I have been using OpenSuse since around v10, mostly with KDE but I have gnome installed as well. I find Yast (essentially a nicer Linux version of Microsoft's control panel) easy to use, so adding printers, scanners etc. is easy to do. GUI or text versions are very similar.
It would be good if you could do a follow up post of how you get on with whatever distro you choose.
I can recommend Rocks as well, although you WILL need the slave nodes to have disks in them (you could scrounge some ancient 40Gb drives from somewhere...) you seem to want hardware information so...
First point is to have all the fans pointing the same way. Large HPC's arrange cabinets back-to-back, so you have a 'hot' corridor and a 'cold' corridor, which enables you to access both sides of the cabinet and saves some money on cooling. My old workplace had two clusters and various servers in an air conditioned room, with all the nodes pointing the back wall. probably similar to what you have. Don't know anything about the UPS, but I would assume having it on the floor would be OK.
Good luck with your project. Write a post in the future telling us how it goes.
Prenda have much bigger things to worry about than the EFF. They have really annoyed a federal judge, and may be guilty of perjury, contempt of court, fraud on the court and identity theft. Probably a couple of other offences as well.
Prenda isn't finished yet, but given the recent hearing they probably won't be around much longer
The original wii filled the casual gamers market with a simple remote that even my 84 year old grandfather could use (this is the guy who's mobile phone went off so he put it under the tap to get it to shut up). Nintendo came up with simple, fun games and few additional accessories to go with it.
For this market, graphics/HD are not really needed and are not especially important. Why bother to upgrade? "Hard Core" gamers would go and buy the Xbox720/PS4 when they come out as graphics/gameplay/improved physics are important. Not so much for more casual gamers.
I have a Wii, and have no intention of buying the WiiU.
They are aiming the GTX Titan at the GPU scientific computing market- by fitting up to three of the things in a smaller form factor and running on a (relatively) small power footprint of 250W, these can be useful for CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) calculations, quantum chemistry calculations, protein folding, bitcoin mining (as mentioned by msauve) the list goes on.
... waste!!! Manufacturers just want you to buy another to replace yours which is designed to break soon. Manufacturers win with more diversion of economy (e.g. repeat sales). World loses.
I'm not as pessimistic. I don't think that many people are going to buy one- so not much wasted. Problem solved
Actually it is worse than that (for John Steel and Brett Gibbs). Reading the court order, they are guilty (at least accused) of 1) failing to comply with a court order and 2) fraud on the court (and therefore perjury). If they fail to show up to the March 11th hearing then you can add contempt of court to that list.
Damn, now it makes perfect sense...Noah was only ~250 years old when he died. Makes the whole bible seem more legit.
The whole point of the Bible is to state God existence, and the nature of that God. So, if we assume an omnipotent God exists and wanted somebody to live for ~900 years, He has the strength and ability to be able to do so.
I have not used github, but I assume that there is version information and a date and time attached to different versions of the code. It should therefore be easy to prove the the open source/permissive license code existed first.
I've done research in Chemistry, and have heavily used open source quantum chemistry codes (mainly NWChem and Quantum Espresso. I am grateful to these guys for releasing these codes.
MY code on the other hand is not available. most of it is a bundle of scripts designed for one process that would make all the programmers on/. cry. the rest is in Fortran, which compiles using one compiler on one machine, and seg faults everywhere else. It's not open source because no one in their right mind would want it.
That said, if you want the raw data, all anyone needs to do is ask.
Over here across the Atlantic, most of the big stores don't charge for using credit cards anyway. Smaller shops and pub normally have a minimum amount before paying by card, and only a few places charge a credit card fee.
I am normally OK with this. The exception being when the credit card fee is expensive, and this is only the case for budget airlines in my experience.
Americans aren't willing to go back to 19th century factory life, which is essentially what they have in China now. It's not enough to raise the pay a little, the working conditions will have to be improved if they want a workforce that isn't completely desperate to take those jobs.
In addition, why work for 12 hours a day in a factory sweat shop, with no chance of advancement to a better position? It would be better to take a pay cut initially taking the office job, then work your way up the ladder.
Operating the Microsoft software (not including licensing fees) would cost [EUR]17 million, while the alternative will amount to almost [EUR]61 million
(emphasis mine)
Of course if you exclude the cost of buying (sorry- licensing) the software it is cheaper!
I have had Horse Steak while in Switzerland. It was very tasty and tasted of, well, horse, and unlike any other meat I've had. That said, BEEFburgers should contain beef. If I wanted a horse burger I would buy one.
2. The PC gaming experience for games like Skyrim, Fallout 3 and Dragon Age is better, so we kind of play and make decisions together. I'm more of an explorer and she's more of an action junkie, but in practice this means that if one of us can't do something with our normal approach, it's time for the other to take a crack at it.
Me and my girlfriend made a character in skyrim, looking a bit like her (she picked the hairstyle). Then I let her take the decisions, how to reply to people, what quests to do and who to follow. We've discussed what I would do differently. It seems to have gone well thus far. I would also recommend talking about what you've been doing in whatever games you play. As for Co-op for a non gamer GF, we've played Super Mario Galaxy and Little Big Planet. Unfortunately the latter was on a friends PS3, which suffered the yellow light of death, and I am not buying a console to play one game.
It's hard to believe that many current iOS or Android users are leaping toward Blackberry, though. If you're in one of those camps, is that so crazy?
I was a leader at a youth camp last year, and we had a phone charging service. For the kids there, I would estimate 40% iphone, 40% blackberry and 20% android. granted the very small sample size etc. normal caveats on relying on random slashdot comments, but some do buy blackberry.
Although I can't talk- I am the one person on the planet with a Palm Pixi
I reckon it will take some bright spark 6 months to figure out a way round this. It will probably involve taking the thing apart, but someone, sooner or later, will figure it out. If you try to lock down a device, some people will just see that as a challenge.
After all, the ipad/ iphone, PS3, Xbox and the wii have all been hacked. it was just a matter of time.
The 'author' should have been Lisa Simpson
I suppose filling in a loan application form in red crayon is a bad idea? that might explain why I had so many problems...
What do I think? Lots of luck!
I agree. I think your project is doomed without a lot of luck or divine intervention.
I feel I can speak on behalf of the slashdot community that our thoughts are with you at this difficult time

Pick any monitor you wish, then put it on a pile of books. you can get it as high as you wish

Or how about an autotargeting kilowatt laser?

I don't think this is quite what your after, and it is expensive as hell, but have you tried Matlab?

It will be interesting to see how this ends.

Now all they need is to collect all the sawdust, add some resin and make an additive 3D printer!
