As much of a non-apple-fanboi as I am, I'm actually starting to like the AppleTV approach. Apps for CBS, NBC, HBO, Showtime, etc... and browse for the shows you want to watch. Sure, the navigation can get pretty cumbersome... but if the content distributors are okay with Apple's take, why wouldn't they be okay with another third party doing something similar?

Sure, it's not that $50/mo glorified Roku sitting under the screen... But I'd think it could work similarly. An ESPN 'app' that lists assorted channels (ESPN 8, The Ocho!), various Disney cartoon channels, CBS and whatever. With the extent of PPV offerings today, I'm sure Comcast would be more than willing to bill the viewers for wandering into paid TV territory.

I'd say in this case it only adds to a discussion of the upbringing of the 5 year old that no one is talking about. It mentions she was home and talking to her kid when all this was happening. This kid just saw his mom get killed by cops, and at their age the parents are idolized. He is just forming the notion of right from wrong and what authority means in society. Something his mom certainly didn't help out with. Not only did he just lose one of the most important people in his life, but now I'm sure there's going to be some distaste for the boys in blue. Who knows how this will manifest itself 10 or 20 years from now.

This is another data point in the ongoing discussion of cops killing black people. In this case the use of deadly force was warranted, in almost all other current events it was not. The stereotype had to have started somehow, and this "F the police" mindset the kids mom had is an example of just that.

We don't even have local competition within a municipality, often it's the choice between cable and DSL... Two technologies that, while similar, are not real competition with one another. If anything, DSL's slower overall speed is incentive for cable to slow the F down and match price.
Over the past 15 years that I recall, speeds have gone from 50Mbps to 100 Mbps, for roughly three or four times the price.

The only reasoning I've found for this is because in the U.S. we are "familiar with" swipe and sign, and removing that signature would be weird and foreign. Yet, most people I know have a checking account and debit card, which is swipe and pin (usually). No, Valve IS stupid. Gaben used to go on and on about how open source was the future, but kept his focus on Windows...

How exactly is his direction to port the source engine and most of their games (including ALL their popular ones) to Linux, not to mention encouraging other software developers to release linux versions, focusing on Windows?

I'd argue without Gaben's push, we wouldn't see Witcher, Borderlands and many other titles released in Linux. Yes, there's still some publishers that focus on the larger Windows market share, but that's not Gaben's fault.

... when another company was ALREADY using open source with their gaming hardware.

MacOS is based on BSD. He could have pursued Apple too.

That company was Sony. If Gabe Newell dislikes MIcrosoft so much, why didn't he form a joint venture with Sony, which has been using open source software longer than Valve has!

Steam Machines are a console take on PC gaming, that would put Steam in direct competition with the Playstation store. Sony already has hundreds, if not thousands, of games in their back library... many of which have PC versions as well. They get their monthly money from their subscribers to play online. Why would Sony kill that cash cow?

He could have also teamed up with Apple, who has been using BSD for over a decade now with their OS. That may have made an Apple/Steam console actually worth a crap... though I doubt Valve would be okay with Apple taking a 30% (or whatever) cut to each sale.

Essentially, the PS3/PS4 OS's are what SteamOS wants to be.

The reason is that while Gabe rants against walled gardens, the truth is he just wants gamers to use his OWN walled garden.

The truth is he wanted to Console-ize the PC gaming environment, to make it more of a one-size-fits-most for games. That's why Steam has Big Picture Mode, why steam machines exist, and why Steam Link was created. Yes the start wasn't as awesome as it could have been, but they are certainly making strides in the home theater gaming pc market. The Steam controller already makes life easier for many keyboard + mouse games.
