a radio in it." Guess what...it may mean you can't drive off the lot today, but you can get a car without the radio. I use the Radio, because the OS is installed on a HDD, and they all come form the Manufacturer sans-OS. What does that mean for Dell? Joe Tech has to go get a non-OS'd HDD and plug it into the Laptop.
Nope. I use both a hotmail and a yahoo email account. I have set Hotmail to place only email from those in my address book/safe list into my inbox, and I have set all other mail (ie junk mail) to be instanly deleted. I get about 3 emails a week from lists I am on, that is it.
The way I see it. If I don't know you, or I have not emailed you requesting correspondance, I don't need to hear from you. If I've met you online via IRC, I 'know' you. I also ask what email address the person will be sending from so I can add them to the 'in' list.
As far as web based mail goes, I hate to say it, but Microsoft has it going on. I don't know of any other web email that will let me send anything labeled 'junk' to/dev/null. Yahoo doesn't let me do it, and I get about 20 emails of spam a day, and one or 2 actaully make it into my inbox rather than the junk folder.
Government's do not scrap entire fleets when a new technology improves over what is in existance, they strat building new ships and as the older, obsolete ships either sink, are lost in battle, or are too old to maintain they are replaced.
There is some old technology out there, and anyone seeking a bailout on that should be denied. Airlines should be denied bailouts, unless the money is used to go toward improved tech. The $100,000 switch of yesteryear can be replaced with a more relaible $25,000 switch that can handle more traffic, then that is what the money should go for -- improvements.
If their business model is failing, many airlines are in this boat only because of the lessed travel, then they need to adjust..close hubs, discontinue routes, etc. Yes, it would suck for the people that are affected, but what is to stop them from forming a local company to fill the void? It may be too expensive to run a daily flight from Los Angeles to San Francisco for a major airline using a big jet, because there are only 30 people wanting to go each day on average, but a smaller company with a 10 passenger leer could make 3 trips a day, and probably be very profitable.
Government should seek to involve itself in National Defense and Policies, and Proteciton of the Populace -- everything else should be a local matter.
this will open up the door for the independent film makers that have new ideas that the studios think 'won't sell'. Scripts in Hollywood take years and multiple re-writes before a studio is happy.
Other than big budget special effects, that I want to see on the big screen, I don't go to the theaters. There isn't any content that hasn't been done before and Hollywood *always* trashes the original basis for the movie.
Peter Parker did *not* abandon Mary Jane...of course he originally snapped her neck trying to save her when she was tossed off the bridge, too.
That would require the weapon. That comes back to the question of collectors. What if they are just wanting it to be part of the collection. Yes, I have the Sig P226 with all 3 barrel configurations. Very rare since they dropped.357 support in 2005 (just an example, no insider information that Sig Arms will do this in 2005, but remember you read it here first, if they do:) ). Collectors already pay a premium licensing fee and can obtain actual working military weapons (to a degree) that are fully automatic. They generally don't fire these weapons -- for reasons that belted ammo for an M-60 machine gun is expensive and doing weekend recreational shooting with a weapon that fires 300 rounds a minute gets expensive.
There is some good in this, as in all databases that are intended to help track/solve criminal cases. As there are records that police and investigators can search to give them a list of all known criminals with an MO (Modus Operendi) of X. They can narrow down the investigation by searching and finding out who is still in jail, who is dead and who has moved elsewhere (doesn't mean they are guilty/innocent, just not a good suspect). A database of all spent cartridges would go along these lines of helping narrow the search. While the barrels may deteriorate over time and use, the rifling patterns of X groves with Y twists will remain the same -- changing the barrel of a 9mm Glock with another barrel will still get you the same X and Ys, just more defined in a new barrel.
Where does the Bad come in? Well, from personal experience, I bought a used hand gun from A&P arms in Virgina years ago. Recently, I had a phone call from a Virginia Beach police officer investigating a robbery and looking for a gun -- the federal registry said that I had the gun (they only had a partial serial, but insisted I was the only gun) and I had not lived in Virgina for over 5 years. Luckily, I was able to provide him the name of the dealer I sold the gun to. Also, luckily, he was a polite individual and knew that the system was giving him information that could not be true, but he had to follow the lead as my serial number was a partial match. If this system is implemented, then it should be used to check used weapons when they are sold/changed ownership. There are many ads in trade papers for weapons, and I would not be against a requirement that a ballistics check be made before I purchased it. This is akin to a background check on potential buyers of guns, and since all a criminal has to do, is pick up the local classifeds/trade magazine -- there is no US law that states that an individual has to perform a background check on someone prior to selling them a personal weapon.
The Ugly? Well, if you check out many guns, they now come with multiple caliber barrels for the same frame. Buy a 9mm over the counter, register it, and have it entered into the ballistic database. Go to a gun show, purchase a.40 cal conversion kit and use it to commit the crime. Reinstall the original 9mm kit and ditch the.40 cal kit. As the kit is not a working firearm, there is not a legal requirement to keep a record of the individual purchasing the kit. Pay cash and there is a dead in trail. When the police come because you are a close match to the person on the video or eyewitness description, you can safely produce you legally owned 9mm and they get a dead end.
Where this database will come in handy, is all the firearms in police impound. There are numerous weapons that never make it to melt down, and those criminals (and maybe the officer) that has it may not consider changing the identifying items..barrel and firing pin.
Criminals will always have the means to obtain a gun, and as long as I have the right to carry mine, I'm not worried.
The best defense against a tyrranical governement, is a well armed populace.
The law defines "Commercial Electronic Mail" as having the principal..not *sole* purpose. Since a politician 'serves' the public, they are offering services in a sense.
Even non-profit groups offer a service when you get down to it. Service can be as little as donate '$10.00' to help keep the trails clean, to donate to help plant a tree, or help the local keep-alive shelters for animals.
I view any unsolicited email as spam. Unfortunately my friends sometimes send me 'spam' in that regards, but with as few friends as I have, the one or 2 'junk' mails a day doesn't compare to the number of male/female enhancement/enlargement offers, insta-weightloss, or get-rich-quick offers.
If the politician wins, then this will open the door for every 'non-profit' group to spam, and all it will take, is to set up a dummy non-profit company and spam for donations.

If you are such a privacy nut, then please, mark your vehicles with big stickers, "Not Equipped with Tracking Device" so those car-jackers and bankrobbers will take your car, and help the insurnace rates on my OnStar equipped vehicle go down even further.
I just hope the bastards don't get off on some technicality about them being tracked with OnStar, an 'invasion of privacy'.
I see a lot of comments about how individuals will still be around in the future to set up desktops or locate power buttons, etc. Well, this article didn't say those jobs were targetd for 'obsoletion', just the system administrator job. Look at this from the suits view:
1 Help Desk person $25K/yr* 1 System Admin $50K/yr*
*these numbers are based on the salary levels for the State I work for.
For the price system admin I can have 2 help desk people to field all the calls and set up desktops, and if there is a problem, I've got the power/knowledge of Big Vendor to rely on.
Its all about trimming budgets and pocketing bonuses.
Neither of us were, there, so we only have what has ben reported to go by. Now, if you were sitting somewhere -- bus, train, Denny's -- and you overheard someone say "I'm gonna go out and kill [insert group here]." You now have a choice. Ignore it, and then live with the choice if someone from [group] was killed; or report it as this lady did. One action will certainly save a life, the other is a 50/50 shot. If you are the target, I should hope that someone errs on the side of caution for you. If not, we will all get to see your face on the news along with the person that heard the threat as your relatives ask why it wasn't reported.
Perhaps it was only someone blowing off some steam and didn't really mean it or intend to follow through with it. In today's US culture, yes Arab-looking individuals bear closer scrutiny in regards to certain actions due to the actions of a radical few. Thanks to the actions of a few, whites are labled as racist, blacks as common criminals, hispanics as illegals and now, rather than the 'rich oil magnates' Arabs are attached to terrorists.
Where does this leave us? The actions of the terrorists are meant to whittle away our freedoms, and bring fear into the country. We have a choice, report suspicious behaviour or ignore it and hope that it really is nothing to worry about. All TIPS does, is provide a means to report suspoicous activity, and I would think that "If they were saddened by 9/11, wait until 9/13" would certianly set off some alarm bells for you.
The land of the free does not come without it price: The price of blood to establish it and keep it against foreign aggressors, the price of eternal vigilance to be ready for an agressor, and lastly, the price of *RESPONSIBILITY*. Yes, responsibility is a price. You are responsible for you actions, and that means that you can not say and do what ever you feel like.
These men were irresponsible in that they were acting like they were knowledgable of some event that is about to happen. They got what they deserved. They did not lose their jobs, they were on their way to do residency and they have been placed into a different hospital, hopefully a little wiser.
I sent this site over to a friend of mine at the Southern Poverty Law Center. They have an Intelligence Project that monitors Hate groups and Hate sites on the internet. I am still waiting on a reply, but for those wanting to know how to define 'hate' -- at least in the legal sense -- and free speech, this is the site to learn from.
Its really hard to see all the logos on cars going 180+ MPH. What is the car and who is the driver? I'll also ask you to define "Fairly Cheap", someone already has, but if you see it here first...
Keyboards, Mice and Joysticks, while good hardware, do not carry personal information that could be intercepted. Yes, programs on computers can trap those inputs, but a Logitech or Belkin keyboard is subject to the same programs.
I am not about to let Microsoft carry any of my wireless traffic. When they can patch the OS as fast as an OSS bug, then maybe I will consider it. The last thing I would need, is some announcement "Microsoft's Wireless Hardware vulnerable to [insert vulnerability here]." Six months later, I've still got the same vulnerability because its in the firmware, and they didn't allow for it to be upgraded or patched.
It is only a matter of time before some student, hyped up with "freedom of speech" or a feeling of "1337|\|3$$" sues the school teacher, the school itself and takes on the school board.
Look for this lawsuit to come out of California, or any other location where students have sued over failing grades and actually having to put their brains through the mental hurdles to actually develop a true thought process.
If Engilsh or [insert Native language here] is being taught, then any use of "1337" speak should result in a failing grade on the paper with a requirement to redo the assignment. A talk with the parents might also be in order, but if bringing home an "F" doesn't clue the Parental Units in, then a conference certainly won't. All Parental Units support their children, and in today's litigious society, calling a parent-teacher conference is really just begging for a lawsuit.
Well, according to this article:
http://www.ecommercetimes.com/perl/story/19188.htm l The two corporate keys released have been specifically targeted. I am glad that my office has an MSDN subscription that I was able to use to install XP at home. All in all, this is just an annoyance, as an attempt to install SP1 on a 'hacked' copy will not break the computer/format C:, but will deny updates from this point on. The corporate keys that were leaked were replaced with legitimate keys, because at least one, was from an actual corporate license and not just some typical generic windows key like under 95 where the serial 111-1234567890 was a vaild key, and office was all 1's.
I work in the public sector, specifically for a state agency. I am not a contractor. I am paid salary, and that salary is lower than I was making in my $45,000/yr contract job, but:
1) I don't have to worry about a contract 'suddenly' ending without notice. 2) Being currently single, all of my health benefits (medical/dental/vision) are paid for -- I only have small co-pays if I go to a doctor and I get 2 free dental cleanings a year. 3) Depending on the department, you may or may not get a raise at all. In this department, I can expect an annual raise on top of a ACOL of about 5%. Not much, but it does add up. 4) I am not able to be laid off or dismissed without documented reasoning once I am off probation. The saying that it is difficult to fire a state/federal employee is true. 5) I am in a shop where I am the lead/only developer for their intranet, so I have free reign to schedule meetings, code and design as I would have in the private sector. 6) The only downside, is I am not able to tele-commute at all.
I just started less than 6 months ago, and I am looking at a minimum pay raise in the next 30 days of $1000.00, and another pay raise 90 days after that that will be between $2 - 3,000.00. After that, its annual raises and cost of living increases, but the annual step increases are between 2 and 3K a year on top of the cost of living bump.
I would seriously look at public service, if ou don't have to actually deal with the public.
Well, it seems that this is going to go state by state and Michigan residents are out of luck with the denial of their lawsuit. Who will really benefit, will be any lawyer that is licensed in multiple states to practice. All the groundwork will be done after one case. Just copy and paste into new documents and change the names of the 'innocent'. Unfortunately, Microsoft won't even be a loser at all, regardless of how many states allow the class-actions to continue.
Maybe the EFF should get involved. If any lawyer from them collects big fees, they could put much of it into funding the fight against *AA/DCMA.
I am not sure what the age of majority is in Norway, but they should still persecute (intentional choice of words) Jon under the laws applicable to the age he was.
What would happen if we waited until a juvenile turned to an adult before we charged them whith a a crime? The whole point of juvenile laws is to punish those caught and hopefully rehabilitate them before they become an adult and commit more crime. Also, a juvenile is more likely to get probation for an offense that would put an adult behind bars. Again, this is to show some compassion to the developing mind and hopefully put them back on the track for decent citizenship.
If they are using this process, they should be severly punished. What did that poor coffee bean do to deserve to have it's precious and life giving caffiene chemically scrubbed away? If God has intended for coffee to be caffiene free, He would have made it that way.

Ok, I missed the edit, beef farmers to shorten the time ot market for beef..cattle farmers don't raise chickens unless they want fresh eggs.
Dairy farmers have been giving hormones to dairy cows to produce more milk, and beef farmers have been giving to shorten the time to market for poultry. What we see as a result, are more and more children reaching puberty at younger ages and appearing older than they are...yes there is some creedence to the old joke "Your Honor, she looked eighteen!" Will a tearless onion mean we will eventually loose the ability to tear ourselves? I doubt it, but what ever change they make in the onion will eventually make a change in us.

Girlfriend? What's that? That a new product from Microsoft? What are its features?
Well, it seems that this is going to go state by state and Michigan residents are out of luck with the denial of their lawsuit. Who will really benefit, will be any lawyer that is licensed in multiple states to practice. All the groundwork will be done after one case. Just copy and paste into new documents and change the names of the 'innocent'. Unfortunately, Microsoft won't even be a loser at all, regardless of how many states allow the class-actions to continue.
Maybe the EFF should get involved. If any lawyer from them collects big fees, they could put much of it into funding the fight against *AA/DCMA.
I can see one of the defendant's aruments now.
Your Honor, I would like to bring your attendtion to Defense Exibit A. This will be shown right after we return from a word with our Sponsors.

Defendant #1: And now to Exhibit B. Oh, you missed A? Maybe we shouls rewind..but that would not be allowed if the ReplayTV has their way...
