  1. This not uncommon-even for recruiters on Internet Speed Applied to Careers · · Score: 1

Being a partner in a company that recruits Linux and networking techs, for all sorts of companies, I have seen this happen all too often in the internet/.com's. I now follow a different tack. I research any company that wants candidates from my company and try to get an idea of just how solvent and stable they are before sending people to them. I have saved myself and a number of good people alot of heartache this way! When you are dealing with people's ability to their bills, feed their kid's and survive it hits home.

  2. Welcome to "lite" software on How Will Subscription-Ware Affect OEMs? · · Score: 1

I suspect your brand new Windows box will come with a collection of "lite-ware" or "barely there ware" if you prefer. It will do very basic stuff but to get the real function's you will have to rent. An example would be an office suite that prints but does not allow you to fax.Perhaps a spread-sheet that allows limited calculations or cells.Or maybe the whole lot will be on a free trial basis and just time-out on you.

I personally believe .Net will be Ballmer's Waterloo. He & Microsoft have *grossly* over estimated the average users bandwith (no we don't all have cable, dsl or T-1's!).The downloads will be horrible in respect to time & disconnects.Hell it will make the average AOL connection look downright speedy.. ;)

On the flip side...a great day for GNU/Linux and Open Source as people flock to distro's that offer ease of install & FULL applications.

  5. Y2K was big business on Y2K Bugs: The Year In Review? · · Score: 1

At the time I worked for a major reseller of hardware & software and man it was unreal! Phones ringing off the hooks. We are not just talking some back up zip stuff and tapes but whole back up servers and systems. I saw companies spend millions in plain fear. I say fear because frankly the newer stuff could "fail" just as fast as the old when it came right down to it.

Who gained? Media for a story they could hype for a full year prior to the mostly non-event. Resellers who had a field day. IT people who saw this as a great opportunity to get new hardware on the pretense of "safety".The whole American economy from the surge of tech buying. I wonder if the current down swing in tech stocks were, in part, due to a far more cynical viewpoint after Y2K that just kept on rolling.

I have used Linux for 3 years (along with Windows and Mac's for much longer). They all can suck at times. There is NO perfect O/S.

However-that being said-Linux sucks far less. I get alot of info and questions answered with dejanews and just plain bedtime reading!Que publishes a book called Using Linux that is my bible. If you want to really learn you have to be prepared to study and read. There are no shortcuts worth taking. If that slows Linux down on the average users desktop-so be it.

Frankly I believe Linux is ready right now for the average desktop. The problem is it has to come *pre-loaded* and ready to go like Windows and Mac's.That's the kicker.Until the average user can walk into their local computer super-store and see all the dual-boot machines loaded up and ready to go it's not going to happen!Plain and simple people will use whatever O/S is on the machine.

  7. my experience.. on What are Share Options Worth? · · Score: 2

I have been with a company for 3 years.the way they work (at least here) is you have the "option" to buy x number of shares each six months at whatever the current price is.The company buys the shares and holds them. When you sell (in part or whole)the company then *deducts* the price they paid from the current market price.I get the difference. If the stock price zooms (mine did once) you can make out pretty nice.If it just limps along (our current state)you got zip. There have been times, had I sold,I would have *owed* money.Of course I don't work for a hot Linux company (alas). You have to look at the track record (if the company has one)and figure where this stock/company is heading.Today's latest and greatest can be tomorrow's Betamax :p

  9. Would we need a public satellite? on Is A Public Wireless Internet Possible? · · Score: 1

Firt off I live in what is considered a rural area of Arizona. We have your basic local ISP and one or two major pop's (MSN & AOL).The next big thing here will be "wireless" which will be signals bounced off satellite to local towers then to a small disk that will signal to a special modem much like wireless cable for TV.So far we have two companies that will duke it out on this front. All well and good.

Now for true public wireless someone has to have that satellite (or permission to use it),the towers and the hardware to get all this going.Right off the bat my cynical mind tells me this is going to cost some major investment.Of course I am only looking at the one facet of wireless that I am aware of.

We have seen that there is almost nothing truly free when it comes to the nuts and bolts of the Internet. Most free ISP's have gone down or you must pay some price (scrolling advertisements, limited access, etc).I would welcome a truly free, uncensored, open way to access the Internet and be in a really open enviroment but I simply do not see who will foot the bill.
