    It sounds like this will be best viewed at night, and if people are going to be bringing lots of laptops out to play, I think the theifs might be out as well...

    On the other hand, will we see spikes in the images when a device is forcibly removed from its owner?

    If you set it up so that you can take it down then it comes under the non-permanent structure legislation (like scaffolding and basic garden sheds). By doing this, you can have it in place for as long as you want unless someone makes a direct complaint, and by that point you should be able to have planning permission for a permanent one ready...

    I don't see how this is an issue. I tend to only listen to music away from my machine when I have to wait around for something, so I throw 6-8 albums of music on my shuffle, with a few random songs at the bottom of the list. That way I don't have much to remember and I can navigate through it with minimal effort...

    How about the 1GB nano if you need tose playlists and screen?

    You know, I was trying to copy a 10k file from one tape to another on my ZX spectrum 16k and it took like half an hour...

    Now, a little more seriously, my main machine was a Powerbook 2400 for a few years and copying a few hundred MB of a CD image never seemed to take more than a couple of minutes...

    I'm wondering what else you're running to cause this slowdown (603e with 80MB on a Powerbook 2400).

    Which apps are causing you problems? (Which versions are you running)?

    In this case, they'll hopefully be careful about what they install it on if they don't want to be supporting the friend as unless the friend is a bit of a *($&£** they won't be calling Apple for support...

    It'll only be a low maintenance OS as long as the hardware is good...

    I don't see a technical (legal/moral maybe) reason why this won't work, but the problems will stem from the "power user" pseudo geeks who think that they know enough to make it work, but don't know enough to ensure that their system is compatible with existing drivers. These will also be the people who are up themseleves enough to think that it couldn't be their fault that it isn't working, so the OS must be crap.

    When they start spouting crap to non-technical users, that is where the problems/brand-poisoning will start.

    The strangest feeling keyboard I have ever used, but still a cool machine. Even looked good - nice sleek lines (until I got a 32K RAM pack that sort of spoiled the effect).

    The power adaptor is still in use, powering an alarm system on our garage although the machine is living in the attic.

    I'll never forget the day that I got a kempston interface so that I could actually use a !!joystick!! with my speccy...

    Getting games for 2.99 from the corner store was also pretty cool (although the waiting for the tape to load wasn't as much fun - nice scrolly lines though).

    I would think that a good number of people from small villages in Africa would tell you that drunk people on a Friday night is obvious.

    From personal experience (Madagascar not mainland Africa), I can say that without a doubt, most of the people 'downtown' in the village I lived in for a year would be drunk on Friday night. Especially if they were fishermen.

    But it is a universal binary in the link from the OP - this was a comparision beween a G5 running the PPC version and an Intel iMac running Blizzard's intel build.

    It's not out yet, but it is running as a universal.

    God created the universe however many billion years ago. He let it run through until somewhere past 4000 years ago.

    Each few million years he made a backup copy in case something went wrong.

    That finally happened some time after 4000 years ago (maybe something that man did???) and so he restored from his backup copy and removed additional humans from ouside of "Eden" thinking that maybe that would fix the problem that happened later.

    Because of this, the entire fossil record is intact and everything can be worked backwords to the beginning. However, this version of the world was only 'created' just over 4000 years ago.

    How does that sound???

    On a Toshiba Satellite PII 233. This was my main machine during 2003-2004. I found it in a skip outside a design firm, and after a little bit of playing around (including adding a 20GB HDD from a dell laptop in the same skip) I had site set up in a way that made it perfectly useable for everyday tasks such as email, web, and office stuff... I beat the crap out of it and it just kept running. I finally passed it on to a friend who is (as far as I know) still using it today.

    I really don't want a fuel cell in my camera or laptop or portable consumer electronics product. While they may be better than regular batteries in the output and recharge speed categories, what will happen when I want to take my nice fuel cell powered laptop onto a plane?

    Any type of compressed gas is already forbidden in cabins - especially nice flammable ones. The airlines and aviation authorities will probably try to completely ban any fuel cell based battery in a cabin space. This would either lead to a market in short duration regualar rechargables for flights, and/or the installation of power points in all areas of aircraft, although this would then mean that everyone would have to buy adaptors and also I don't want to have to be tripping over power cables every time I get up to go to the toilet;->

    I say consumer electronics as my heavy duty professional stuff will be travelling in the hold in a nice pelican case anyway...

    I remembered about this because of OS/9 trying to sue Apple over the use of OS9 in Mac OS9 - claiming that they were trying to trade on an established mark...

    I seem to remember that it was thrown out because of the obvious (to anyone not trying to sue for money) progression from Mac OS 6 to 7 to 8 to etc...

  23. Calibration of Speed Traps on Florida DUI Law and Open Source · · Score: 5, Informative

    One of the easiest ways to get a speeding ticket overturned/dropped (at least in the UK) is to request all of the calibration reports for the particular camera/radar gun used to take your speed.

    If the reports cannot be produced or are older/outside the statutory testing period, then the data produced by the machine will not hold up in court, and so the case will be dropped.

    In some cases, the police simply cannot be bothered/do not have the time to do all of the necessary paperwork, and so the case may just be forgotten/ignored.

    I don't know if this could be applied to a breathalyser, but it would be an interesting to see what would happen...

    From the Mozilla corp site:

    "On August 3rd, 2005, the Mozilla Foundation, a non-profit public benefit software development organization, launched a wholly owned subsidiary, the Mozilla Corporation. The Mozilla Corporation is a taxable subsidiary that serves the non-profit, public benefit goals of its parent, the Mozilla Foundation, and will be responsible for product development, marketing and distribution of Mozilla products."

    Seems to indicate that it's just a way of raising funds for the non-profit foundation. While it might be "for-profit", the only place those profits are going is into the non-profit foundation. This seems pretty acceptable to me...
