whenever we read news about "the industry said this or that", who are they talking about? I am in the industry and no-one ever consulted me about anything? not that I'd expect a terrorist government like ours to care what it's citizens think.
that is correct, we (the general public) have NO fair use rights as far as recording most tv programs off tv for later viewing to copying our own bought CD for listening on an mp3 player. when police start aresting themselves for timeshifting and using their mp3 players, perhaps we should take ALL laws in this country seriously - after all, if one law is not worth following, surely none are right?
"Yes, it may be wrong. Yes, it may be stealing. Yes, it will put people out of work. The sad fact, however, is that these points are irrelevant in the face of the simple truth that it can not and will not be stopped. "
No, only if it is in a country that considers it wrong or stealing. You can't assume all countries (or even planets?) have the same morals as yours.
out of curiosity after reading slashdot, I thought I'd give it a go:
"Unfortunately we are unable to automatically validate your Windows installation. It appears that you are using an operating system that is not currently supported by the Windows Genuine Advantage validation process. We hope that you'll return later to retry the validation process so that you may enjoy the full benefits of genuine Microsoft software. "
Guess what? Windows ME is on the computer I tested with!
I use Windows on several systems in addition to other more reliable OSs. But, I know the problems with Windows and whatever faults Windows has, it was my choice to use it, nobody forced me and I definately wouldn't use Windows for anything critical.
Perhaps magazine reviewers and the media etc should be more honest and not one-sided in future when reviewing products (like operating systems) and advertise the facts when they crash a lot or are prone to viruses - maybe then the uneducated public can make an educated decision as to whether they want to live with the problems of a buggy virus-ridden system or not. Perhaps if most non-computer literate computer users knew they bought a faulty operating system they wouldn't keep asking stupid questions about why their system didn't work correctly (but then they sometimes cause the problems too).
sadly or luckily (depending on which way you think) Windows XP doesn't run on Pocket PCs and since Windows XP is the only version of Windows to get service packs for MSIE, I guess Windows Pocket PC edition will not.
well I guess that document's relavence depends on whether the program you write is considered intellectual property or a work of art - I'd argue both to a degree. Perhaps the only way to make it truely free is to release it off this planet so that you are not bound by some of these planet's stupid laws...
in any case, public domain might be the closest thing to free, but free in my view means it is free - ie: if you want to resell it you can, if you want to give it away you can, if you want to reprint it on wallpaper because you think it looks nice, you can.
no lawyer will stop me giving my software away free.

Open Source Licensing

I find I prefer to release my latest code as 'free'. When I mean free, it is free for whoever to do whatever they want with it - and totally free of any licence or other restrictions. I dislike everything about the idea of a licence to use software/data (sourcecode is just data to the compiler) and that's why I choose to make my things available free.
- the advertising, check out the specifications, no mention of CPU, OS or even RAM?
- system requirements? although I know what they mean, you can read these in two ways, 1) it runs from Windows XP and it needs 64meg RAM at least, or 2) you need another computer that runs Windows XP and it needs 64meg RAM at least
- unless I see one in action, I cannot verify if point 2 above is the truth or a lie. ie: my O2 XDA says it requires Windows 95, 98 or ME, but in fact it doesn't - it works 100% without as these have nothing to do with the XDA, just the crappy bundled software that you may or may not use.
oh my god, a whole $15 extra for a whole 256mb RAM, I guess I'll need a whole lot of price increases of that size before they get to the $800 I paid for 16mb once! come one, stop complaining, computers ARE CHEAP!!!
no worries, just visually write the best Linux distro around and visually write a new visual designer then you can use the new linux instead of windows to visually create other things.
1) AmigaOS does what I want the *way* I want to do it (obvisouly biased because I love the way AmigaOS does things - and still use it on a daily basis, but I also use Windoze on a daily basis and Linux probably on a weekly basis [no, I don't like the way Linux does almost anything]).
2) AmigaOS is responsive (Windoze and Linux are NOT)
3) AmigaOS (almost all versions) are better supported in some ways than Windoze & Linux (for these two OSs, new versions are needed always for new hardware support - find a new piece of hardware that works on 11yo Windoze or Linux versions)

yep, we definately have it bad over here, makes me ashamed to be in this lousy country :(

"Thouugh I'll admit it hasn't really stood the test of time."
You mean, YOU no longer thing it is as good. I assure you that it sounds the same now as it did before.
so, phones with cameras must have a flash, but cameras don't need a flash? just make a camera that *looks* like a phone.
it's only work if they make it illegal to wear bare feet and shoot you onsite to discourage breaking this law

CyberGraphX has supported many monitors for ages (early 90s'?)
just think, if US pilots had this technology now, they could increase their accuracy to about 70% and kill less civilians in IRAQ!
why try fly upwards when you could just travel to the edge of the earth because everyone knows the earth is flat right?
Does that make the XBox an Apple or a Pear?

"with the equivalent of 378 terabytes" - is that like the MPAA's equivalent?

Julian
The only sane solution is to change the meaning of byte to 10 bits (8 significant bits and 2 'leap' bits).
ie: 1 K = 10000 bits (80% of which is significant)
Do you think we can apply for a TV repairman licence even though we live in Australia? Sounds like a good deal if you ask me!
