  1. The "Suits" are just being the morons you expected on Why are Businesses Willing to Spend More for Software? · · Score: 0

I've been running into this since I started working for IBM in 1973, let me see if I can make it clear, we have many ways of approaching a problem, we have, the easy straightforward way, we have the bass-ackwards way, and we have the bloated, convoluted, redundant way. Now the Gummermint usually chooses the latter as it makes it easier to get more money next year if you overspend this year! Very large companies have a different motive entirely, you see in BIG companies every manager is responsible for looking as important as possible so as to protect and perhaps even expand their little empire, and if you can convince the under vice presedent of brass plated widget manufacturing that your little project is really a big project then you have both increased your status and his status at the same time! So in the context of BIG companies the concept of simple and easy just don't make sense.

Not just a programmer, anyone technicial!

All the interviewers I've had the misfortune to interview with these last five months have had one thing in common, they are very uncomfortable interviewing older workers, they seem to want animated snappy youthful answers to their question, I even went to a workshop on inview tecniques, I thought the video examples they showed us were just plain stupid, the actors in the little vignettetts heads were bobbing around like some crack addicted bird, I was told by the instructor that I "had no body language" and that I should "project enthusiasm", what a bunch of BS!. It would seem that answering tecnicial questions correctly isn't enough, you have to look like you are a member of the interviewer's peer group, you know someone to have as a playmate, I didn't get a job as sysadmin at WalMart.com because the head System Administrator (a twenty year old kid) didn't like the fact that I prefer RedHat over Debian, your should have seen the look on his face when he saw me! even his Micky Mouse T-shirt got mad.

I'm sort of familiar with this subject so here goes..

To get (a good) deal on a piece of retail jewellry, you HAVE to be willing to haggle! You must know that large chain jewellers and mass marketers cannot and will not haggle. Little mom and pop jewellers buy ALL their stuff on credit, (for about .12c on the $1.00) and if they don't sell it rather quickly the interest adds up even more quickly.

For my wife (22 years ago) I bought a ring that appraised at $600.00 for $149.00 after two hours of haggle, the asking price was an even $1,000.00, I doubt that they (the jeweller) paid more than $100.00.

I've seen Novell 3.12 go 9 years with no sign of failure, and various flavors of Unix show no signs of decay (ever). It's beginning to look like FreeBSD and Linux will shape up the same.
