My other major gripe about mozilla mail is the lack of an option to send just plain old plain text messages again. I don't want the headers of replies and forwards being turned into little graphics. I don't want symbols like;) being turned into little smiley faces. I want to type in courier just like I can in Pine, or netscape messenger.
Er, have you tried setting composer to use text mail by default? Do Edit>Mail&NewsgroupAccountSettings, highlight top level node for your account and uncheck "Compose mail in HTML format". Or you can try it out on a per-message basis by shift-clicking the compose button.
'Spirited Away/Sen to Chihiro' is a true work of art. Disney knows it. Miyazaki knows it. The people who've seen it know it.
I've seen it, and I didn't think it was very good. For me it did not produce the "oh wow" moment that, say, Mononoke or the Matrix or even Kiki did. They should re-channel their resources into the movies that actually resonate with americans, not with a trippy wizard-of-oz remake.
A minor correction on OpenGL: though the API is written primarily in C, it is written in a very very basic C subset that is trivial to wrap in other languages. For that reason OpenGL seems to me to be the most wrapped API of all time.
I used OpenGL from Common Lisp for years. In all that time I only had one major bugaboo with the language translation - my Lisp implentation was incorrectly handling C functions that returned single bytes, so OpenGL would say "-1" and I'd get "-254" or something like that. That's not much of a cost considering how long I worked with it, and the cross platformism definately saved our bacon several times.
Even if 70% of developers suddenly switched to Linux, MS windows would still have the most developers working on any single desktop. Why? Because Linux doesn't even have a standardized GUI toolkit. Of the 70%, 20% would go off and do KDE, 20% would do gnome, 15% would use one of the three competing Java toolkits, 15% would use Mozilla's XUL, 10% would use motiff/lesstif, and 10% would just write their own from scratch. Thus the single biggest hunk of GUI developers (30%) would still be coding for WinAPI!
Is it just me or does the new "mail notification sound" not work under linux? (Well the system beep works but not the play-wav-file). Should I be running artsd or esd or something?
Please explain what their yearly subscription gets you? I don't understand what they're providing. Security updates? Doesn't that already happen in RH for free?
I can certainly understand paying them for tech support. We've all been there.:)
It seems whenever anyone finds a reasonably large crater, they declare "this is it, this is the one that killed the dinos". It grabs headlines. I'd hate to be a dinosaur, because it seems like I'd've been extinctified about 12 times over by genocidal asteroid de jour.
I have a headlamp that runs on 3 rechargable AAA batteries. I've been finding it so useful that I carry it around in my pocket all the time. (Note that even pocket-knives don't make this grade for me, YMMV).
Also, I bought a bike about five years ago. Its been so succesful at filling my transporation needs I got rid of my car. A bike that's good for me might not be the right one for you, but for what its worth its a black trek 730 hybrid.
Game theorists should get to work on why we're wasting precious fossil fuels and emitting nasty gasses on this "sport" that could be just as well done on a computer. Yeah mark me "Troll" or whatever, I just flinch every time I see press lip service to this destructive "sport".
Moderators: Please mod the parent of this post up up up till it sticks at 5 forever. I don't hold out much hope that the makers of the current crop of themeable crud will undo the fucktardedness they've wrought, but when they get replaced by next generation programs, maybe its developers will read the above post and not make the same mistake again.
Dear Jim, Alot of what your product does really reminds me of Lisp. In most LISPs, you can run your code either interpreted or compiled. Furthermore you can vary the compilation flags to individual functions on a case by case basis by editing the lisp source.
Often when I got a lisp equivalent of a seg fault (signal eleven at so-and-so location on the stack), I'd just recompile (with the compiler safties on) the topmost function on the stack and restart it. Usually that'd find the problem immediately.
What has gnome done this year that's worth paying for? It seems like I only ever hear about how they're eagerly embracing "Microsoft.THIS and.THAT". I haven't noticed any gnome improvement for quite some time.
Well if Abiword finally supported tables, that would be something. However I know how to support Abiword more directly than giving to these guys. =)
(I see you marking this as a troll, but really, I AM interested to know if they've done anything that I care about.)
Serious cyclists know that the worst place you can add weight to your bike is in the pedals or wheels. That's because when you accelerate forwards, you have to pay energy twice to get spinny things going: once for linear kinetic energy, and once for angular energy.
Hokeyspokes reccomends 9 AA batteries per wheel, on the wheel. By conventional wisdom that's like carrying a bowling ball in your backpack. I'll wait for version 2.0 of this technology, thank you very much.
The good reason is that, if I recall correctly (and I'm not positive I do), the three major battles in the Lord of the Rings are different: the Battle of Helm's Deep is about holding on with no reinforcements coming, the battle at Minas Tirith is heavy on Nazgul and is about holding out til reinforcements come, and the final battle is about dying valiantly in an effort to delay Sauron until Frodo can destroy the ring. So they do have different feels.
Helm's Deep is about holding out until the Ents come. Minas Tirith is about holding out till Rohan comes, then holding out some more till Aragorn comes with the reserves of Gondor. The final battle is about holding out till the Eagles come, and holding out some more till Frodo sneaks up under sauron and bites off his 'nads. Eeew.
But you're right in the larger sense that they do have different feels.
one of the most anticipated scenes in recent movie history: the great Battle of Helm's Deep.
Uh, what kind of monkey anticipates this battle? It's hardly ranks among the many battles in Return of the King. And at the end of the day there's plenty of similar stuff out there: braveheart, Ben Hur, yadda yadda yadda. Please spin down the hype reflex.
If they're worried about performance to the point where gcc ISN'T good enough on the various machines, then they're not going to goof around with interpreted languages, they'll be waaaaay too slow.
Lay off half your programmers, then invest the money you save in contracting for GCC optimizations on your oddball platforms.
MacOS is essentially an MS operating system with different branding. Similar revenue models. MS got control over what apps to ship (Internet Exploiter) in exchange for paying $ to Apple. So while it may not be 100% owned by MS, Apple is at least heavily influnced by Redmond.

The arrival of windows pushed the last boom. No questions about that.
Yeah, that's why the stock everyone was talking about in 1995 was netscape communications corp. The WEB was the last boom. No questions about that.
Hm, good point.

(Oops I forgot Tcl...and probably more)
moderate parent +1 funny :)

When using "find as you type", what do you do to get it to find the NEXT occurrence of the word?
my big beef I guess is the End Of Life being so short. What if I want to keep running RH7.3 for a while?
;)
cough *Debian* cough
Thanks.
Uh, can you explain to a dumb debianer how to get these free updates? Like the name of the program? email me.

Mod this guy's parent up please.

How about a few cool bikes? Infinate miles per gallon! Non polluting! Reliable! Its so small you can put it in a closet!

1) Apple ports to BSD
2) BSD is dying
therefore
3) Apple is dying
