  1. Not much - windows which, rather than teeny-weeny are very small, plus a pressure in the cabin slightly higher and more humid than before. That's it. The rest of the experience is the same miserable one that it has been for 15 years, with less and less legroom, the same plasticky food, the same you-pay-for-everything-and-then-some, take-it-or-leave attitude from the airlines, and, most importantly, it still takes the same amount of time to cover the classical London - New York route as it over 50 years ago. Dreamliner? Not for passengers.

  2. I will forever remember where I was and what I was doing when I learned about such momentous news, bound to change the nature of our existence in ways that we can hardly even imagine. Once again, consider yourself middle-fingered, Microsoft.

  3. The only thing consistent about the Linux desktop is that it will remain a roundoff error for the foreseeable future, thanks to those who insist in pushing Gnome. Not such a bad thing though - people will remain on Windows, and crooks will carry on attacking Windows mostly. In the meantime, my Linux desktop (sans Gnome) does all that I need and want. So, thank you very much, Canonical, Red Hat and others. Keep up you good work to make sure that Linux on the desktop will never take off.

  7. Entering aircraft industry regime on Why Intel Insists Rumors Of The Demise Of Moore's Law Are Greatly Exaggerated (fastcompany.com) · · Score: 1

I wonder if PC making is entering the same regime as the aircraft industry has been in for quite some time? Fifty years ago, one could do London to New York as fast as it can be done today - faster, for Concorde was debuting. Today, we have the so-called Dreamliner, an airplane that is said to be revolutionary. What do we, travelers, get to see? Well, its windows are very small, rather than teeny-weeny; the air pressure in the cabin is slightly higher than before, but still not quite sea level; and the humidity is higher than before, but still very dry. That's it. That's the revolutionary Dreamliner. Oh, and tickets are not any cheaper than they were 15 or 20 years ago.

  8. However, what matters to me is that a 10-year-old desktop computer is not very far behind, performance-wise, a 2017 desktop computer.

... different people have different preferences. One person may love to see Nolan's "Dunkirk" on a huge cinema screen, where the experience is probably quite overpowering.

I don't think that the experience is that overpowering, relatively speaking. The power of the big screen made sense decades ago, when at home you had a 23' screen with a modest resolution. These days, Saving Private Ryan is overpowering at the theater, and also at home, on a 60' screen. You can get an experience at home almost as overpowering as that at the theater. A huge screen and a very loud sound are not worth the price of admission any more.

  16. The theatrical experience is no longer so much better than that you can get at home. With big TV screens and sound systems available at prices that the vast majority of the population can afford, the theatrical experience is not that compelling any more. Sure, the sound is louder, but that is it. Theaters should start providing something else that you cannot easily get at home - and I say "else" because couples have been using the advantages of the theaters for generations. When it comes to just watching movies, the theater is not that compelling any longer.

Underwhelming, for two reasons. First, the supersonic flight technology has been well understood for over 50 years - building a supersonic airplane is just a matter of will to do so, and sufficient funds. Second, related to the first, this is an easy undertaking, if operating it profitably requires charging $10K and up per passenger for the London - New York trip. Do it so that the price does not go beyond $1,000 per passenger for that route, and we will be impressed. Otherwise, stop wasting the public's time.
