Switzerland and Spain are doing great with OSS in government. What makes linux a bad match for the German Foreign Office? Or what are they doing wrong?
This is impressive bit of tech. Robotic vision has historically been a tough field. Anyone knowledgeable enough on the subject to speculate on the implications or interesting uses of this technology?
http://www.okawix.com/ Very easy way to get it on your machine. It is much more complicated (and wayyyy larger) if you want images and other multimedia too.
Not that learning does not go on, just that most people use it to get a degree to get a job. This current trend is historically unusual, it used to be that most people who went to college would go to be cultured and educated. That was when learning resources were more difficult to acquire than they are now. Now there is a wealth of information on every subject that makes independent study as feasible as college, as projects like khan university and this show.
It would be great, except that for quite a while now college has not been the best way to learn, it is about getting a proof of effort. It will take a long time for a wiki-style university to be widely accredited.
This journalist will be alright. Nothing gets the government scared like a big steam of bad press (which the internet is more than willing to provide). Now is a great time to be living. Despite all of the bad news about orwellian government in the UK, not even they can get away with harassing citizens in the age of the internet.
It is more like you were hired to analyze data; and you wrote the program to help you do your job.It is your program to do with as you please. The only thing the company wanted was for its data to be analyzed.
The Barracuda XT is a spinning platter HDD and so should not be expected to benefit significantly from the new SATA revision. SSDs on the other hand have already maxed out the transfer rate SATA 3Gbps. I suspect they would have seen the difference if they used a top of the line SSD.
This is good news all around, it's great to see things getting faster.
I have two 2048x1536 20 inch CRTs on my desk right now. You can get them dirt cheap ($100) if you look around. Even with their age, size, and proximity to each other the only real problem I've had is a bit of a convergence issue; usually nothing you can't fix with in a weekend with a little tinkering. For quality a good CRT is still the way to go, at least until SED and FED displays hit the market.
Here's the great part, fossil fuel based power plants can be much more efficient than cars because they can run hotter and don't have to worry about the safety of having extreme pressures within a meter of the drivers. I haven't dug up the numbers but the potential is there.
That sounds a lot like Manna. <URL:http://marshallbrain.com/manna1.htm> Highly recommended. It was written by the guy behind howstuffworks.com and it's a short read for a novel.
Capcom announces unsellable game.

The f-117 is a fighter in name only; it was designed for a ground-attack role.

You only need a few gigabytes of space to install a local copy of wikipedia's text.

not-so-exciting ... dinosaur geneticist
Does not compute.

Yup, can't stop the signal and all that.
Companies get their panties in a bunch. We laugh at them. Film at 11.
The film has multiple (8-10) tracks per roll. This would account for the 20 hours of audio recovered.
It's sad to see it go. The show that helped so many of the musicians that geeks love make it big.
How will we get our entertainment in the future? I think the net will let shows like Dr. Demento thrive.
This shows that the giving freedom to your customers can work. It is a momentous slap in the face to the big boys like EA and ilk.

They're called asexuals. http://www.asexuality.org/home/
Mod parent up. This is a very good point.
If you try hard enough down also works. *ducks*

I would break out my old copy of C&C generals, but I run linux now.
