ever since Star Wars, ALL movie which may appeal to children are about merchandising. The money involved is insane, and its all profit for the rights owners. No paying any silly actors for their work.
The main characters in Sneakers were adults, the main character in wargames was a mysanthropic teen male. Guess which one most people on slashdot identified with when they saw it (assuming the proper age range).
For a lot of people the sporting events are the key. If I could stream sporting event (even if I paid for them individually in a pay per view model) for Blackhawks games and Bear games I would drop my sat provider in a Chicago minute (which is slightly less hectic and less rude than a New York minute)
you assume the masses ever used their time wisely. Before TV it was radio, before radio it was vaudville, before vaudville people went to bed @ 7 or 8 due to lack of lighting, but when they did focus on entertainment it was opera or plays (Shakespere's comedies anyone?).
The fact is that throughout human history, the educated have been in the vast minority, and the rest of humanity has been dragged up from out caveman roots by a small % of the population. Why would that change now?
If you placed sevral of these in a stadium with high end figial camers you could emulate a full #D experience. Sure you could hife spots if you wished, but for enterprainment and mapping it would be pretty awesome. Of course the software would have to be able to handle the input from multiple locations and corrlate the data between them, but syill yjay would be amazing.
If the English had not been focused on France at the time they woul dhave kicked the crap out of the colonies. As it was they almost beat us with a small % of their Army.
The fact is that a country who is willing to supress the populaiton brutally and has a large military edge can overcome pretty much any obstacle a bunch of farmers might provice. Dont believe the movies.
While no direct 'gay gene has been found, there have been studies which have shown a biological element to be gay. Nothing is conclusive of course, but it is at least worth consideration.
I used to think this. Upon further consideration I changed my mind. Just because this is how thing have been done in the past, why does it have to be done this way now? Why can't we have diplomacy without back room deals? Why cant peoples REAL opinions be exposed and known.
I think if there was more honesty in the world things would be better. Maybe not easier, but better.
Every country spins news for its own self interest. Every country is selfish. That is because countries are run by and represents humans...and humans are selfish and look out for their own self interest.
Hypocracy is part of being human. We can try to minimize it in ourselves, but the larger the group the harder it becomes.
That depends on how many are starving and how many are dead. Are 15k lives worth 15k people starving? 150k? 150 million?
As much as people hate to do it, there IS a value to human live. We just have to be honest and objective in assigning that value. For instance I think my sons life is worth pretty much the rest of you living like shit forever. But I dont claim to be objective about that.
I am not saying the killing of civillians is not a bad thing. What I am saying is that if the bank really do pull down the economy like the GP posted (I am skeptical of this) then yes, it is worse than 15k lives.
We had a Republican administration form 2000-2008 and they did not want it.
Before then Net Neutrality was not really even an issue here on slashdot much less in Washington.
As for government intervention, I agree with you about it to an extent. The problem is that we already regulate utilities (and I believe ISP's are quickly becoming a utility) because it is unreasonable to expect the market to be able to handle multiple competitors with the huge infrastructure costs as a barrier to entry.
Spoken like someone who has never had to deal with European (and French and German and Italian) privacy laws. to say it is a PITA is an understatement of gigantic proportions.
That having been said, i am guessing that many online vendors have contingencies for this exact issue. (server hosted in the EU or country in quesiton. It would still be a pain, but less than you might think.
you are mistaken. Wikileaks could easily filter information to further any agenda it sees fit. Assange has shown that he is NOT impartial and strongly opposes many of the Us governments policies. Which is part of the concern many people here have with them currently.
By taking sides you introduce the oppurtunity for your opponents to label you as having an agenda. And frankly they might be right. Look up some of my old posts, I had concerns about this months ago. Long before the media started spouting off about W-L.
I dont know if W-L is a problem, but Assange has hurt their credibility.
I agree with almost everything you said. the one point that confused me is the child support thing. wouldnt the father be responsible for child support either way. How is it relevant.
Comcast has a right to decide what goes on their network (at least where I live sinc I have a vendor choice), but if they do I will end my relationship with them faster than you can say net neutrality.
I am hesitant to switch due to being uncertain about the signal of a WiMax to my house (in chicago but an old buildiing), but I was close to swapping before due to the flexibility of WiMax, and if they cut off netflix I would drop them in the 2-3 hours it would take me to go to the CLEAR store near me, buy a modem, set it up and get the signal working well.
Well, you can't change the perception of the image, precisely because it is banned almost everywhere!
You are wrong. You and I can't change that perception, but it will change. Probably over the course of the next 100-1000 years it will lose some of its wrongness. At that point it may or may not be picked up as a symbol for another cause. That cause may be good or evil or neither or both. But time does heal all wounds. Given some value of time.
We give symbols power. This is fact. It is how human minds work. To deny this is to deny being human. And if you acknowledge this then you must decide if this symbol's power is based primarily upon the storied history or it's recent use. For the vast majority of people it is a symbol equated with evil.
I am not saying we should ban the symbol as in Europe. But to ignore its predominantly interpreted meaning is to do a disservice to those who fought against that banner. And it is perfectly reasonable for XBox Live to exclude it.
Generally I agree with you. However, a small UAV with a range of say.....500 meters would be all you need to smuggle across the border from Mexico to California in the urban areas.
The thing about that is that the payload is WAY too small for what they want to do.
"George Washington is said to have told Jefferson that the framers had created the Senate to "cool" House legislation just as a saucer was used to cool hot tea. "
about 50% of the Us population lives in the burbs (per census). Only 19% of Americans live in in rural areas. That means the 'cityville people equate to ~ 1/3 of the country. 100 million people. That is a huge market. That market alone could sustain electric vehicle production and R&D until you get more infrastructure and longer range.
Believe it or not suburbanites are NOT the center of the universe.

Thank you for your efforts.

why didnt they do this before? Simple.

I canonly speak for myself as a comcast customer.

so a 14 year old who still thinks leet speak is cool took out wikileaks website? Really?
So who OTHER than the US government could be responsible for the attack?
If you have a gap in your resume, you are not working hard enough
1) Training (formal and informal)
2) Open Source projects
3) Volunteer work
etc
There is plenty you can do to keep you resume full while out of work.

wish I had some mod points. Well put

yes that is a completely different set of nutcases.
