  3. Re:Such systems have been proposed before on The Zuckerberg Tax · · Score: 1

I think you are missing the point. A wealth tax is the ONLY way you can stem the ever rising gap between rich and poor. Income tax alone will only do so much.

When we talk about a wealth tax, we're not talking about the guy who has saved $20000 or even the guy who has saved $200000, we're talking about the person who has $20 Million and more. Purely because its recent and everyone is aware of it, I'm going to use Mitt Romney as an example.

Mitt Romney has paid an effective tax rate of 13.9% on his income, as shown by his now publicised tax returns. The US national average tax rate is somewhere around 30%. Now even if you ignore the fact that $18 million is still an extremely large amount to be taking home in one year and focus solely on the percentage of income. That is not a fair deal. Someone earning higher amounts should be on larger tax rates than people earning less. By earning more, you can afford to pay more tax, you might not be able to get 10 yachts this year, but you can still afford your house (if you didn't already buy it outright) food, heat, entertainment and STILL have a very very comfortable life. Not everyone who is paying lower percentage of tax can say the same.

The point from the above story is that income tax alone will not help to close the gap between rich and poor, this is the entire point of taxes and central government. The moral of the story is people who have excess amounts of wealth don't spend excess amounts of wealth, they usually sit on it and allow their considerable worth accumulate and then use that wealth for influence (if you don't think they do, you're crazy). Taxing wealth is not new, it isn't an agregeous act which should be shunned by society and it isn't going to end the rich being better off in society, it will simply mean that they will not have as much money.

Ahem, don't know how to burst your buble, but RSA Tokens do not "encrypt" your traffic, it is a form of Two Factor Authentication(2FA). There is a big difference between the two.

Also if you are using the tokens properly, you will not just be using what is on display on the token, but also PIN number that is combined with whats on display.

As for why they kept the seeds, I don't know, but if you have your network properly secure, the compromise of the seeds does not instantly make your 2FA redundant. Yes you are instantly more vunerable to social engineering attacks. So even if "terrorists" put a gun to the CEO's head (which is such a typical cop out to any situation) they could only get the seed which unlocks only one part of the token passcode.

In relation to your point about postal votes, they don't exist for the general public here in Ireland. If you're not in your voting district on the day, you don't get to vote. The only postal votes that occur are for people who are deployed overseas by the government, namely Irish military on peacekeeping, Garda members who are deployed as advisors and protection of state officials who may be abroad on the day or diplomatic staff (e.g. embassy staff).

However its not that difficult to commit voting fraud in Ireland. I'm registered in one district here (Dublin South East) but I've just moved apartment. The registration process for the electroral register here has a form for transfering your vote to a new district. But its awkward because you have to go to a Garda (police) station and have a Garda sign it verifying you are who you say you are, but to register as a new voter before an election (as part of a registration drive the government has before an election) you only have to fill out the form and send it in the post, no need for garda verification. Personally I can't wait for my vote to be transferred over so I get my RFA2 form ASAP to transfer it from on district to the next, but a regular citizen will probably wait for the next registration drive. Then on the day of the election, they could go from one constituency to the next and vote without being challenged as long as they provide ID.

But being honest, our governments have been a joke with regards electronic systems, between the E-Voting system and the Payroll system for our Health Sector electronic payroll system our politicians are going to fear bringing any electronic system for anything leaving us in the dark ages...

Your argument seems to be based on the fact that the government is a static thing, its not, its a representative of the people elected by the people. Corporations are not representatives of the people and do not have the interests of the people in their interests. It doesn't often times conflict with their modus operandi to conflict with the people but their interests lie with their stock holders and we have seen time and time again that they will do very bad things in the name of making profit. The idea that "the market" will decide to buy their products or not is also a fallacy, with the size of corporations and the power they hold they often times leave consumers no choice.

In the United States especially, corporations are seen more and more as an individual and that is a very scary prospect. Private organisations should NEVER hold more power than the representatives of the people and anyone who thinks the other way around hasn't fully thought through what they are proposing
